The Highline Ballroom might be my favorite venue in the city to catch a rap concert. The Roots have totally ruled that spot in the 2009, but I saw some other great shows there as well like Rakim, and Jadakiss. Cam’Ron also performed there this summer and that shit was a madhouse. The Highline Ballroom is going out of 2009 on a MAJOR Hip-Hop high note by hosting Mos Def this Sunday 12.20.09.
I last caught Mos Def in concert performing joints from ‘The Ecstatic’ back in August and I was loving it. The show started late but it didn’t disappoint me. You won’t be disappointed either if you come out to this LATE show.
MOS DEF

Since I will be in Atlanta in momdukes basement by then I won’t be able to use my tickets. If you want my pair of tickets to this show just tell me the two(2) best places to catch a Hip-Hop concert in New York City?

Love the video. You make a brutha wish he was in NYC to catch this show, DESPITE the ridiculous cold that I’m sure my southern-born-n-bred soul could hardly withstand.
i’m from chicago so i don’t know shit about NY except what i hear in rap songs – nor would i be able to use these tix, so no need to consider me in the running.
but from rap music, i would have to say:
1 – MADISON SQEEAH … AHH … *SQUAK* (c) camel’s adlibs
2 – wherever “Summa Jam” is – has to be big enough to fit a screen that can show Mobb Deep doing tap dance at a youthful age – Yankees Stadium?
don’t know if u cats have a house of blues, but in chicago house of blues is that jawn
lol @ easter bonnets – classic
BBKings or Highline/SOBs
Highline, SOBs…
Madison Square is poop
Summer Jam is in Giants Stadium in New Jersey, so that doesn’t count.
BB kings is weak. Unless you like pretentious urban single women going to gospel brunch shows.
SOB’s I fux with. But only because the Mickey Dees right next door has this fat butted girl who closes.
Hammerstien is cool.
Nokia is clean. . .in that they sweep it up
Best venue has to be the free ones. . . Prospect Park parade grounds is cool.
Highline story:(Background: Highlione Ballroom is located in the same building as a supermarket. Probablythe second most hood supermarket next to C-town. . . Western Beef)
I was driving a yellow cab last halloween. I stop by the Western Beef to grab some Orange flavred deoderant car spray and some Tropical Fantasy Cola Champagne. I pick up these 2 cats. Mind you the streets are packed all the way up to 23rd. Highline is on like 16. These dudes wanted to go to Grand Central on 42. I’m like OK.
These bleach blond cauc’z started fuckin in the back of my cab. Banging on the back of my seat[||]. I didn’t want to look back just in case a man-but is in the air. (To me the sight of man-butt is more frightening than Man-Bat). So I get them to GC in like 15 minutes and these hom’o’sthrow me a $50 for a $20 ride. These cats made the back of the cab stank nd they knew it. Thank good I bought the deoderant beforehand.
I have not had Cola Champagne ever since
I caught a couple of shows at Terminal 5. Spot is all the way on 12th ave but it’s cool. Saadiq was on some Frankie Lymon ish there.
Other one I will say is SOBs. The sound might not be great all the time but it’s still one of the only spots that gives back that intimate concert experience akin to the days of Wetlands & Tramps(R.I.P.). They don’t do as many big hiphop shows as they used to tho.
SOB’s
prospect park bandshell
@6 100
Ha! Hilarious. Agreed, man-butt is scary. That shit can make the most enjoyable porn unwatchable.
“So I get them to GC in like 15 minutes and these hom’o’sthrow me a $50 for a $20 ride.”
they mentally raped you it was not worth it lmao
wait it was 2 dudes getting it on?! thought it was m-f at 1st. that’s disgusting b. I would have thrown them out. RESPECT THE CAB!
Might not have gotten that $50 tho…hard decision(no pun).
Damn…i’m mad im wild late on this one….
…shit… best joints hands down…
1:Any NY Public Park {i.e. Brower Park or Prospect Park Fort Greene Park… Duck Down did a show there earlier this summer}–one: They are ALWAYS FREE… —two: if the artist(s) is from the neighborhood, they get that extra Balco strength… always a more inspired performance.
2: Highline…. It doesnt get the respect it should get, mostly because it is not a hole in the wall venue with shitty self-important door guys and poor sound at the expense of creating “a grittier experience” {SOB’s ?} … Highline is just good… Door runs smooth… great sound. and you could walk in 2 hours late to Barack Obama spittin “75 Bars” at a Roots Jam Session and still have a good view….
you know i needs those tix fam
BBKings, SOB’s
Damn, $50 for a Mos Def show in NY? Crazy.
Mos murdered the OkayPlayer holiday party. Actually, Mos and Black Thought together. Shit was insanity
