The Dark Crystal: DP Dot Com House Couch Movie Nite

dark crystal

Let me tell you how I stay winning… My ladybug knows me, and loves me. Some of y’all might have a chick that loves you because she doesn’t know who you are yet, and some of y’all might have a chick that doesn’t love you because she knows who you are and she just stays with you out of convenience. It sucks to be y’all since my dame knows me and she loves me too. And she knows I love fried chicken from PathMark, and she knows I love quirky off beat shit.

So for our monthly house date she brought home the number one supermarket fried chicken and a video I haven’t seen in twenty five years. The Dark Crystal is a masterpiece of puppeteering by the greatest of all creators of that art. JIM HENSON of Sesame Street and Muppet Show fame, along with FRANK OZ create a world that is playful and visually stunning. What comes to mind is a Fraggle Rock type universe on another planet with even more danger and adventure. I can only imagine what kind of movie could be made today with all the advances in animatics and computer graphic imagery.

I’m not going to divulge this story since it pisses some of you readers off when I do that, but suffice to say it is a well-written tale about courage, sacrifice and heroism. It’s definitely something for the kids in the 6yrs old to 10yrs old range. Or for a kid that’s in his late thirties. There is some graphic imagery in the picture but I don’t imagine that any of you parents allow the television to be a surrogate and you will watch the movie along with your children. Whoever has a seed and hasn’t gotten shit from DP Dot Com needs to e-mail us a mailing address so I can ship you a copy of this DVD.

Has anyone seen the JIM HENSON pic called ‘Labyrinth’? I understand that is supposed to be the joint. Let me know what’s really good.

    First!

    Oh Hell yeah!!!

The Dark Crystal kicks ass not only because it’s a freaky ass movie that contains way too many references to death for little kids but also because Jim Henson totally put his career and his bankroll on the line to finance the thing and I’m not even sure it broke even.

Good stuff. If I had Netflix, it would be in my queue. I’m breaking out my old school VHS copy nonetheless.

Jim Henson gets all Tolkien. My wife loves the shit out of this movie.

Yeah, if you like this, you’d dig Labyrinth.

  3. FBombs says:

    Oh shit Labyrinth!

Jim Henson directing, George Lucas producing. I thought it was a classic when I saw it–though I doubt it’s for the super-young kids. Movies as imaginative as this one are a rare breed these days..i certainly recommend this one (it HAS been 20 years since I’ve seen it–but still I remember it vividly).

Now that you got my 80s movies brain working, does anyone remember ‘The Flight of the Navigator’?

  4. N.O.N. says:

Yeah, i got that chick–we watched DC about a month ago, it’s nuts. Those birds are so horrible, with the creaking voices all the time and the beak smacking. good choice.

^^Dallas this is a beautiful song Hip Hop at its finest, So I was watching Entourage on Sunday and in the scene where Turtle(ya New New is one lovely bird) hops into the lincoln and proceeds to get into an accident, this is the song he is jamming. I had to get on my grizzly to find out the artist since its like from ’94 and I was just a young 13-year old kid at the time but I remember this song being my jam for a hot minute.

As far as Labrynth(sp) their is a very good movie impeccably done by Guillermo Del Toro called “Pans Labrynth” its in spanish but that movie was the best movie I saw all of last year. Great Film and incredible Cinematogrophy, I have a link if you want to watch it online. Hit me on the Gmail. 1

  6. This is slightly off the genre, but I caught the last 15 minutes of the Karate Kid on teevee last night. Maybe it was my shitty day at work, but when Danny Laruso did the crane and knocked that conceited mean blond california boy on his ass, I teared up. Should be required viewing.

i love the dark crystal, but the skexies are some nasty mofos and a little too evil for my daughter to watch just yet (shes only two 1/2). for those of you into adultish puppet movies, check out “meet the feebles”, by peter jackson of lord of the rings fame. its super raunchy and totally hilarious. also, another movie that i used to watch all the time when i was a kid was called “wizards”, which was a ralph bakshi (i know you know, dallas) flick, who did the original LOTR trilogy as well as hobbit animation adaptations. very interesting stuff. time for some coffee….

  10. Amadeo says:

I own Dark Crystal and Labyrinth on DVD.

    ^^thoreauly77, Wizards is the joint.

