GABEROCKKA GOES ALL IN… DAVE’s QUALITY MEAT

DQM

My first experience at Daves Quality Meat, NYC…

I don’t want to make any powerful enemies in the NYC sneakerhead scene, so I’d like to preface this drop by saying that I realize and acknowledge that DQM is one of the most respected sneaker boutiques in New York City, and the U.S. My experience was just one experience, of one person, on one day, and is in no way meant to me a thorough review of the store. Dave’s Quality Meat is referred to in sneaker collecting circles as DQM and they came to prominence after a collaboration with Nike on a pair of Air Max 90’s. These joints are affectionately known as the DQM Bacons. A pair of these will run you several hundred bucks so don’t even think about it. When Nike debuted the ‘One Time Only’ package I copped the Air Max 95/360’s that matched the Bacon’s colorways.

DQM Bacons

Thursday is payday, and for a fiend like me, that means Thursday is copp some new gear day. I made a plan to meet up with Dallas after work so we could hit up DQM, as neither of us had ever been there. I wanted to go in the store with a purpose, so I checked their website to browse their stock and pick the kicks I was going to cop. I narrowed it down to two that were both marked as in stock on their site; the Air Max 90/360 hybrid in the Black Lava/Midnight Fog/Chlorine Blue colorway, and the new P-Rod/Free 5.0 hybrid being referred to as the ‘Free-Rod’.

Free Rod

Dallas was chilling at a free concert at City Hall Park so I got to the store before him and did my rounds. The first thing I noticed was that the Free-Rod was not up on the shelves, so I asked the guy behind the cash register if they had them. “We don’t have em” was his curt response. Now these shoes were added to their website two days ago, and if you go to their site, on the first page is a picture of these sneakers marked ‘Recently Added’, so I felt that it was a valid question for me to ask whether they had just not received their shipment yet, or if they were sold out. He looked at me like I had just asked him the stupidest question he had ever heard, and half mumbled “sold out”. Okay, so they didn’t have my first choice, but now let me look for the AM 90/360’s. These were also not on the shelves, so I went back to the cash register counter and I said, “there was also a pair of Air Max 90/360 Hybrids up on your site…” He rudely interrupted me, “Look, if it’s not on the shelves that means we don’t have it, okay?”

He was a dick, plain and simple. Reading about DQM in the past, one of the aspects of the store that their loyal supporters gushed about was how friendly the staff were, and how there was none of that elitist ‘we’re too cool to need your business’ attitude you experience at sneaker and streetwear boutiques, record shops, and other places where the staff act like they’re better than you because they earn minimum wage at a really “cool” store. I did not find this to be true at all. On the contrary, the guy that I dealt with there was acting like such a rude elitist prick, that it almost seemed like he was trying to scare away potential customers who were n00b-ish enough to dare to ask if they had something in stock.

What did they have in stock? Well they did NOT have the Free-Rod’s or AM 90/360’s their site claimed were in stock. They also did not have the AM 90 ‘Wheat Skulls’, AM 90 ‘Elmers Glue’, The ‘Nikebook’ dunk hi’s, or the ‘Navy/Neon/Silver’ AM 90’s – all of which are listed as in stock on their website. They had a shit load of Vans, a ton of Nike SB Blazers, some of the less appealing/less desirable colorways of dunk hi’s. As far as Air Max’s go, they had all of the recent crop of ugly colorway Air Max 1’s, the Major Taylor 90’s, and those busted white 90’s with the square polka dots. Not all that much else.

I left empty-handed, and feeling like unless they release another Tier 0 joint like the Bacon, I can’t imagine that I would have a reason to go there again. I guess it’s a good place to get Quickstrike Nike’s, but I would never go off information on their website again, and I hope that the staff is not usually as rude as the guy I encountered.

DQM Store Review
Pros(+): Quickstrike account with Nike, eclectic selection

Cons(-): Unreliable website info, rude staff, couldn’t find a single pair of kicks in the whole store that I would wear.

