AMY WINEHOUSE Has Got Issues…

amy

I’m not as hip as y’all might think. I slept on this chick AMY WINEHOUSE for months until C.S. played her album for me. I closed my eyes and I swore that I was listening to LAURYN HILL. I love the naked emotion that she transfers through her music. I expect to hear a track with her doing nothing else but crying out loud.

AMY WINEHOUSE continues a long line of white women from Britain doing sould music. Remember LISA STANSFIELD? And there was SINEAD O’CONNOR? I can never forget SADE either. WINEHOUSE’s voice and style even separates her from all of those great singers. On her most recent album ‘Back To Black’ she is accompanied by the Dap Kings. These dudes are the house band for the Daptones music label. They specialize in a sound that is reminiscent of 1950’s rock and soul.

AMY WINEHOUSE is getting as much press for personal life as she is for her music. She appears at some of her performances drunk or drugged up and other times she just cancels her show outright. There’s the story of AMY vomitting on stage after a performance because he was so fuked up. The truth is that I can dig on a chick that vomits publicly. Not that dry heave crap either, but actual chunks baby.

She was advised by her management company to go into a rehab clinic and get her shit straightened out. Her response was to fire that management company and write a song about NOT going to rehab. Give her credit for her gullyness. She’s even sassy enough to pen a song telling people to stop leeching off her drug stash. AMY WINEHOUSE has got issues that’s for sure, but I ain’t mad at her one bit. Until LAURYN comes back to us I will settle for this bootleg British export.

  1. When I was in London I saw her, she opened the show by paraphrasing that old, lame rapper kick off by shouting “Throw your twats in the air, spread em like you just don’t care, and if you want them stuffed scream Oh Yeah”. Needless to say I was scoping out the birds (english for young horny females) that screamed the loudest. Also she was wearing some white see thru thing with no panties and no she does not let a razor touch her pink poooonannnay-Fuck PETA-I love FUR. Who else?-Ernie

lauryn hill is overrated (and “miseducation” sucks compared to “back to black”) in my opinion. i don’t know why, but it irks me when people compare her and amy winehouse…

    also, isn’t Sade mixed?

  3. 40 says:

I love this album… It honestly craps on all the MTV driven pop crap (and cRap) that has dropped. I gotta tip my had to these chicks, Amy Winehouse, Joss Stone to name a few. They got a nicee retro vibe and flavor to the music with out coming off cheesy. Plus AW is a rowdy drunk WG which is always a fun demographic for Uncle 40.

  4. I Fux says:

I am not realling feeling this herion chic broad but she can sing………but I am truly disappointed in you Dallas if you have the More Fish album she has a song with Ghostface and it goes to show that the TI’s and Jay over at Def Jam slept on releasing that song as the single to get Ghost Some White Love…………

  5. I Fux says:

    I Fux= Ghostface Stan……….JIC

  6. Vee says:

It is sad and interesting that many recording artists have been rocking retro-soul (not neo*) grooves for quite a while, but I guess some artist get promoted and marketed heavily. Dollars talk.

I just hope people take the time to purchase and explore some of the albums put out by those 60’s – 70’s soul music recording artists. Take the time to listen to some of those old Stax tracks and deep soul records, you might even have a greater appreciation for how these new artists are appropiating the old sounds, or maybe not.

That second photo is tight, I just don’t know why.

  7. And coming around the bend….

  8. Candice says:

I have been listening to Back to Black for a few months now. I like her style. She’s got a boatload of personal issues but who doesn’t? At least Amy owns up to hers. Rehab is my joint. No…No…No

  9. the_dallas says:

    I FUX,
I heard the More Fish track but I didn’t fucks with Winehouse because she sounded too gimmicky. When I finally listened to ‘Back To Black’ I thought she had talent.

    Twerk,
‘Miseducation’ sucks?!? Nahh mayne, that is just crazy talk. Lauryn’s voice is a Hip-Hop treasure like listening to some B.I.G. spit.

  10. ruimixx says:

Man, I’m gonna have to agree with Twerk. Lauryn’s overrated and is that bad, mean kinda crazy.

  11. 40 says:

What kind of fuckery is this? You made me miss the Slick Rick gig!!!!

  12. eskay says:

check out the Rehab remix with Pharohe Monch I have up.