  13. Labyrinth was the shit Tim Curry’s demon/devil scared the shit out of me as a young bol.

and Flight of The Navigator was that crack. Does anyone remember D.A.R.Y.L
about the robot kid who escapes from the gov’t and gets raised by some middle america family? i stayed renting that shit from Pathmark.

Brings back memories………….saturday mornings watchin the thunder cats an silver hawks

  15. ream-team says:

I’m surprised nobody’s roasted you for not seeing Labyrinth yet, as any self-respecting fan of 80’s movies well should have. Anyway, it’s raw as fuck and you should watch it immediately. David Bowie is the main character and he sings and contact juggles and there’s a farting swamp and all kinds of other cool shit that I can’t remember.

Willy Swagger talkin’ bout “there’s this movie called Pan’s Labryinth…” like it didn’t sweep the Oscars or some shit. Personally, I haven’t seen it and know I should, but if you haven’t heard of it or think that there are people who haven’t you must be under a whole bag of rocks or some shit. And dude obviously isn’t under any rocks. I mean, he has a blog for God’s sake.

  16. J™ says:

Dark Crystal used to scare the shit out of me as a kid.

On the Labryinth, I’ve never seen it, but the wifey loves the movie.

  17. Combat Jack says:

^”I’m surprised nobody’s roasted you for not seeing Labyrinth yet, as any self-respecting fan of 80’s movies well should have. ”

My only excuse for not peeping this was that back in ’82 (Dark Crystal), I was a Freshman in college creeping on mad nappy dugout and keeping my GPA inpeccable. In ’86 (Labyrinth), nigga was taking advantage of being BNOC and gittin ready to go to Georgetown Law School. I take it most of youse were still effin with Gobots and whatnot. No diss of course, just keeping things in perpective.

  18. Eloheem Star says:

Dark Crystal was the shit. I have to watch it again to see if it is dated or classic though. Wizards was the ish. Never seen Labyrinth. I’m way behind in my movie game.

  19. ream-team says:

Combat Jack, Gobots were about the wackest thing ever, but you got years on me, so that’s a pass. In ’86 I was effin with Transformers, MASK, and these figures called Sectars that only me and my cousin remember.

Now get your ass to Blockbuster.

  20. Dart_Adams says:

The freaky animatronic puppets weird me out so I can’t watch this all the way through for some odd reason. Labyrinth was cool, though. I was more into Legend and Time Bandits…Nothing’s fuckin’ with Willow, son! Check out my new “Old School Toy & Cartoon Comics” post on http://poisonousparagraphs.blogspot.com/

    One.

  21. Amadeo says:

^”Labyrinth was the shit Tim Curry’s demon/devil scared the shit out of me as a young bol.”

That’s Legend…good stuff as well and Tim Curry did play that part well.

  22. kaos says:

    damn I feel all bad.
My lady is the second type, she knows I like quirky shit and will tell me stuff like “be a man”…WTF?
That chick should have told me that me watching Red Dawn for the 80th time would get on her nerves before I said I do.

Anyways, I was just talking to my sister, who is like me with the funny oddities and sense of humor.
We were just discussing about Dark Crystal (which reminds me of Time Bandits {era related}) and how that movie is ingrained in our childhood.

Well I hear they are making Dark Crystal 2 all these years later.
    Will have to check it.

This week, I downloaded Krull…check that shit out for “e” rated classic spin offs of Conan.

    Dark Crystal 2 Info

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0460907/

“According to Variety, The Jim Henson Company is going to make a sequel to one of the sites favourite all time movies “The Dark Crystal”!

The new sequel is tentatively titled “The Power of the Dark Crystal”. Creator of the original movie’s script David Odell and newcomer Annette Duffy are developing the script for the new movie. The original film was co directed by both Jim Henson and Frank Oz, but this new project as of yet has no director attached. CGI will feature in the sequel, but it will also have a hefty amount of traditional animatronics similar to the original movie. The movie is expected to be released in Autumn 2007.

The film is set to continue many years later after the original where the Gelflings Jen and Kira are now king and queen. The two heroes of the original movie once again have to save the kingdom, when the mythical crystal splits once more. The Jim Henson Company seem to be investing heavily in this sequel, as an animated series, and several other interactive forms of media are also being developed for its release as well!

This could possibly be some of the best news I have heard for a long time. I loved this film as I was growing up, and I still love it today. Provided this script is good, and they expand on the concepts we saw in the original, this could be fabulous. Now all we need is a sequel to “Labyrinth” and all my dreams will have come true!”
