Peace 2 Ernie Paniccioli…

Ernie P is a big fan of DP.com and one of the most understated historians of my lifetime. Is it because he has faithfully documented Hip-Hop history, as opposed to rock music or jazz? Is it because he has lived a life of talking truth to power? Is it because Ernie can be a surly curmudgeon when he senses a lack of sincerity in others?

The answer is all of the above.

I’m lucky ro call Ernie my friend even tho’ he will spit flames in my comments section over my sneaker collection or my appreciation of the 808s & Heartbreak album. Notwithstanding, Ernie Paniccioli has dedicated a lifetime to documenting the American experience for all peoples of color no matter their level of celebrity or notoriety.

I say all of this because I would like you to consider Ernie’s art if you have a few coins available to you. Ernie has several photobooks self-published on Lulu.com and I promise you they are the best history lesson you can receive on Hip-Hop.

Al Sharpton’s perm did more for civil rights than Rosa Parks.

    Al was frontin’ tho!

He should have let the mustache curl under the lips [ll] to grow the full-blown Stevie Wonder goatee aka “The Pussy”:

    fakehustle.files.wordpress.com/2009/12/stevie-wonder.jpg

The Pussy is the greatest facial hair invention in history because it is so subversive – if a girl will lick your face with your facial hair shaved-up like a pussy, then only natural next step is a wild threesome.

Three cheers for Stevie, who – even with blindness and his wig pushed back minus six degrees + dreads starting in the back of his head like a crazy Avatar – never stopped getting it in.

Ernie has been killing it on FB this weekend. Amazing shots!

  4. Much respect to Ernie and thanks the head’s up, DP, I didn’t realize EP was self-publishing like this. Dude on left in photo IS who it looks like, isn’t it?

Ernie, are any stores stocking these also? I know the $$$ work out best to order directly but just so I can say to folks hey, check out the physical thing here –> _______.

Also, (if you see this), I wonder if you know fellow Brooklyn lens great, Thomas Roma?

My self published book-9 of them including Punk/Graffiti “DEEPER” and “THE TRUTH” “Rap Pop & Soul Headshots” vol. 1 & 2 are also available at amazon.com. Here is the link to the 9 books:
    http://stores.lulu.com/store.php?fAcctID=1751749

My books have early shots of everyone in Hip Hop Bambaataa/Rakim/Mary J/Big/Tupac/ Alliyah/Big Pun/Wu Tang and even little bitch boy Kanye who was called a toolbox by Pink. Anyway I am no longer working, shooting or lecturing so the $3.00 royalty I get from each books helps keep the lights on. Sadly there is no pension plan for Freedom Fighter, Truth Tellers or Hip Hop Photographers. Dallas thanks for this help. Appreciated much, Ernie

people don’t respect hip hop because hip hop doesn’t respect itself

blues, jazz, rock, r&b acts BREAK their necks to pay homage to and provide venues for the ones who came before them.

Ernie, the money is in getting your stuff purchased by public and college libraries .

  7. GREAT suggestion, in theory from getthesenets…

It’s your life work, of course, so it’s not something to part with easily but I’d hope there are institutions who’d be excited to talk to you about your. In blues, jazz & old r&b, the Japanese and Europeans do a lot to pay respect; for all the busllhit ubiquity of a Jay-Z, however, I fear the culture might still be marginalized as far as getting $$$ recognition: Ernie P. for a MacArthur grant!

Ernie, best wishes on not working at the moment, let us know if there are other ways we can help?

Photography is a tough racket, esp. someone with your political commitment– hopefully there are ways up.

Sidenote: a very cool older white dude it’d be great to have an Ernie P. portrait of is writer Peter Matthiessen, author of “In The Spirit of Crazy Horse” and lots of other great stuff.

If I went the fuzzy, ghey, bs route of a Warhol or a politically correct ahole in the flaky art world I could get paid but I’d have to sniff a mountain of coke to face myself.
As far as grants in this economically distressed time and without a Foundation/Institution/Entity to back me, it would be a hard road to plow. If anyone on this blog is serious or has more of a clue than me I am open to everything and anything that will help me and my archive survive. In the meantime all I have is the little book sales.
I tried selling my archive, which covers several genres and 35 years but just as I was close to a deal the economic bottom fell out. Anyway my e-mail is brotherernie@gmail.com for serious leads and I am on Facebook where I suggest folks look at my “Wall Photos” to see the depth of my archive. Thanks to you all and again Dallas thanks for the love (II)

  11. getthesenets says:

9 times out of ten a person looks better thin than fat…..but ever since Rev. Al did the hunger strike for Vieques, Puerto Rico and lost the weight..he’s looked sickly…

  12. Polotron says:

    “and lost the weight..he’s looked sickly… ”

He does NOT look healthy in that shot.

  13. the_dallas says:

    Al looks happy tho’.

  14. Paton is classic in that photo. It looks like a back to the future photo of AG, right before he joined DITC.

  15. RTHSTN says:
