I don’t fux with Burger King at all but I do FUX with Mary J. Blige. She worked on fries before she caught her big break. Now the King is cutting her an official check.
Y’all buggin’. I ain’t mad at Mary gettin’ her bread however she can because y’all commenters who love to remain anonymous are the same people who STEAL everyone’s music.
Mary sold out?!? Nigga please. You are anonymous. You playin’ on the web in a disguise. You ain’t got the right to call ANYONE a sellout. Real talk.
If there was money in it (there isn’t), wouldn’t you rather hear MJB perform an audiobook version of whatever (say) Zora Neale Hurtson you most like?
I don’t know if you’re in NYC but did you that there was a musical “Salute to Gil-Scott Heron” last Friday at Fulton & Classon, some combination of the Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium and the National Black Writers Conference?
No shots at you or DP for not mentioning it and in fact, I’ve just typed myself into agreeing with ya’ll, sorta: why the FUCK are we talking about such nonsense as MJB hawking chicken shit when there’s so much other great stuff, living and dead, out there?
No shots taken. I don’t pretend to know everything going on in the world but I do know that anyone squawking about this MJB spot for Burger King prA’li hasn’t supported her music in forever.
True, true. And it does have me wonder if MJB has been on the road lately, which 1) Is where she could make some paper and 2) Is not an easy lifestyle if you don’t truly love to perform– and even if you do, it’s still a tough road.
Given that, hell yeah MJB should take the money– and spend it not at BK but the Flatbush Food Co-Op!
Good dialogue, as always.
And speaking of the road, any west coast DP fam been checking the Boot Camp Clik tour?
C’mon DP you know damn well she’s above singing about fried chicken. BK gave MJB 2 million for a commercial they later pulled because people are tired of seeing our musical legends degraded. In light of current events that was just bad timing. I can’t knock the hustle but damn that shit was disappointing to see imho. I disagree with the treatment, MJB is a soul music icon that could have just walked into BK to order some fries and that shit would have been just as potent.
Burger King pulled the ad and apologized to MJB about it. They claimed it was unfinished. MJB apologized to fans for releasing an unfinished ad. The people have spoken.
You know, let me jump back in call bullshit on this… Motherfucking Shawn Carter is some kind of ‘cultural hero’ (sic) and MJB is, I dunno, a race traitor because of some silly ad?
My beef was hating BK in particular and fast food joints in general and also wishing artists like MJB had better opportunities in show biz 2012.
That said, I’m much MORE offended by the corporate and publicist lies about why the ad was pulled.
Nice going, Mary!! NOT! Isn’t this move more for an artist early in their career? Why now? Shilling for fast food. Has she taken a look around the community and seen the effects of fast/bad food choices that we coloured people have?
Nah DP Mary type sold out. I though Mary was above shit like this.
Chill, this is MC Hammer/Popeyes status.

Hmmm… Since we don’t know MJB’s financial situation, calling sellout is off-base. What else does she have to sell in 2012 that anyone’s buying?
That said, I think it’s fair to ask about her dignity, ethics and the disgusting crap BK has passed off as “food” for decades.
What would Ruby Dee have done?
Granted, diabetes R&B has been around well before there was greater awareness of the associated health problem–
dig Brooklyn’s own (via Louisiana) Savannah Churchill, “Fat Meat Is Good Meat,” 1942–

Though she’s also doing it for fun and money, not propaganda and money like MJB.
mary j blige can do whatever the fuck she wants. she is fuckin teflon…..an icon and a legend.
I have to disagree illill.

Let Mary sing!
Nah mane…MJB KNOWS that BK’s faux chicken bits are turrible. I ain’t Nas she cashing checks, but BK gotta step their chicken parts game up.