  13. twerkolator says:

    dallas,
maybe me word choice was a little too strong, but i’ve just never been a fan of lauryn hill’s (or the fugees for that matter). i think “miseducation” received the acclaim and sales that it did not because it was that good, but because everything else at the time was that bad.

to reiterate though, “back to black” > “miseducation.

    vee,
i don’t think amy is getting promoted or marketed that well. i went to bestbuy to buy it on the release date and they didn’t even have it (and not because it sold out – they just hadn’t ordered any). no one i’ve talked to has heard of her (full disclosure: i talk to a lot of morons though). i haven’t seen any of her videos either (except on the internet).

i think her marketing and promotion is on par with, if not worse than, most artists these days…

  14. miss ahmad says:

she reminds me a bit of Billy Miles.

  15. P-Matik says:

I copped this joint back in February. She can sing and that “You Know I’m No Good” joint is tight. Other than that, I could barely make it through the album. Not that it isn’t good, I just never liked that ’50s Etta James soul sound.

Good look for Salaam Remi though!

  16. SordidPuppy says:

Winehouse has been S.P.’s official number one squeeze for a minute now (http://foodmantooth.blogspot.com/2007/02/when-i-say-porn-yall-say-porn.html), so hands off. She probly scares the poop out of most people anyway. Or maybe scares people with poop. Dallas, I agree wholeheartedly with your endorsement of her vomitorious stage show. Just surprised you didn’t mention her contemporary Lily Allen, who I feel is ATTEMPTING to pull of a IMITATION of Wino’s style. This shit is some of the only decent music that gets any exposure these days.

  17. Shonquayshah says:

    um, isn’t she Jewish?
that equal black in my book…not impressed!
stop hatin on lauryn…it’s common knowledge that it take 9 and three quarters years to get your head str8 after dealing with that wicked Jamaican dick!

  18. Jewish does not = Black

    Jew = Maybe

    Jewish = Not so much

That’s saying aqua and navy are both blue hues.

    aqua = blue-ish

    navy = blue

the suffix ‘ish’ is used to describe a not all the time state or condition.

  19. sasha says:

lily allen is some good listening.

@SHONQUAYSHAH. why cain’t nobody else see that jamaican dick hex thats been laid pon her?!?!? lauryn unplugged looked like she’d been sleeping in a coffin and sounded like she was drinking ground up rocks for bruffust. no rasta, no cry!

  20. I Fux says:

Ahhh shit this hoe is Jewish no wonder she made the proclamation that she knew “she was no good”

  21. NoMamesBuey says:

I listened to this “Back to Black” album off of the recommendation of Questlove on okayplayer, who is a big Winehouse stan

I thought it was music with quality instruments & singing, but without replay value.

If I wanted to hear some 60s soul, shouldn’t I get just listen to the OG stuff like Diana Ross/the Supremes?

Also Winehouse uses her substance addiction like a gimmick, ala cRap type beef ala Game/50.

Anways, IMHO the GOAT white woman R&B singer of the 2000s is Nikka Costa. Winehouse (aka Elvira?) album is not in the same ballpark with “Everybody Got Their Something” OR Lauryn’s “Miseducation”. Peep my blog post about it

    http://elgringocolombiano.blogspot.com/2007/03/nikka-costa.html

  22. Tiffany says:

Damn, ol’ girl said she was “tighter than air port securities” when it came to her weed!!! That’a real.

Ima roll with Lauren on the comparison tip. I was listening to a song she did with Carlos Santana and Cee-Lo last night. Want her back ASAP. Need to send her a post card that would read “Wish you were here! (back in music)”

  23. Eloheem Star says:

    What up fam.

The miseducation and the Score is two of the best rap albums of all time. If you judge LH on vocal ability she’s average, but if you combine her singing + lyrics + creativity + flow she’s untochable. Nikka Acosta is pure talent. I have not heard the Amy Winehouse or lily Allen albums yet. I’ll check them out soon as I get a chance.

Cosign on stax music Vee. Isaac Hayes is that dude.

