In Memphis, The Answer Is The Question…

iverson

Allen Iverson has become as enigmatic as Stephon Marbury when you consider their playing careers and off-court issues. It doesn’t look like Allen will be a starter in the league any longer, not even on a team that smells like asscheeks. I wouldn’t mind if the Knicks picked him up once the Grizzlies release him, but this is why I have a weblog as opposed to a GM position. I doubt Allen could win us any more games than the current backcourt players have a chance to.

My problem might be that I’m still thinking about 2001’s Allen Iverson who was the best player in the game of basketball. Allen might still be reminiscing on that player as well.

Sadly, and ultimately, time marches on.

Why waste it practicing?

well i wouldn’t consider A.I. to be as disruptive as stephon i mean dis dude cried on camera talkin about seein jesus in his shower, dis dude put Vaseline in his mouth because he claimed of a soar throat. Dis dude talked mad shit about his teammates and his coach. I have no respect for “Starsbury” or whatever people like to call him. A.I. I at least respect and has some talent its just his style of play. Hes a shooting guard in a point guards body, and he has to fit in a right system where he is da main component of offense, well it used to be like dat but now i dont know.

Is it just me or did no one really ever build a team around A.I.? It seems like everything was on his back and then people suddenly said, “let’s just bring him on off the bench”. I feel like he will go down as the most talented yet misused player ever.

@Amadeo: The 2000 76ers were specifically built for him and they did get to the Finals against the Lakers, winning the first game and then dropping the next four. As Iverson’s career has progressed, he hasn’t necessarily done the same or been able to make the adjustments to maintain a top echelon style of play.

In fact, the knock on Iverson has always been that while he puts up numbers across the board, he doesn’t make his teammates that much better. The ball needs to be in his hands far too much, and as an undersized 2-guard, he creates problems in being able to run an offense with more than one scorer as well as an offense with a true PG playing next to him.

It could be said that it’s nearly impossible to win a championship with him or even to construct a team with that potential.

Michael Wilbon is pitching Iverson to the Cavaliers but I doubt that especially since D. West is reportedly missing a few bats in his belfry.

Maybe Iverson will go kosher and join the Maccabe club in Israel?

  5. Chris says:

Regardless of whether that 2000 team was built for him, that is a terribly built team. No one could win a championship w/those other bums. Additionally, it’ a sad truth but the Sixers supporting cast got increasingly worse each year thereafter.

While I acknowledge all of the popular AI’s beefs, it’s hard to come to come to a conclusion when he’s been on such garbage squads.

Also, AI for sure would help the Knicks. He’s still way better than any of those bums.

  6. nerditry says:

@Chris: Drink that Kool Aid. Why do you never hear that he is one of the players other guys want to play with? No big name free agent ever tried to get himself on Iverson’s squad.

Iverson just scores now (and not dynamically) and would get dusted re: quickness by guys like Rose and Wade.

@Dallas: Challah! We talking about Shabbat? Shabbat?

  7. Tony Grands says:

It seems to me that his rebellion @ this point is futile. He migth wanna fall back into the OG role, even if he’s coming off the bench, because for every season he’s going back & forth with the front office(s) of these teams, is another year his body’s getting older, & younger, stronger dudes are stepping into the spotlight he once had.

  8. Mark Dub says:

Co-sign @ Tony Grands. Derrick Rose is the new millineum A.I. w/o the baggage. He scores AND makes his teammates better. I’m kinda feeling the A.I. to Cleveland suggestion too, but I don’t know if it’d ever happen.

  9. nerditry says:

@Mark : He’s still coming off the bench in CLE behind [||] Mo Williams in that case unless they play him ahead of Anthony Parker. That’s a backcourt with two guys barely 6ft (and that’s NBA height measurement).

  10. the_dallas says:

The fact that no one jumps up to play with Iverson speaks volumes. Cleveland needs another piece to fux with Boston but I don’t think Iverson is the answer (Holy shit! Did you see what I just did?!?)

  11. $ykotic/Don McCaine says:

But to play devil’s advocate, I wouldn’t want to come off the bench behind some bums either, especially since I know The Grizzlies only want me there to fill empty seats.

I say go 2 the Knicks. D’Antoni’s game is run, shoot, whoever grab a rebound & wait for them to miss on defense. Perfect for AI right now.

lawdhavemercy, the pic up top reminds me of when I was in high school and had pics of Iverson all over my walls. *sigh* carry on…

yeah iverson spent his best years being the center of attention on a team with no help. the sixers all of sudden could play and drop shots when he left. the worse of all was kyle korver he was putting up bricks. when he went to the jazz he became like a three point shooter elite. he had hustle and drive where was this. when he was with philly with iverson. andre became the new iverson when iverson left. nothing to me can hurt more as a player when you drive everyone comes in on you. you kick out the ball to a open player and your teammate doesn’t make the shot. now when that happens all season you don’t even wanna play no more. i think the nuggets worked out for iverson just they needed some big people. that run and gun don’t work on all teams.