Cosign the staff at all them good hood boutiques (down here sneakervilla,mo gear, denim express, etc) all act like they shit don’t stink. Sneakervilla has this policy where if you’ve seen the shoe somewhere for a cheaper price, then they will give you their kicks for whatever price you seen em as. If that’s not some bullshit Idk what is. They overprice the shit out of there shoes. And they push them fake evisu jeans

^^ word to my mother I hardly frequent these type of spots in Diego cuz of this and when I do go I roll with the homie who is “in” with these type of dicks. True Story a dude tried to get slick with the talk with me and I told him I was going to fuck him up if he made one more smirk in my direction. Dude shut up quick fast and when I went later with my boy dude was all cordial and shit and all of a sudden he had some kicks in stock. Fuck that just buy your shit online if you can.

    that’s bad business

I do 80% of my shopping online, mostly because I can’t find a lot of the stuff I rock here in NYC (strange huh?)

I’m going through a phase where I’m really feeling some Japanese and UK brands like Swagger, Visvim, Maharishi, and Royalefam (Singapore) and that shit is near impossible to find in a store over here.

Sometimes it’s nice to be able to buy something and not wait 7-14 days to be able to rock it though, so I do have a few stores here in the city that carry some brands I like, and when I can I do the rounds at these stores. I’ll probably end up doing little drops on these stores in the future so I won’t go into too much detail, but if any New Yorkers are reading this, Boundless NY and Vinnie’s Styles in Brooklyn both carry dope brands, as well as The Reed Space in Manhattan. The people at these stores are real cool and down to earth too.

thats cuz DQM isnt a “sneakerhead” store…its a skateshop…same as Supreme. Their reliable clientèle are well…skaters. When it comes to things being in stock are not , the real connoisseurs kind ..well …”just know ” by looking at the shelves, and the shop keepers by the end of the day are probably sick and tired of people asking for the same ugly ass shoe, ( sorry but Free Rods indicate the apocalypse for the SB line). Obviously if a product isnt on the shelves they dont have them , no matter what the attitude of the clerk providing you with his services.

  8. nerditry says:

Ran into the same thing here in Orlando @ Culture Kings. Spot opened up a few months back without any real fanfare and decided to head on in. Now I won’t front on anyone getting a dose of their medicinal whenever they see fit, but if I have to get buzzed into a store with tints, things feel awkward immediately. The smell of presidential was evident and there were even a couple of youngins about that had to be kids of the staff.

Staff being a dude and a couple of his boys looking at me and my roommate like we stepped in looking for Payless.

Everything on the shelves looked to be almost all Dunks Hi and a few pairs here and there of Lows. Nothing special, just some mixed colorways and the occasional material variation, but maybe 20 pairs altogether. When I went to ask a question, I got a lot of static because he couldn’t tell me anything about ordering direct from Nike or having something customized. I figured out that these guys probably have no ties into Nike at all for ordering and everything there came from the overseas folks.

I was about to leave empty handed, but did end up getting a pair of Rebel8 socks with the switchblade and spades.

If you’re going for a real niche market, make sure that you treat the folks in that niche damn well because like it’s been said above, just as easy to get it online.

  9. ferrisave says:

Man I don’t know about Dave’s but them clowns over at FlightClubNY are straight up ASSHOLES. They don’t wanna buzz people in….they NEVER look you in the eye when you ask them something and if you don’t ask for something a couple of times they’ll just have you standing there looking stupid. And don’t even bother trying to actually call and get info. They act like picking up the phone is against the law. Their kick game is crazy, although waayyy overpriced, but they are fucking dicks.

At the end of the day…..you sell sneakers son. You ain’t no better than a kid working at footlocker. Matter of fact, they are mad old to be selling kicks. Can’t be making any real paper.

  10. ferrisave says:

    Gaberocka

Go to Vinnie Styles in Brooklyn. It’s on the corner of Flatbush and Pacific st. Not far from Atlantic Ave train station. If you are into the hard to find Japanese shit…your head is going to explode when you go there. Trust.

  11. omegaSB says:

Yea chris and them at FC are dicks …make sure you do your homework before you walk in….especially the past few weeks…..their inventory is almost full …mega hectic .

