Vampire Hunter D isn’t your traditional Halloween night movie. It’s more along the lines of future fantasy. VHD is ultra-Japanese manga animation similar to the Wind Ninja Chronicle. The fact that even after twenty years it is still regarded as one of the greatest manga movies is proof of its cult classic status.

The Vampire Hunter D exists in the far future when vampires have nearly supplemented the human race on Earth after a nuclear holocaust. D is what is called a Dhampir. He is a hybrid of human and vampire genetics. The half human, half vampire hybrids are the perfect vampire killers because they have the strength and intelligence to rival the fearsome killing machines.

D roams the planet as somewhat a ronin and a mercenary. Like all the best westerns there is the code of the single solitary gunslinger who lives alone to die alone. Vampire Hunter D is such an achievement because it is so well written, but what is even more outstanding is its artwork.

YOSHITAKA AMANO is the artist that designed the characters for Vampire Hunter D. AMANO worked in Japanese animation since the early 1960’s and he was an artist for the old Speed Racer cartoons. He is the father to the style of one of my favorite artists, BILL SIENKIEWICZ. I love the way he uses light, darkness and shadows to define his characters. AMANO reached mainstream acclaim through his design of the Final Fantasy project. Here’s a link to some of AMANO’s sketches.

you talkin bout the old one or the newer one? they both sick anyways but gotta get my facts straight

  2. the_dallas says:

^ The OG joint. I didn’t even know there was a new one until I just looked it up. I gotta NetFlix that jawn.

  3. omegaSB says:

Your facts are a little off to the style of my man BILL SIENKIEWICZ… Amano definately has the same sort of line weight variant architecture , but in theory Sienkiewicz culled his style mostly from the type of surface marks of Heinrich Kley and some compositional impressions from Fredric Gruger ,( user of the famed Wolf Pen ) . The reason there is a broad difference between the styles of Bill and Amano is the use of color and tenacity of “volumetric” control . Thats the difference between their styles and forms …volume. Amano’s forms are managed by pattern ..not volumetric lighting and or total recognition of form . Sooooo…i really doubt the influences of Amano on Sienkiewickz …no offense just clearing things up.

  4. the_dallas says:

^ Rarely do I read a comment and say, “What the Fuck is HE talking about?!?”

Sweet interview of Bill Sienkiewicz in CBR. He names Neal Adams as the G.O.A.T., but we already knew that.

  5. omegaSB says:

Neal Adams= Every Illustrators GOAT ……not Amano who is basically another Manga artist ….his style has been around since Galaxy Express 999…i mean come on its manga against full blown fine illustration

  6. the_dallas says:

Peep Amano’s gallery. That ain’t no damn manga. Are you saying that dude can’t get down? Stop the madness. I’ve got some original art from RoboTech that pwns some of the shit that passes for comic book illustration.

  7. omegaSB says:

Well im not trying to cause any ruckus…im just giving you quality fact and information . His art is considered manga ,(even though its in full color) mostly because of his distortion of the proportions of the human figure , its not a style thing its totally technical . There are certain titles given to certain “realms” of art not only due to their respective expressive and intimate features but also because of the solutions to how the picture plane and composition are composed. Proportional observation is a key element in Illustration and it is a somewhat major factor when it comes to how it takes lead in contemporary pieces.

  8. the_dallas says:

^ I appreciate your scholarship although I don’t agree with your assessment. Fantasy illustration has always been about the distortion of the human figure. Look at the boobs on Red Sonja. Amano’s work contains far too many details to fall into the description of Manga. That seems to be more of the American mindset of lumping an artist into the basket where a certain style may have originated from. I love Manga[ll] as well, and I have a Manga-influenced drop coming up later today.

    Stay tuned true believers.

Hands-down one of the best animes ever made and the keystone starting my obsession.

  10. coqui says:

amano is NOT manga. homeboy gets down with something ill either way though. Dallas, you got Sandman: The Dream Hunters? He did the art in that one, cop if you ain’t got, trust.

  11. the_dallas says:

Oh shit, I was just in this spot the other day and I seen the Sandman graphic novel. I will go up in that bitch[ll] the next time I visit that bookstore.
