Can DC Do The Dark Knight Right?

tdkr

I’m a little pissed off that people are talking about doing an adaptation of FRANK MILLER’s ‘The Dark Knight Returns’ without including a Robin character. The current director of the Batman cinematic series, CHRIS NOLAN, says he will jump off the project if he has to insert a Boy Wonder into the mix.

*Newsflash to CHRIS NOLAN: Go kill yourself bitch!

For starters, the Robin character from ‘The Dark Knight Returns’ is NOT a boy wonder, she’s a girl. Second, and more importantly, the character is crucial to the story.

The Robin character is Batman’s last link to his own humanity. Without that character to tether him to the ground he becomes this total maniac curmudgeon with no focus. The Robin character reminds Batman (or does she remind us) that everything he does is for the kids. Just like Wu Tang, but with way more broken necks.

In all the box office glee that ‘The Dark Knight’ has generated most people are starting to forget all the elements that made ‘The Dark Knight Returns’ storyline so incredible. I can flesh them out for you in five simple lines…

1. Batman = Hardbody deluxe curmudgeon
2. Robin = Eager young girl – perfect, who thought of this?
3. Joker = Batman with a better sense of humor
4. Catwoman = Definitely got smashed out in a three-way with BM and Joker
5. Superman = Super douchebag who deserves the ass kicking that Batman gives him

You can’t possibly fuck that storyline up if you address those elements with fidelity. I understand that everyone is all turned on by this portrayal of the Batman who doesn’t smile or crack jokes because he only cracks skulls. But if you read ‘The Dark Knight Returns’ as MILLER really wrote it you will see the humor within the depravity of the characters.

I’m not trying to return to the campy, cartoonish aspect of the Batman live features, but I want ‘The Dark Knight Returns’ to be made as awesome as the book(s) it is adapted from were written.

Hey…I’d pay top dollar just to see Batman give Superman the business like he did in the book. When I read that, it became one of those moments in my life I won’t ever forget. I remember where I was and everything! LOL!

  2. Simba says:

Holdup you can’t be telling Chris Nolan to go fuck himself all willy-nilly he brought the Batman back into that good shit that makes cats buy that high ass 8 dollar popcorn

the batman movie series was so unimaginably far up shit’s creek before, and you’re suggesting that the guy who saved it to go kill himself? if chris nolan leaves this series it’s over.

Thank you dallas for wanting Nolan to actually read the book and stick to the canon . Really …fuck a movie , I’d rather just enjoy the comic . DKR is inevitable though , but since most of the fanfare is from comic loving people like you and myself , there should be no debate about it . From an illustrators stand point , these are drawings with a cinematic take , a real life reproduction shouldn’t be too hard with all of the sophisticated technology we have today.

In other words fuck Nolan …hire Miller for DKR.

  5. I think they might use The Dark Knight returns as a jumping point for an original story…

Frank Miller batman is a little flabby and sick and Christen bale is way too young for that….

Also the films do not seem to be taking part in The DC universe for the most part

They keep striving for some sort of Meta reality

So far no Metropolis, Lois, Daily plant, Queen industries either….

So you can not really get away with a Superman and The Green Arrowbeing in this story …

I would love and I mean love a

Batman Vs. Superman Movie after part 3 comes out …..

I think it be interesting to see what they do with the influences …

Dallas, we had this very same discussion last year and I even listed a few Hollywood chicks that could be cast as Robin. If Nolan is dead set against the IDEA of a Robin he’s a dickhead. When Robin is written correctly he/she is a great supporting character (No Kitty Pride/Jubilee).

    One.

I think at this point all comic heads, nerds, fans should realize that the Hollywood and her directors really don’t give a sh*t about you think.

HOwever, you gotta thank Robert Rodriguez, the folks behind 300, the Spirit and the HUGE upcoming Watchmen film in 2009. They care.
I doubt Hollywood would ever make such a bold move as to stay true to Frank Miller’s vision for the DK because he really does not paint both Batman or Superman in a traditional easy to digest manner.

Just got DKR in the mail today, can’t wait to dive into it.

  9. the_dallas says:

    Inspectah,
Please holer bak at the DP Dot Com family once you bang that out [ll].

    Dart,
If we keep beating the drums then I don’t think the studios can tune us out. I will go ape shit if they fuck up my cinematic experience of TDKR.

    Simba, Snow Monkey,
Chris Nolan did his thing, but he can’t become bigger than the story. The Dark Knight Returns is Frank Miller’s story. It’s weaved in a prose where half of the dialogue isn’t even spoken words, People think that this movie The Dark Knight was such a psychological thriller (the 2 Face reveal scene was effing classic though). The Dark Knight Returns shits on Nolan’s face and makes him eat it 2girls1cup style.

I don’t know about a TDKR movie. Shit is classic, I don’t know how they can make it into a movie though. That, and Frank Miller has gone fuck-nut insane in the last couple years, and I see him ruining it. I mean, have yall read All Star Batman and Robin? I think Frank Miller might secretly hate Batman at this point.

i think with the way that the dark knight ended up coming across, batman already established that he’s a “we are the world” type cat intent on doing what’s best for society meaning that chris nolan knew from jump that he didn’t want to include any robin (male or female) into the mix. most likely he’ll let him come to the conclusion naturally that he should be making love and not war…..personally i think that’s liquid gold- i can only stand one saintly hero at a time in my favorite batman coffee. plus, unlike other adaptors of legendary comics, nolan seems to want to add some semblance of reality to the characters. i’m sure in today’s society a little boy in tights and a bonnie-esque female goes over well- but fuck all that….catwoman for the win;)