  12. omegaSB says:

oh yes they make a very large margin of money …cuz they own the store …

  13. gaberockka says:

Oh I know. As soon as I get my paper up I’m definitely heading over to Vinnie’s Styles…I have a long list of things to get (mostly online) before I can start going to actual stores though haha…

OmegaSB – I see your point entirely but at the same time, these dudes work at a sneaker store; if they’re getting so tired of answering ‘do you carry these sneakers’ questions, maybe they should go get a real job or something. I hate those places that have such a hardcore and well informed core following that they treat everyone else like shit. Aside from the obvious bad business implications, it’s bad life conduct in general. Whether you work at a sneaker store, a restaurant, a ride operator at Disney World, or you don’t work at all – it just comes down to how you treat people in general.

And I don’t see the relevance of your point about it being a skate shop. I don’t know enough about its history to dispute that it might have started out as a skate shop, but when I was there the walls were completely covered with sneakers (not even half of which were skateboarding kicks), there were no decks, and the only skate related shit they had at all was some trucks and wheels in a little display case by the cash register, so how is that really relevant at all? Not beefin, just curious.

  14. gaberockka says:

And yeah; co-sign about flight club. That place is probably the worst I’ve ever seen. You go in there just wanting to buy something from them, and they make you work mad hard to do it. Retarded. Also a place where if you go there uninformed they’ll treat you like shit.

And not every person working at DQM or FC at a given time is the owner or even a co-owner. I’m sure some of those dudes just work there.

  15. omegaSB says:

DQM makes their own deck on a bi monthly basis…i know that for a fact , i havent been there for a while but i certainly know there was a deck somewhere in that store. Its relevant because your much beloved “sneaker culture” ( circa 2001 and on ) manifest itself inside of skate shops . There where only a boutiques in its heyday and the majority of them were run and owned by skaters …even Stussy has a skate backround which was in major heat with both Supreme and Zoo York in the early to mid 90’s . These styles that you see today are just comodified skater steez. DQM is major name in the community because Dave was a good buddy with Harold Hunter who skated for Zoo York , Harold was always a big contributor to the skate community ( may he rest in peace) . My point is you get dirty looks because your a probably being looked at as another poser ( no offense im generalizing for my point ) , since this sub niche has acquired so a magnificent gravity in the past couple of years , these store owners and clerks get somewhat perturbed by customers drab talk over sneakers and such . These guys dont consider themselves retail , and most of the employees are skaters themselves , i don’t even think they use applications . They do this so they can make ends meet just like you do .

  16. omegaSB says:

And Chris owns FC…those guys he works with are mostly family ( besides the black dude in there and the asian guy …idk where they came from ) .

  17. Combat Jack says:

^ Vinnies is the shit, plus they’re mad cool dudes. Also run with them Brooklyn Circus cats as well. Reed space cats are mad down to earth. I used to think the cat that runs Premium Goods was a dick until he saw my stilo in action and in public, since then dude has been mad cool. He might still be a dick to others who he might perceive to be new jacks. The rest, eff ’em [||].

  18. gaberockka says:

I see your point Omega – you definitely have a good argument. I’m 28 and grew up in NYC; I was really into the skate scene back in the early 90’s; hell I have Fresh Jive and SSUR tee’s that date back 14 years, so I know that the ‘streetwear scene’ is just the bastard offspring of the skate scene.

But returning to my main points:

    1. there was really nothing all that hot in the store
    2. they were dicks and they didn’t know anything about me.

Would they have been nicer if they knew I was in the nyc skate scene all the way back in 94? Or that I was cool with HH back when I was in HS and we partied together mad of times?

It doesn’t really matter does it because they dismissed me as a poser sight unseen. I’m just sayin…doo doo selection + unwelcoming atmosphere = a place I’m not gonna be likely to give my biz to again, and when all is said and done, they are a business, they do want to make ends meet, so alienating potential future loyal custeez doesn’t seem like the right move, but what do I know, I’m just trying to hop on the bandwagon while there’s still room

