These dudes from the Bushwick Social Club are cool with me. They posted the i.C. film ‘Checkmate’ in a drop at their website. They have invited me to come to their monthly party in Bushwick.
Eh.
Not that Bushwick ain’t the hot little neighborhood right now, but I really can’t fuck with these dudes because they don’t believe DOUG E. FRESH is T.5.D.O.A.
You ain’t really, really Hip-Hop if you don’t know what I’m talking about, or you don’t agree with me.
Ask ERNIE P.
We were at the old Octagon on the west side. Everyone was mobbed up. Tragedy performed and niggas threw ice at him because he was talking that thug shit and the room was filled to the brim with goons. This was no ‘mixed’ crowd of rap fans. This was the Bronx, Brownvsille, Bed-Stuy, and yes, Bushwick. 1992. Lord Finesse even got ice thrown at him when he started doing a ‘freestyle’ of verses everyone had already heard. The crowd was anxious to see KRS-1 and the tension was building up. You know who came on the stage and took the entire crowd and brought them back to a good place?
DOUG E. FRESH is so Hip-Hop. DOUG E. FRESH is my hero. If you don’t know that he is Top 5 Dead Or Alive you need to sit your ho ass down and shut the fuck up.
And I’m not saying this because I’m drunk.

This was from the OAKLEY HIT + RUN artist event.
I need another one of those in my lifestyle.
And speaking of ‘Hit & Run’, I have been bumping this LOLEATTA HOLLOWAY joint for the last few days.
Don’t anyone make real shit anymore?
lol how are there no comments on this gem of a post? i figured i’d be the first to stamp it crucial. real music indeed.
and yes, you’re leaning on that drank. it’s all good though, sir.
*daps Dp* Top 5 in what capacity?? as a Voice entertainer actual Master in Ceremonies? You know who has a good Voice and sounds Dope on Record, Swizz Beats..
MMA = straight up wack
I was watching a match(much to my chagrin) at my homies pad and a dude got disqualified because everytime the other fighter came at him, he would drop to the grown and lay on his back. If that isnt the wackest shit ever, I dont know what is.
Boxing > MMA
LOL…
Fantastic. I love crashing sanitary hip-hop events like this one appeared to be and sully it up with that “realness” that comes from age & experience. The look on these dudes faces was priceless.
BTW – hanging out with drunk Dallas allows me to be the strong silent type while he goes in and does what he does best…
That’s the one thing I think most hip hop artists who are considered really dope lyricist forget one of the most important things.
How to rock a crowd.
This has nothing to do with spitting the illest rhyme, save that for the high school lunch rooms, dorms or fight clubs. If you can’t rock a club like Busta, or even Hammer-who used to open for many popular East-coast acts and literally turn the mutha out. Then go back and practice some more. Too bad the Fugees don’t tour. Forget recording new material, they could just tour and rock venues . . . but that’s dead.

^Farouq Obama,
Everybody is entitled to their opinion but judging a sport on one particular match or event isn’t fair, it just doesn’t hold weight.
Boxing?? Sadly the heavyweight division is dried up and many fans don’t care for the Russian champs. The truly dangerous fighters don’t to fight the mega-stars unless the racked up enough wins, they really can no longer be ignored. See: Mararito or Hopkins who’s finally getting love well past his prime years. There’s a whole lot of ducking going on in boxing. It’s sad, just ask Winky.
Either way, it is what it is, its your opinion and its all good. MMA, boxing, whatever the rules, a fight is a fight.
Man I’ve seen Doug E Fresh shut it down a few times…..Don’t matter who’s performing HE GOES IN…………….
I’ve seen him in a grilchy spot with Capone and Noreaga, then I’ve seen him outdoors tearing it down with Supercat…
his initials are D.E.F.! How could he not be?
Play This Only at Night was so dope, even my grandfather liked that song. PTOAN is my litmus test for most NY producers and DJ’s.
Vee –
You make a great point. I had a long discussion with my man Greg Nice (rap legend and we’re patrons at the same barber shop) about this and we were talking about “all-time greats” and he was adamant about that point and how its not considered enough. Especially considering the history and the original intent of the MC (I’m not gonna go all KRS – eff that ninja). I had to take step back and really evaluate that especially coming from a respected legendary crowd rocker himself. Although it will never shake Rakim Allah from my top spot I, taking that criteria in to the equation does put Doug Fresh up there… Way up there.
BTW – Greg NIce & Smooth B still go on tour and pride themselves on still being able to get the crowd amped and transmit that energy. One N&S show has more energy than a whole Jiggerman Tour.
Doug E Fresh the greatest? I’d vote for him for president. He is one of the most beautiful people I ever met in my life and a crowd rocker. he has forgotten more than most rappers will ever learn.
Ernie Paniccioli author of “Who Shot Ya?”
Doug E Fresh, is definitely top notch and it’s been proven…you have NEVER seen this dude bomb. NEVER! He comes with it everytime, and that, my friends, is the very reason Prince has this dude open for him on tour. Rap cats are forever shook if he goes on first, he has energy unmatched and you AND your Grandmother f*cks wit him.
Ask her.
For real tho’, go see a Doug E. Fresh show.
Two words…
Microphone. Controller.
40,
I’ll say one thing. Ra is definitely one of the best ever lyrically . . . BUT even he knows, especially with his laid back persona, that he has some shortcomings on stage. That’s why many of the southern artist win all day. There’s the call and response that works the crowd. Not some self-absorb, self-righteous super-lyrical cat who thinks all his fancy wordplay is really important.
Greg ain’t lying. That’s why you see Busta and KRS-1 bring the vibe and energy of dancehall artist because they know it rocks. Noriega admits he ain’t the best, but he will get the thugs rockin out hard. And personally, if I’m paying bread to see a show . . . you better really bring it. Man, notice how real students of the game like Chuck D stays fresh on stage. Many hip hop acts can’t really perform after a P.E. set or even a Cypress Hill or Ice Cube set.
A LOT of rappers would do well to take notes from D.E.F.
