bodega

Guess who’s bizzack?!? The latest video is titled ‘Bodega’ and it features OhWord Dot Com’s RAFI KAM and I doing what it is we do. It took us a lot longer to get all the clearances in order for this clip since we are doing it legal like. VIDEOMASTER CAS films us as we travel around New York City and uncover some urban treasures. RAFI and I are going hardbody after the titles of ‘Internets Celebrities’. I mean hey, since no one else claimed it we figured we should.

For most city dwellers it has become a chore to find supermercados that carry an array of fresh vegetales daily. There are megastores like Pathmark and WholeFoods, but why don’t the local bodegas keep stock in healthy foods? The only thing green, leafy and fresh in a bodega will be the mint flavored Dutch Master cigar (and surprisingly good I might add).

The bodega contains a nutritional system that can only be consumed by those with the steel lining required for all ghetto stomachs. For these people, green, leafy plants don’t provide nearly the same amount of vitamins that a two for $1 iced honey bun has. Combine that with a two for $1 Tropical Fantasy Passion Fruit Punch drink and you are looking at a year’s supply of high fructose corn syrup, all for a dollar.

Bodegas are not just essential to the ghetto food pyramid. but also especially essential to the ghetto alternate economy. This is the economy based on loose menthol cigarettes. Strangely enough their ratio is also two for $1. Without Bodegas how would preteens know which malt liquor to purchase? And where would a young gangsta buy his first set of dice? That’s why I say “Long Live The Bodega!” Or at least our video version of it.

Buen provecho la comida de la bodega, cabron!

  2. The 40 Vuitton Don says:

I’m glad to see someone else other than moi giving proper creedence to the 40 oz.

*OD’s on Lemon Heads and Mystics*

  3. CB4 says:

Funny shit Dallas… you gotta do stuff like that more often. I still drink OE from time to time… brings back memories lol
“I stayed within the yellow food group!” lol

    PEACE

  4. Big Homie says:

Another classic post. I bought a 40oz the other night actually.

  5. Amadeo says:

I am a little disappointed that ya’ll didn’t cover baggies. Additionally do ya’ll give them those names…like my parents would say the Corner Store…but we say the Red Store.

  6. Goliano says:

Chicago has mostly Arab stores with those same “food” choices. The bodegas here are actually like your green grocers. That vanilla moon pie looked good… or was it banana?

    Peace!

  7. P-Matik says:

We have this spot back home in Hampton, VA called Chicken & Pork run by…wait for it…..ARABS!!

  8. Lol…that ishh is so true. I remember when St. Ides had the frozen drink and the Ak’s would sell em’ to us. I was like 10 years old. A St. Ides freezy, A ninja Turtle Pie, and a bag of Wise Salt and Vinegar chips…yum

  9. p-city says:

D, Brilliant… yet it makes ya think. You’re stepping up the game. I’m lovin’ it.

Goliano, the A-rab stores are the shiznit though, because you can buy what you need to wash down the Harold’s chicken and the Dock’s fish sammiches.

  10. Vee says:

    I’m cry-laughing. Good SH*T!!
Notwithstanding the high diabetes that the NY Times not-so-recently covered throughout NY (dangerously high in Washington Heights), high blood pressure and all of that good crap . . . this piece is some what historical, informative and funny at the same time.
Classic Post! Better than the McDonald’s effort.

    You gotta survive!!
Quarter-water, Little Debbie + cheap fruits from an outside vendor . . . Less than $2

  11. Tiffany says:

This was the best! Bo De Ga!

Like ever other city, we’ve got em’ everywhere in Milwaukee, we call em’ corner stores. They sell all kinds of snacks and week old fly infested deli meat, owned/operated by the Arabs. These darn places are like franchises….

  12. The 40 Vuitton Don says:

    “You gotta survive!!
Quarter-water, Little Debbie + cheap fruits from an outside vendor . . . Less than $2”

To add on to that Vee – 1 40 of OE + 3 quarter bags of chips = FRIDAY NIGHT FOR $3.

  14. ELOHEEM STAR says:

    Thats the Pyramid of death.

Reminds me of that dude Rasheed skit on Corner stores.

  15. Combat Jack says:

Good shite man. The new shit these days is the Aki’s selling wide ass, moist and fresh fonta leaves. Yes a ghetto institution, but unfortunately, like 2day’s cRap music, the Bo De Ga’s are killing our youth.

  16. omegaSB says:

mmmmm ballentine …..suprised no private stock …the blood of the gods!!!!

  17. Vik says:

eff mcd’s the deals are at the bodega.

eff the trans fat laws. the bodegas got what i need

    dollar sandwich $1.00
    utz salt ‘n pepper .25
    bag of swedish fish .65
    22 oz ballantine ale 1.00

total $2.90. what more can i say? where else you gonna find a value meal like that?

shiite, you could add two swedish fish and round it up to an even 3.

