Rest In Pendergrass…

teddy p

Serious. Sensual. Soulful.

If you were born in the late seventies – early eighties this would be your parent’s soundtrack. If you play this music for someone and you don’t get any action you might be trying to fux a robot.

Eddie Murphy had a great line about how Teddy Pendergrass deep bass voice would scare the panties off a woman. All the falsetto voices and autotune in the current crop of R & B artists reminds me of what we are missing in the game with the passing of Teddy Pendergrass.

‘Come Go With Me’

‘Turn Out The Lights’

‘Love TKO’

As the lead singer for Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes Teddy Pendergrass had the power to make emotional songs that were also empowering. This song was an anthem for me and for the possibility of what my life could be. Thanks TP.

‘Wake Up Everybody’

Teddy P’s music was never ever far from me. My ringtone for the last week or so has been that killer “Believe In Love (Remix)” joint he dropped in the 90’s.

MJ was the King. TP was the Kingpin.

LMAO. I vaguely remember it. RIP Teddy P. RIP Eddie Murphy’s career, for that matter.

I would end parties I spun with “Come And Go With Me…”

I figured if you needed help closing the deal with the chick you’ve been chatting up, then who better, what better for the assist….

In Kings of Comedy concert..Cedric had another great line….

“turn off the lights……light a candle……teddy thinks you’re not listening to you , he starts yelling…TURN EM OFF!!”

    great routine……

I’ve read in different places that the car crash and the sidelining of Teddy was THE pivotal event of R&B music in the 1980s…… with such a strong masculine presence gone….it created an opening and opened the floodgates for softer fluff to get played.

That accident is still something of great speculation in Philly circles. My years there in school and later gave me the most interesting story that came up in a few barber shops and bars, and this is pre-internets.

Supposedly the person in the car servicing TP at the time of the accident was NOT the tranny hooker that was accepted as media fact, but was actually Turqouise Erving wife of Julius. See these two had a Philly rivalry for who was top dog of the town. With TP being the local hero, he had his swag, and Dr. J being Dr. J had his. Allegedly TP was stepping out with Dr. J’s wife, and when the accident happened he used his media clout to protect his soiled wife, and besmirch Teddy in the press. How true is it? I dunno. But a few Philly oldheadstold this story like it was gospel.

I could see that happening….especially in light of the philly press protecting Doc all those years from blowing up his spot about being the father to that tennis playing chick.

I remember Doc and his wife used to be in toothpaste ads..she was fine…

Doc was the man in Philly….I could see it happening….

I’ve lived in Philly before…..Lenny Dystra(phillies) smashed his ferrari after drunk driving down there and charges were never brought up…..they just acted like it never happened…

so it’s not that far fetched to beleive that cops covered up for Doc and that his friends in the press did TP dirty..

@ 40….WOW….never heard that, but hey, stranger things have happened. That is MAD crazy! Word up, Teddy was the man. Tom Joyner replayed an interview he had with Teddy on his radio show this morning. Teddy talked about setting the mood in the studio when recording Turn Off the Lights, how he left Harold Melvin and did his solo thing b/c Harold was shorting everybody on the funds, and how he actually gave a newly-signed, never heard of Whitney Houston her first break. R.I.P. Teddy.

@40. Truth Spoken. Yo just digest the vocals on the last part of “Come and Go With Me”. That has to be the blueprint for Prince’s freak talk.
