Get your shit together party people because it’s officially Hip-Hop week here in NYC. I ain’t mad at VH-1 either for spearheading these events although I admit to be a little piqued at why B.E.T. wasn’t given jurisdiction on this Hip-Hop thing. Then again you know how shit goes down when Black people do it on their own budget… handmade banners, suspect refreshments, and nobody is ever on time…
Yeah, come to think of it, I’m glad the T.I.’s at Viacom put VH-1 in charge of this whole production otherwise this shit might not get settled until sometime in November after Thanksgiving. A few more events have been added to what is already a week chock full of goodies. I am going to list for you some of the free events as well as some of the exclusive one-off shows. Peep game…
On Saturday, October 14th there are three museum events that are all worth your while. From 10am – 6pm the MAGIC JOHNSON Theatre on 125th and FREDERICK DOUGLASS Blvd will host the first installation of the Hip-Hop Culture Centre. This project needs your support by way of your presence. Can you imagine a museum space in NYC dedicated solely to the preservation of Hip-Hop culture? When I traveled through Paris I was amazed at how them French niggas have a museum for everything. They value culture and art like that and I do as well. If Hip-Hop is important to you and you think it can still be a force for positive change I kindly ask you to visit this installation. The more people that attend this will determine if the city funds this project or not. Your attendance is your vote.
Another museum exhibit will be at the Brooklyn Museum of Art from 11am – 6pm titled ‘Graffiti Basics’. Several artists will teach you the finer points of permanent marker and aerosol artistry. The Brooklyn Museum of Art is on Eastern Parkway and Washington Ave.
The Museum of the City of New York has been hosting an installation called ‘Black Style Now’ and I haven’t visited this joint since I take umbrage with the notion of ‘Black Style’. We have to be careful sometimes that we don’t reinforce supremacy in a passive manner. I just so happen to be Black and my style like many Blacks is mega-universal. I can dress, talk and display mannerisms to allow me to adapt to any circumstance. ‘Black Style’ is far too limiting for a brother from the mothership.
I feel like I need to remind you that on Saturday, the 14th, EPMD will be doing a show at B.B.King’s on West 42nd Street. I got the dope corduroy ‘LO fisherman’s cap with the embroidered tackle lures on it. Holler at your boy when you see him in the streets.
DP, I think Ima drop by at BBKings, cuz the kid gets access to all these events now that he’s a satirist for dallaspenn.com lol…whoops did I say that. When we gonna light these internets up?? I’ve been tellin peeps its gonna be christmas in october, after my piece drops lol.
