DuckDown Was Built For The Long Run…

duckdown

Do you ever stop to think about how long the label DuckDown has been delivering Hip-Hop music as an independent music company? No one else has lasted as long or been as influential to the genre of music. Part of the reason is that the artists on the label have the strength of character to reinvent themselves to the changes in their audience while staying true to who they are as people.

The other reason is that DuckDown understands that the role of the artist is that of marathon runner and not pop music sprinter. DuckDown was built to run marathons from the way they have remained relevant in the music business and their CEO will do just that this November. Dru Ha will participate in the NYC Marathon to raise money for Alzeimer’s research while paying tribute to his father who was afflicted with the disease.

I’m honored that Dru Ha came to Sean Price and myself to help him focus on the training for this grueling event. As you might imagine Sean Price and I have somewhat unorthodox training techniques but I think we gve Dru the encouragement he will need to finish the event. 26.2 miles is pretty much running to the corner store 5000x. Once you break it down that way it all seems so simple.

    “Nipple protection.”

Coaching Error: DruHa should have run to the bizarrely still running c. early ’00s Duck Down mural on Rockaway Ave just past Belmont. How the hell that hasn’t been buffed or ragged in all this time is testament to… something.

Duck Down is a fascinating story, really. I’ve had nearly all their albums and though they fuck up now and then (ironically titled Boot Camp Click “For The People,” awful second Kidz In The Hall album, crazily hit/miss first Rustee Juxx (sorry P!)), as a fan I always feel it’s an honest effort…

… And there are dope hidden gems: barely known Representativz, under-rated OGC debut, high quality ‘street album’ or mix-tape shit (whatever) from Steele and Sean Price. Some of Rock’s beat choices drive me nuts but he murders the mic with a consistency of invention more people should recognize.

Also, I have high hopes for Starang Wondah comeback and the next Black Moon, although ** yet another ** Buckshot + 9th album doesn’t excite me as much.
