Is It Live, Or Is It Memorex?

L BOOGIE and her photo negative, AMY WINEHOUSE

I’m sorry I missed the LAURYN HILL in Brooklyn a few weeks ago. I blame myself for being on some Hollywood shit. I got to the park on some celebrity shit and the police were not having it. Unfortunately, LAURYN HILL performed in front of a bunch of people that wanted to hear some shit from the radio as opposed to a live band doing their thing. Black folks are funny that way. Anytime someone Black picks up a guitar some grade school dropout in the audience will scream out “white people music!”

Something similar happens to most popular music that is consumed by Blacks as well. Jigs only want that trendy shit that ends up on the radio. If veteran rappers didn’t have white kids supporting their music they would be bagging up groceries at the local Kroger’s. This is how music comes re-packaged from Europe and jigs co-sign it like it some brand new shit. I’m not hating on chicks like AMY WINEHOUSE so much because she actually has talent, but certainly no more ability than JILL SCOTT, or the crazy chick whose throaty voice she apes, LAURYN HILL. I love remakes and covers and even copycats as much as the next guy, but I love the O.G.’s because that is where the essence of the soul lies. Forget this preachy rant and just remember this… RESPECT THE ARCHITECTS!

ETTA JAMES – ‘I Just Wanna Make Love To You’

THE PARLIAMENTS – ‘I Just Wanna Testify’

THE SUPREMES – ‘Where Did Our Love Go?’

FINE YOUNG CANNIBALS – ‘Good Thing’

GLORIA JONES – ‘Tainted Love’

SOFT CELL – ‘Tainted Love + Where Did Our Love Go?’

You ain’t never lie. When people holla that “white people music” at me over some rock I have two responses: Chuck Berry and Jimi Hendrix…bitches.

In defense for Miss Winehouse she could possibly work on that “Next Teena Marie” spot. I remember when I was in the barbershop in Harlem when all these cats saw what she looked like for the first time and were bugging because she was white. Even due to her swarthy complexion cats were trying to argue that she could be “mixed”. All in all I think Amy did it right, she came in the game respectful of those classy classic women that came before her and ripped shop (BTW her first album “Frank” >>>> “Back To Black”.) Now everyone is on her ass about being crack skinny and shit. Music is an auditory experience, but in this media driven society it seems that the visual is more important even when the medium is not based in sight. My one challenge for AW is that she gonna stay true (which I think will be easier because she’s a Brit) or is she gonna invoke her “priviledge pass” and move on like so many others…

  3. Fock Winehouse.

She’s using gimmicks like her substance abuse & unprofessional behavior like showing up high at concerts. Her gimmicks are as tired/boring as cRapper beef.

Without Winehouse’s gimmicks + whiteness, no one would care about Winehouse.

Real soul singers like Jill Scott daughter Winehouse epically.

Hell Winehouse even loses the micro-niche “British white Jew 80s baby R&B singer” crown to Joss Stone.

We are normally in agreement, but i have to dissagree about the Lauren Hill concert in Brooklyn. See what happened was that her band played for a good half hour before she even came on stage, and had I gone to a Jazz concert, I would have loved it, because they were actually a good band, but I was there to see Lauren (or however she spells it). Even if the new music that she came out with was hot, people would have appreciated it, but it was untinteligible jibberish. Do better Black folks!

I can’t get into Winehouse. She doesn’t impress me at all. I agree El, I think she’s on some gimmicky ish too.

I like Lauryn and hopefully she can make a comeback but I also don’t mind her being a bit creative/different with her music. I’m all for something new. She’ll get it together…

^^ The good Captain has a P-Funk Pirate Radio Podcast coming up and Fuzzy Haskins will be prominently featured for his harmonies (as well as Glen Goins R.I.P.)

    ^co-sign 40. Frank >>>> Back To Black.

i zoned out one night and listened to “take the box” like 70 times in a row…that’s my word!!!

on another note, amy winehouse >>> lauryn hill (who, as i commented in a previous post, is overrated)

  14. speaking of neo=soul, IMHO D’Angelo’s “Brown Sugar” = 90s neo-soul version of Illmatic

    http://elgringocolombiano.blogspot.com/2007/08/dangelo-1995-brown-sugar-neo-soul.html

    Discuss!

  15. the_dallas says:

^ D’Angelo was very important to music and labels were trying to imitate him with their R & B acts for sure, but calling it Illmatic is reaching, especially since D had like a couple of covers on that album.

    @Twerk,
Saying that Lauryn Hill is overrated is a played out rhyme. She’s actually more like the lady version of D’Angelo, minus a few car accidents.

  16. coqui says:

^cept D’angelo dropped two albums, and made a sizeable bunch of appearences on other peoples work, while L-boogie (cuz I don’t care how yous cats spells ‘Lauren’) dropped one. I’m kinda with twerk on this one, though i think she get’s more hate than neccessary. Also, I keep hearing people hate on Winehouse over her drug ‘gimic’. Meh, the girl can sing and I enjoy her song writing, not really worried about gimics, which are for dumb people who don’t actually listen to the music. Are white people keeping R&B alive too?