  18. Lion XL says:

Good shit! But no bodegas beat the bodegas in spanish harlem. When I was doin time in the P.J.’s, Lenox ave had no less than 4 Bodegas per city block. But the good shit was, that even on a sunday you drop by and get your drink. They sold more liquor than the Liquor stores! and you were trusted, they might even let you in the back to get that other good stuff(Cough!) or a weapon or two……

  19. jdotnicholas says:

    Dallas –

Man, that’s that shit right there. In Philly, it’s Corner Store – tho the price is still the same.

At the one spot I used to inhabit around my boys’ way, they had looseys of saltines.

saran wrap, + 10 crackers and a twist tie = truth.

Keep doing it. I got a headache now from laughing now.

  20. Goliano says:

p-city, unfortunately Dock’s bit the dust about 3 years ago. Now it’s Sharp’s and Hook’s Chicken and Fish (both Arab) and Harolds. Man, I miss dem Fishwich’s!

  21. AC says:

funny stuff. this reminds me of the pretty toney “hustlers diet” mtv spot. you have to get “those butter-crunch joints” and “peanut butter and jelly is still hood.”

  22. get fresh says:

No Bodega in the desolate state of South Carolina. We don’t even have 40oz.’s!! But every hood in SC has quarter water! That’s a staple. What the fuck was that yellow soda?! Looks like piss in a plastic bottle.

  23. noz says:

    official cocaineblunts.com corner store desert:

1x 40 oz. bottle of mickeys fine malt liquor
    1x small bottle orange juice
2x little debbie oatmeal cream pies

  24. noz says:

and by desert, i clearly mean dessert.

  25. J trademark says:

Lovin’ it. Keep up the good work…

  26. dubble13 says:

    Bodegas are the TRUTH!

As a kid, bought a LOT of stuff from the Brooklyn bodega. Inever knew what the hell the food actually was, but I knew I could afford it…

    BO – DE- GA !!!!

    This is another DP winner…

  27. Tony says:

Awesome. I like the directors cut more for some reason. Maybe because it’s more for your money just like Bodega fare.

MONEY LINE: “If you ain’t eating Utz, you’re eating butts.”

    Classic.

These vid posts are just nice Dallas. Better than Ze Frank because you leave your pad, an amazing feat for a blogger.

  28. Candice says:

    Hmmm….

A bag of Funyuns (or Old School Wise Onion Rings in the light green bag)
Bon Tons Salt and Vinegar Chips
A Cola Champagne or Cream Soda
A handful of Big Blo’s Gum
And a pack of Boston Baked Beans……

For less than $2!!!!! What you know about dat?

  29. twerkolator says:

^what you know about the candy lady (an ATL hood institution in the 80s) selling them pickled pig’s feet in that pink brine?

  30. in VA, we call quarter waters…hugs.

  31. holymansound says:

I had a Bodega Lunch today

    $.25 BBQ chips
$.25 Orange dream ice cream bar
    $.50 over ripe mango
$.75 Quarter waters (3) we call them Teenie’s in Boston
    $.25 Goya Maria Cookies

The Bodega nourishes the city. What other stores sell hope(lotto tickets), and Cashes payroll checks, and get the community newspapers, party flyers, Bidi’s, and talk to the yout’ dem in the front of the store. Don’t sleep on the overripe mango’s.

  32. c says:

sad to say, there are no bodegas in kansas city. not that i know of. i’m surprised you didn’t mention that, tony. this is a drivin’ town!

  33. NoMamesBuey says:

yo I love yall (pause) & everything, but yall should credit Ghostface with this idea.

Reading IFux’s blog http://www.ifux.blogspot.com/ I came across this Ghostface link, go 2 minutes in to this youtube clip

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m76w6wUHXdI

  34. the_dallas says:

    ^Mames,
Real talk, explain why someone else needs credit for the clip? I seen this series a while ago and I need to know why you think Ghost deserves a credit for the Bodega clip?

Because they filmed in a bodega?

Because he said the word honey bun?

Because he talked about buying groceries for less than five dollars?

If you think these two videos are the same then your depth of perception isn’t too deep. Just because someone says the word fresh doesn’t mean that every one saying the word fresh after him owes him anything. Ideas are varied and individual. I’m confused as to where you find this content similiar.

  35. NoMamesBuey says:

^ same topic of how you can get a “value meal” en la bodega.

  36. the_dallas says:

^where does the term ‘value meal’ originate? do they need credit as well?

  37. NoMamesBuey says:

damn Dallas, I didn’t say there “were the same video”, just said maybe give a credit since you have the same topic.

Maybe you disagree, if so cool. Don’t take it personal (c) Gang Starr. Both videos were good.

  38. the_dallas says:

    ^ Is it obvious that I haven’t self-medicated today?
