I’m A Stan For SPIDER-MAN…

spiderman week

For me it’s a story about the first comic book character I ever tried to draw. Then it becomes the realization of a character who doesn’t feel the skin he’s in. Spider-Man is the transcendant story of a teenager coming of age in the world. Imagine yourself feeling powerful and nearly invincible, but at the same time you are scared to kiss a girl because of your acne. What endears Spider-Man to you aren’t his strengths, but his weaknesses, his flaws. Marvel Comics forever broke the mold for the genre by portraying someone so inadequate and ultimately heroic not because of his power, but because of his responsibility to himself.

I have a few more DVD’s to mail away and I want to extend myself to the readership that has children at home.

  • ELOHEEM, you are steady in my comments section. Send your snail mail address to my e-mail address so I can shoot you a video.
  • Anyone else that wants a copy of the first Spider-Man movie in this current series only needs to answer this question. What is the mantra that Peter Parker/Spider-Man lives his life by after the death of his Uncle Ben?

“with great power comes great responsibility”…..?????

pretty sure that’s it. i have a 12 year old brother who’ll thoroughly enjoy his own copy. (grins)

AND my final is still not done. o(-_-)o

      it’s already been said.

meanwhile, i agree about peter parker. what also endears him to me is the idea that a regular cat can do great things. i do love that mantra, because it ultimately means holding those with ‘great power’ accountable for what they do. however, when it’s all said and done, responsibility belongs to ALL of us, and ‘great power’ isn’t merely about having super-human powers. it’s about being a super human.

(blushes) i’m a smidge ashamed to admit that i’ve had a take home final for damn near two weeks and i’m starting on it this morning. last night i looked at the book (minus reading any words) and this lil bugger is due at 3pm. 😀

i tried to gangster the prof into just giving me a pass yesterday. after he dashed my hopes i went back to procrastinating. he said maximum 14 pages single spaced…..i’m on page 2. absolutely no motivation. i been had my degree. just need a pass to get reimbursed from my employer.

how are you? when are we gonna hammer out some details on saving our society?

    7. FBombs says:

Spider man who has so many spin-offs it’s ridiculous. For the sake of dollars, they continue the series with no real plan or direction. Well that’s my little opinion even though I don’t read comics like I used to.

Marvel shook things up a bit like the recent Civil Wars, which I haven’t read yet. Captain America is dead or is he? Superman died at one point. Does Marvel even develop new characters or stories? I can see why kids at Barnes and Nobles consume Manga all day. TokyoPop have new sh*t, regularly. Well movies and videos bring in more paper than comics though.

I don’t know if you checked out the Back in Black series but Aunt May recently got shot and Peter Parker publicly known as Spiderman is taking off the kid gloves. I’m following this series.

If you didn’t get a chance to, you should check out the Reign series. The story is pretty tight.

      Vee,
My homey Chencho from the DP MySpace page hit me off with a internets comic called Preacher. I haven’t peeped it yet, have you?

      Where’s J Dot?

    12. Amadeo says:

Late…Anyway Parker is the man, the hero for students, starving artists and generally broke people.

    13. wax says:

“to boldly go where no spider has gone before”

er …. wait thats not it!

    14. Vee says:

D, I mess with the Vertigo comics line. I haven’t checked out Preacher yet, but 100 Bullets is my joint.

    15. Combat Jack says:

    16. Grand Master says:

yo one note on this one tho…

what uncle Ben actually said was “with great power must also come great responsibility,” a fact that was pointed out in an essay i read a long time ago and have since largely forgotten…

point is, power doesn’t make the powerful person a responsible dude (holla at me GEORGE BUSH), but it puts a moral imperative on the powerful person to be a responsible person. It’s still up to that person to choose whether or not to assume the burden of responsibility…

    17. jdotnicholas says:

      DP –

PREACHER is gully as fuck. You’ll love ALL of that. I don’t co-sign off on a lotta shit, but PREACHER is that crack. Go to Jim Hanleys in midtown and tell them you need that hook.

Oh man. I wanna read that shit again!

The same team that did that Steve Dillon/Garth Ennis got handed PUNISHER a while back, but I didn’t care. You can’t have it all.

    18. x7an says:

      Dp,
I gotta an 11 yr. old who mos def would dig spiderman if you have anymore. She’s was bugging off the action figures. I put them up beside my velvet painting of one of my favorite black superheroes, 70’s Stevie Wonder. I’ll shoot you a pic when i get a chance.

Combat Jack, thats a pretty ill list. Mage is most definately one of the most slept on books now a days. You cats are gonna make me and the seed take a trip to the comic book store this week. In fact DP why don’t we get a post where cats can post the best series that have been reprinted in trade paperback’s. Right now I’m loving those classic Xmen phone books Marvel is putting out.

Any of you cats peep Quantum and Woody? Back in the days one of my boys used to bring them to work and it used to have me dying. Priest’s work is always on point.

    19. the_dallas says:

      x7an,
I will send you a Spidey pack this week, actually I have one more pack left so it’s all yours.

    20. x7an says:

Word. I appreciate that. I had actually forgot about the request and was just comming to see what books cats had recommended incase me and the seed hit the comicbook store this weekend.

Damn, I can’t believe cats have no love for Priest or Quantum and Woody.