  24. bfnh says:

lily allen & amy winehouse are gettin’ props over here? listen up beatnuts, it’s okay to feel a lil’ randy and want to snog and shag a british drunkard, but let’s not get beside ourselves.

    http://brandonsoderberg.blogspot.com/2007/03/amy-winehouse.html

as far as hip-hop goes, the miseducation is overrated. lost one is that alex ross kingdom come of scorn woman, but, that’s only one song. on the r&b tip, miseducation shits on back to black. back to black isn’t as good as back in black. shouts out to angus’s school uniforms.

  25. Amadeo says:

Lauyrn is in my top 10 female emcees of all time…for real for real.

I fell in love with Res because she hawked a loogie off the stage at a show in D.C. once. Plus she’s a trout mouthed heathen.

Heard of Winehouse, but never heard her…guess I got some studies to attend to.

  26. jen says:

lily allen is the truth; loved her right away.

heard three amy winehouse tracks: WERE NOT FEELING THEM. finally saw a clip of her perform live on youtube.

amy’s drunk ass live = 10x better than amy on wax. amy on wax sounds, as dp put it, “gimmicky”.

i do not hear the lauryn hill similarity. lauryn is the golden truth.

will dl, er, purchase amy’s album since you people are all on her strap-on and try to give her half-dead ass one more chance.

Sinéad O’Connor is Irish. The Irish are not British.

  28. Shonquayshah says:

way late…..very busy…but um, er, ah…i guess you can catergorize me as “blackish” then… or African-Americanish…anyhoo i’m not impressed…new millenium barbara striesand from across the pond!

  29. NoMamesBuey says:

^damn Barbara Streisand? That’s even more etherific that Elvira!

  30. jen says:

i would like to amend my comment. the tone of her voice is similar to lauryn’s at her lowest comfortable register, however, she has greater range than lauryn hill and her phrasing is entirely diff.

  31. NoMamesBuey says:

I listened to the new Joss Stone album “Introducing Joss Stone” over the weekend.

The champion British Jewish white R&B woman singer is definitely Joss Stone.

    Joss Stone > Amy Winehouse

They both sing well, but Stone has way better beats.

If that rumor that Stone was “fockin Raphael Saadiq for tracks” is true, it certainly worked. Saadiq made some great beats for this album here.

  32. peter says:

People who think Amy Winehouse is original are out of their mind. Since some people claim she sounds like Lauryn Hill I wonder if it is a coincidence or is this used as a marketing strategy by her label or management so that she could sell records like Lauryn, of which I doubt she will. To make things even worse some say she is a combination of Lauryn Hill and Billy Holiday, in what sense I clearly do not know. To me Amy is just a singer and Lauryn represented many things, here is just a summary:

    • Interviews with her High School Teachers – A brilliant poetry writer, speaks with authority and possesses intelligence, very charming and she would standout
    • The Producer – She has written and produced songs for Aretha Franklin, Cece Winans and Mary J Blige (The Score, Miseducation and Unreleased Material)
    • On the Fugees – Lauryn Hill is very talented one of the creative source for the success of the Fugees, she proved her abilities as a true artist, can sing, rap intellectually, write and produce (the Score the biggest selling hip hop album in history over 20 million copies worldwide)
    • Working with John Legend – John Legend played the piano on Everything is Everything – What he said about Lauryn during the production of the Miseducation – He was inspired by her writing abilities he would sit with her in the studio and her ideas on the songs she wrote were out of this world
    • Working with Mary J Blige – Mary describes her as a musical genius
    • Interview with DJ Period – Very talented and the greatest female MC he has ever worked with and an inspiration to many
    • Talib Kweli – Lauryn is the one, she has skills, gifted, she gives us hope and courage
    • Talk shows and Media Interviews – Journalists describes her as the most versatile artist of her generation, multitalented, intelligent, shining star, Bob Marley on the 90s, Diva of the next millennium, socially and politically conscious, a true poet, street smart, charismatic, original because she sings songs with a high moral ground, she made music history by becoming the 1st female artist to win 5 grammys in one night, very influential, a true role model, and inspiring
    • On her image – Did not portray sex gimmick images to sell records or to be recognised, had that simple glamour that ordinary people can identify with, kept her natural look she was not ashamed to embrace her black roots and beauty, people of different races and cultures embraced what she represented, did not allow the limelight to define who she is, very simple and accessible
    • As a Humanitarian – When she became rich she established an outreach organisation called the Refugee Project – Its Role was to support a two-week overnight camp for at-risk youth, as well as supporting well-building projects in Kenya and Uganda, She has also staged a rap concert in Harlem to promote voter registration. In 1999 she received three awards at the 30th Annual NAACP Image Awards. In 1999 Ebony magazine named her one of “100+ Most Influential Black Americans”. She was named with Congressman Jesse Jackson, Jr. and others among the “10 For Tomorrow,” in the EBONY 2000: Special Millennium Issue. Her charity work includes some of the work she has done globally that has not been published
    • Lauryn’s music – Very rich in content and very intellectual, she had so many things to say she was well informed be it socially, politically, educationally or otherwise, and she was open minded. Amy sings about drugs, alcohol, and turbulent relationships, and how this equals Lauryn‘s music it’s clearly a mystery and non-sensical.