  19. omegaSB says:

i totally feel you on that, why they are dicks? I have no idea …i had that problem when i first started skating and going to Supreme. I was my favorite store but i live Nj so along with the somewhat slow NJ transit ..to me getting there and them either not having anything …or them giving me a bullshit glance ..i knew i couldnt take offense because i was just starting out skating. However the term “loyal customer ” really comes into effect here , since these arent major department stores we are shopping at. Eventually at any store your face will get remembered …and some perks might with that , and obviously if the store doesnt have a fitting selection theres about 80 others in the city all with the same account plus some others u might have overlooked . Usually when i go into a shop iv’e never been into for the first time ( lets say Goliath or something ) … i don’t rush for a purchase..i kinda linger and set out some time to talk to a couple people in the shop and spark some conversation . It usually leads to a better experience on your next visit …whether it being them offering you a free shop shirt or some shit ( my first experience at Laced in Boston ..cool dudes ) or them putting up some of your handy work in the shop ( Bodega in Boston ) …..its all semantics once u get it in your head ..its only shoes and leather ..”.its about human connection !!!” ( mooj from 40 year old virgin )

  20. Dan Love says:

    Gaberokka,

There’s nothing worse than the ‘too cool for school’ attitude of staff in shops like these. On my recent trip to NYC I had bad experiences in Brooklyn Industries in Williamsburg and the Alife store in Soho. As you say, it may just be a case of an off day, but the staff in these stores couldn’t have given a shit that I was there to part with my hard-earned cash. What is that about? How do these stores actually remain in business? As a Brit we’re not exactly famed for our customer service, but in other more mainstream stores people were friendly, helpful and polite, often pointing me in the direction of competitors if they didn’t have what I wanted. Ultimately I ended up buying something in these stores: I walked out of Alife (which I think is ridiculously overpriced) and BI empty handed.

The bottom line is that it’s just poor business sense. If I was the owner of one of these outlets I wouldn’t stand for it, because the longevity of your business is at risk. With merchandise so easily available on the net, the very reason that you go in a store is because you want that satisfaction of face to face service, and if they can’t provide that then I don’t see how they can hope to exist in such a competitive market.

The real shame of it is that you walk out feeling enraged instead of with a skip in your step at the fresh new clothes/kicks you just picked up. No-one who is willing to part with $100+ on shoes or clothes should feel that way.

Take your business elsewhere: fuck ’em.

    Dan

^^^ Word! I think at times these stores really want to cater to the idea of exclusivity or rare as oppossed to making a customer feel welcomed. To each their own as far as business practice. But I have an uncle who owns a couple of restaurants and he always told me make the people feel comfortable and serve them good food{because just serving good food isnt enough(c)rare kicks} and they will always come back. Thats how I would build customer loyalty. I might add though after going back a few times these dudes usually change their Coifs and swag[||]. I am just saying its harder to be a dick[||] than being nice. Customer Service is just that Customer Service

I hear what everyone is saying. I hate the ‘too cool for school’ attitude as well. Especially being a female, they won’t even pay you any mind. First, they think you’re in there on some sneak shit, like you just want to ‘look around.’ I’ve been into sneakers for awhile but I couldn’t really get my hands on things until I got to college. But at the same time, I know what I’m talking about when I go to these places. They try to play you, alot.

    Ok,

I dont understand the beef with FC..I know Chris can be a dick but who really takes him seriously???
And that store is TINY..maybe thats why they dont always buzz people right in? It is also a SUPER hectic spot…I’ve actually never bought anything there but I’ve sold a TON of shit in the store and NEVER had a problem with them. Like I said, Chris can be a dick, and Rome can too but why take them seriously?? Maybe I’d feel different if I was actually spending money in there. But from the staffs point of view I really dont think they have the time to address every customer with a “May I Help You?” etc…just tell em what you want…dont try to “bro down” with everyone that works in the store..
Carlos at FC is cool people…Tam and everyone else too pretty much…but wait soon the problems FC has with cramping and small spaces will be over and I’m sure the staff will be chiller..but be prepared to travel outside of the comfort zone of the Village/LES to do your shopping.

Clientele is the prob the worst sneaker store (or “boutique”) in the city if you ask me..next to DQM…I really dont know why people go to either one of these spots..they never really get that much good shit and the people that work there are clowns and cornballs..including dave himself..and dont get me started on premium goods in BK..is it even still there?? Does Ian Reid still have anything to do with them? If he does it’s the only thing keepin them afloat because that spot is TRASH.

