Criminal Stylists Unite!

steinbrenner

An article published in the NYTimes earlier this month says that criminals choose the Yankee cap over most sports related apparel because of the ‘Jay-Z effect’ and the cool factor he brings to the item. Ha! The Yankees ownership does more crime on the daily robbing the Bronx residents of their resources than Jay-Z has in his entire life.

But the article made me think outside of the box…

If I could just get a placement on a rapist doing a perp walk I might could move the rest of these joints.

    I’d love a SFU fitted (7 1/4) but…

If I had $$$ I’d pay ya’ll NOT to wear motherfucking Yankees anything, fuck dead George and insipid celebrity Shawn Carter, goddamn.

I fail to understand the appeal when there are so many alternatives, the Mets– as lesser of two evils for one, tho’ granted, their frequent lack of success is too ‘real’ for a culture that lies to itself about everything, especially ‘keeping it real’– or the BROOKLYN Dodgers…

Unless some folks are still bent that Jackie Robinson was in a spot where he took shots at Paul Robeson AND Martin Luther King, which again, might be too ‘real.’

Sidenote: 40 Diesel, if you see this, Paul and Jackie story is a crazy, I feel bad for both dudes; both men being used by outside forces to lacerate themselves.

My SFU is the only modern Yankee hat I own. Thanks DP and if you have another 8 I’d support the movement.

Willis – you traipsed along why I won’t wear a true Yankee hat. When I need a navy blue fitted I keep a fresh Detroit Tigers on deck for the D in my government name (or for Diesel LOL).

With that said I ready Jackie Rob’s “First Class Citizenship” which is a collection of J Rob’s letters to various people in the public. Jackie wasn’t popular with Adam Clayton Powell and Malcolm X either. Whats crazy is that it was a time of such great struggle that was further inhibited by the backbiting of our great leaders due to difference in strategy to achieve the same goal. In many ways Paul Robeson begat Jackie, who begat the Bill Russell’s, Jim Brown’s and Ali’s, who allowed for the success of the post racial Magic & Jordan, and the relatively colorless LeBron James.

I’d love to read more on that Paul & JRob. I’ll google the knowledge but if you have any links I’d appreciate it.

if you have a size 8 1/4 you don’t need, i know a person with a head full of hair that could use it.

@Willis – Wow. Been spending the last hour or so doing the knowledge on it. Thanks for that.

  5. 40– sorry for delay, I was out… The best summary of Jackie’s end is probably in “The Era: 1947-1957” by Roger Kahn. What’s harder to grasp because it’s outside baseball per se is the Red Scare stuff that led to Jackie being summoned…

In very brief, in 1948 through early ’49 you have three big American Communist scandals/trials and they’re all coming together in Spring/Summer of ’49. Jackie, meanwhile, is having an awesome season, and Paul Robeson– a great man but tricked by anger and flattery into not recognizing Russia was itself evil– makes statements to the effect that black would not or should not fight in the military when/if there’s war with Communists.

The House Un-American Activities Committee (run by Republicans), meanwhile are getting jealous of the attn the Dept of Justice is getting and decide to have summer hearings.

Jackie was the obvious choice– and remember, there are still only seven blacks on five teams then– to murk Robeson; he didn’t want to, exactly, but Branch Rickey was insistent and then he hooked up with dude from the Urban League (most conservative of black political organizations) to do that statement, which isn’t the worst thing in the world (gets some jabs in about Jim Crow) and gets a standing ovation but…

The damage was done– tho’ Robeson hurt himself too by not seeing through Stalin, alas. Harlem at this time had a Communist Party member of City Council, btw, Benjamin Davis, Georgia dude via Harvard Law School– and he’ll eventually go to jail for being a Communist tho’, again, it was a tragic mistake of Davis’– if he or Robeson really knew what was going on they’d have been appalled.

Here’s a fave Robeson song of mine, tho’ because it’s a show tune it goes all over the place, from funk to operatic–

    Go Yankees!

  7. P/S 1– after his testimony, Jackie flew back to the city for night game at Ebbets Field against the Cubs– which he kicked ass in (forget stats offhand).

P/2 2– In 1949, the Yankees had precisely no black players; the Dodgers three– Jackie, Don Newcombe, Roy Campanella.

A week before Jackie testified to HUAC, those three + Larry Doby of the Indians were the first black All-Stars, which game was held at… Ebbets Field.

  8. $yk says:

I will say this…if the Brooklyn Dodgers still existed, they would be just as successful as the Yanks…no shots @ the Metropolitans fans…

@Willis… Thanks for those gems. I’m gonna have to pick up that book.

One of the many reasons why I’m glad DP dot com is back. I’m gonna drop a little loot in the prAli box.