  33. ipps says:

I am really confused I don’t understand what the hype about Amy’s music. I have heard 2 songs from her latest album and I have seen her videos on MTV but I did not see or hear anything spectacular at that time, I actually thought she is a transvestite, she looks like a man and so terrible. I only started having an interest when I heard that she is being called the “White Lauryn Hill”. After seeing her performance at the MTV movie awards I am truly saddened nothing phenomenal as compared to Lauryn. Her voice was so weak nothing to ride home about and she lacks stage presence. I was so disappointed I just feel that she is just another white chick getting credit for copying someone else style. As for her comparison to Lauryn Hill, seriously now I am going to shoot anyone that calls this woman the White Lauryn Hill. Lauryn Hill‘s music represented many things she was more a poet, an intellect and an educator, and how that equals singing about drugs and alcohol I am really puzzled. SHE IS DEFINITELY A LAURYN HILL RIP OFF. It does not even get better this woman is a junkie and rappers are busy promoting her music, anyway I don’t blame them that is why we always insist that education is very important, rappers are forever associating themselves with trash its sad. Her people are even promoting her image as a junkie it is obviously a publicity stunt to make her sell records. I don’t care whether she introduced something different or she is better than most of these young so called divas, but I still insist she is not a good role model with that image. I bet you guys if she was black with that image we will be tearing her down and calling her all sorts of demeaning names.

WHERE DO YOU COME FROM? I THINK YOU MUST BE THE GUY WHO CALLED HOWARD STERN TO MAKE FALSE/MALICIOUS CLAIMS HAT LAURYN HILL IS RACIST. U MUST BE JEALOUS BECAUSE LAURYN BROKE ALL THE STEREOTYPES ABOUT BLACK PEOPLE IN AMERICA. SHE COMES FROM A MIDDLE CLASS FAMILY BACKGROUND, SHE WENT TO UNIVERSITY, SHE WAS STREET SMART AND INTELLEGENT, POLITICALLY AND SOCIALLY INFORMED, ALSO MULTITALENTED. DO YOU KNOW ANY WHITE CHICK IN THE SHOWBIZ THAT POSSESS ALL THESE THINGS. YOUR RICH PARIS HILTON, BRITNEY, LINSEY AND THE REST OF THEM ARE BIMBOS, IGNORANT, UNEDUCATED, ALL THEY KNOW IS TO SCREW EVERY TOM, DICK AND HARRY IN HOLLYWOOD, PARTIES AND DESIGNER CLOTHES (PUBLICITY WHORES), AND AMY DOES THE SAME THING. WHEN LAURYN WAS AT THEIR AGE SHE DID A LOT OF CHARITY WORK AND STAYED AWAY FROM THE PAPARATZI. SHE MIGHT BE GONE BUT A LOT OF PEOPLE STILL REFER TO HER MUSIC, HUMANITARIAN WORK AND SHE IS STILL WELL RESPECTED. HOW CAN YOU COMPARE LAURYN A POLITICIAN WITH AMY A PERSON WHO SINGS ABOUT DRUGS AND ALCOHOL. IT IS REALLY SAD WHEN WE HAVE YOUNG PEOPLE WHO PROMOTE USING DRUGS WHEN WE NEEDS MORE ARTISTS LIKE LAURYN TO INFORM THE YOUTH ABOUT WHAT IS HAPENNING IN THE WORLD.