And the Nike Sb line has been garbage for a MINUTE with the exception of a few blazers and classic sbs. You guys still wearing dunks??? DAMN

And gaberocka what the fuck were you thinking looking for those Free-Rods in the first place?? Getting ready for next years pride parade?? Jesus.

And even I know that the Free-Rods (even the name sounds ghey) were Suuuper limited and that these stores RARELY update their websites. And you’re saying you’ve been into this “scene” since the 90’s…hmmmmmmm

I DON’T CARE IF YOU THINK WE SUCK OR WHAT EVER YOU WANT TO THINK AT THE END OF THE DAY IT’S JUST SNEAKERS AND MOST OF THE PEOPLE WHO BUY THESE SKATE SNEAKERS DON’T SKATE ALL THEY CARE ABOUT IS MATCHING A PAIR OF SNEAKERS WITH A FUCKING NEW ERA HAT.

  33. gaberockka says:

I was handling this with kid gloves out of respect, but now I don’t really feel the need to anymore. Dave, your points:

    1. I never got mad at you. I said what was on your site was not an accurate representation of what you have in store, so potential customers should not go off the info on your site. What you said confirmed that.

    2. I didn’t step over the line, I asked if a product was in stock. Did that deserve a snotty and rude response? Your staff should know better than to take out their frustration about all the people who DO step over the line, on the people who do NOT.

    3. The way you ended your post basically shows that you feel contempt for, and treat at least *some* of your customers with contempt. Who cares if they skate? They’re your CUSTOMERS, not your friends. I don’t skate, and I didn’t go in there for skate shoes. I like sneakers, and I went in there to buy a pair of sneakers. It sounds like the “MOST OF THE PEOPLE WHO BUY THESE SKATE SNEAKERS DON’T SKATE ALL THEY CARE ABOUT IS MATCHING A PAIR OF SNEAKERS WITH A FUCKING NEW ERA HAT” is an opinion shared by your whole staff, but honestly, you’re more of a sneaker store than a skate store – I don’t care how you started or what ideology was behind your store back in the day, but if 90% of your inventory is sneakers, you’re a sneaker store, so what right do you have to treat your non skater customers with contempt?

Honestly, I thought I just caught one of your employees on a bad day, and I said as much in my write-up, but after reading your post it seems like his attitude was pretty much an extension of your own.

Sorry, just how I interpret it.

  34. gaberockka says:

    Begs no friends –

I never said I’ve been into the sneaker scene since the 90’s. I was into the skate scene in High School. I only got into collecting sneakers in like 2003 and I’ll freely admit that. I never claimed to be the most old school cat in the scene. I was into a scene that eventually birthed the sneaker scene, but I’m still learning a lot about the sneaker scene as it exists now. I’m a humble newbie and I’m always respectfully open to the POV’s of those who came before me.

Yes, I know the Free-Rod’s are wack. True story is I just wanted to buy something that day and I liked the sillhouette of the Free-Rod; the colors I took issue with – ask Dallas, he can provide you with email proof from that day we were supposed to go to DQM that I was like I dunno about those but I’ll def cop the 90/360’s.

I went to DQM the day after they posted the Free-Rod’s to their site. I didn’t realize it was such a moronic assumption that they might actually have them in stock. Sheesh. I’m trying to put drops on here to connect with people and give people something to read and think about, cut me some slack.

  35. omegaSB says:

Ian Reid is with Irak now …he basically promotes them and Acapulco gold ….since the sale of his DVD he’s trying to get his skating steez back so he just goes to the BANKS everyday and makes fun of the BMX kids riding lol ….funny dude …doesnt skate too bad either .

Right now I’m just writing about clothing and kicks and shit. If Dallas wants to ‘retro’ some of my older stories maybe he’ll do that (did you catch them all?) and I’ll eventually write some new ones, and if they’re not here there will probably be a link to them on here.

I’m actually gonna do a drop about spots to copp, so sit tight on that.

^^^^^^ then why even bother saying ‘sold out’ or having a price (which connotes that it’s in stock, if it doesn’t say sold out) ??????

    common sense

  39. Begs No Friends says:

Gaberockka…all good, I support your post 100% just for exposing DQM as the trash it is…and I think Dave did a pretty good job with that in the above post….seriously, he just told you guys he doesnt give a fuck about gettin your money..unless your in with the “cool guys” that is…then its prob a diff story. How ghey is it that this dude is prob close to 40 years old with this kind of attitude??

Simply put If you shop at DQM your a sucka…don’t put dqm in the same category as Supreme or FC or even ARC. And Dallas you still get hyped on Dunks I dont know if you’re opinion counts.

And Ian doesnt “work for” Irak as much as he’s just cool people and promotes the gear. He’s not getting checks cut from them believe me.
Not that he needs it, from what I understand his vids have done well and he used to have the sneaker game on lock. Maybe Acapulco Gold pays him though…hope so.

  40. the_dallas says:

    ^ BNF,
I love my Dunks. NIKE retro’d them janks in the first place because of me. You and DQM are one in the same. You need to keep your ghey stiletto sneaker shit over there. I should smack you in the mouth for putting my nigga Sack Lo biz on the street like you know the nigga like that. Be easy homey when it’s all said and done this is a small city and unfamiliar niggers like you that thinks shit is sweet be the first to cop pleas.

    GABE,
Talk your shit mayne. Fuck these anonymous coward assholes. If you copped the Free Rods that’s what’s really good. For all the niggers on the internets that shits on my UNDFTD Dunks there are people on the streets that give me my props. Niggers on the internets feel bold, but when you see ’em on the streets they are fuckin’ mice. If a nigger don’t like my shoes he can go back to sucking off his mother.

I actually like your site though and dont take any of this shit seriously so its gravy. But I’m NOTHING like Dave c’mon now. Just because I “unfamiliar” to you doesnt mean that kids dont know me…How do you know that I dont work for/with Ian or Irak for that matter. You dont. So fall back and like Milk D said “GET OFF MY LOG”

and the Stussy Dunk shit over nothing ….they werent even tier 0 …if their getting sold at Karmaloop of all places …their pretty low in the caste system .

  48. gaberockka says:

Keep these comments coming…if this shit breaks 50 comments Dallas has to give me his vintage Nautica Competition 5-panel caps….in blue AND red…if it breaks 100 I get the white joint too…

Maybe I should start a flame war just to advance my cap game…he ohmegaSB: you stink!

^^ this is what I am talking about, who cares about the exclusivity. I am just about being fresh and Dunks in general look fresh with jeans so if I can get a nice colorway that I LIKE then I could give a shit if 50,000 skater posers also rock them. and let me queue the music for DP, No Dick Ride but it goes some thing like this boom godson across the belly prove…….. you know the drilly!

    nerditry,

Culture Kings does not have a Nike account and a good deal of thier Nike’s are bootlegs. True on them being bad at customer service, check out Beta (if you haven’t already) new store, just getting their game up, they’re next to Covert Skate shop on Bumby and Robinson, just south of Culture Kings. Also Galatic G has a Teir One account so they usually get some good Nike’s and they don’t jack thier prices up like some other spots in Orlando.

As for DQM, I was just recently there and I have to say that the customer serive was actually good, granted that Dave was in the shop but the Asian kid working was on it, didn’t come of like an elitest prick and actually let us know about another spot that had the shoes my friend was looking for. Alife on the other hand, not so good, kid working didn’t even act like we were there and lost out on some sales because of it. Same with Flight Club, even though they had some nice Dunks there, overpriced but nice.

  68. @Fux,

  85. gaberockka says:

    ohmegaSB –

I collect sneakers too. So does Dallas. No shame whatsoever regardless of what BNF says. It’s all about living your life in a way that you’re happy with, who cares what others think? My only gripe is that I work in an office environment so 5 out of 7 days of the week I can’t wear kicks, and I don’t even go out like go out go out every single weekend day, so I basically have more kicks then I can possibly wear. In fact, with my recent hermit-like stay home with my girl and smoke pot all the time habits, it would probably take me more than a year to wear every pair of kicks I have (in a going out setting of course)

  86. ^ don’t ask, wiki, Fux. I already put up the Fred wiki laink holmes

  91. @Fux,

yeah can you watch it online, at THIS PAGE. The game is analogy to epic ethering being leveled at BNF at these other sneaker elitists/metrosexuals.
