SPANK WHAT YA’ MAMA GAVE YA’…

spank rock

The question came up the other day between RAFI and I who we could attach the blame to for hipster rap.

People that look to KanYe’s cousins like Kid Cudi or Spank Rock are very mistaken. Pharell and the N.E.R.D. movement were definitely in the house but the act that was onstage was Luther Campbell and the 2 Live Crew.

What group better describes the ethos of cheap beer and cheaper thrills all while wearing your Cazal frames and a trucker hat? The simple call and response lyrics and the booming bassline were Luke Skyywalker standards.

Did Luke turn the music industry on its ear so thoroughly that even now his name is only mentioned in hushed whispers? Someone been done need to have given that man his own reality show. Shit can’t possibly get worse than the jig nonsense that Flavor Flav in waist deep in. Deep waste I meant to say.

I have yet to catch a Spank Rock set but all the music reviewers claim he is the new millenium Luke show. If Spank Rock can get quiet girls to bring their inner freak out then I ain’t mad at him, but he is going to have to take his ass chants to another level if he wants to compete with Luke’s Federal indictments.

You know, a few months back XXL.com ran a small news story about Luke planning to IPO his company. A successful black entrepreneur making a big business move. That’s the kind of hip-hop story the magazine should be reporting on, not putting Rick motherfucking Ross on the cover and relegating Luke’s initial public offering (ahem) to a small piece on the site.

Sorry, nothing to do with your post. Just wanted to speak on it.

    whoop there it is….:)

you aint never lied D…..I actually lost an argument to my son when we discussing how much greater our generation of hip hop was/is over some of the ish coming out now…and thats all he had to say…whoop there it is…and the my defenses crumbled like Billary’s campaign.

i’m not even ashamed to claim that I’m no way up on any types of hipster hip hop. tried lissenin to that mazzi/ kd cudi beef and could not for the life of me understand where the value was. not even dissing, but i guess i’m way too old for that scene.

Cant even imagine losing an argument to my sons over this issue since I’ve been pump feeding them classics ranging from parliament/ fela kuti/ funkadelic to slick rick/ epmd/run-dmc an ’ems to mf doom/ jay-z an em’s from day effin uno. The worse it got was when my 11 year old told me 50 cent was his fave. Wasn’t mad, cause I likes fif too, really…but played him some classic b.i.g and jigga and now he’s reppin hova til the wheels fall off. Consensus is we all think kanye is goofy but hella talented with his last being a classic album. Good parentin is what I call it.

I actually saw Spankrock open for Garels Barkley a few years ago. That night was the first time I had ever even heard of him, but I gota to give dude props cuz he got down. I mean, when I first saw him I thought he was gay (dude is real flamboyant) but he’s real energetic and the ladies be going all out for him.

VH1 is actually putting together a Luke reality show as we speak…

  8. Geeflex says:

I think hipster rap was begat by the overlap of white hipsters and impressionable urban school kids in population centers of America since about 2G.

  9. I actually fucks with that “Day and Night” song Kid Cudi did, dammit.

I’m not quite sure why. But I do.

  10. the_dallas says:

    Ambassador,
Give me a few days to premiere my workout video to the Day & Night remix

Cudi is performing at a showcase tonite and they are offering an Obama to boot. I had to fall back though and Cudi id my nig. I don’t want to be at my day job constantly blotto. I may end up at my therapist for a stretch if this keeps up.

  11. We all need to stop worrying about hipster rap and whatever effects it may have and worry about shitty rap…Jim Jones, every shitty song w/a dance attached to it, et cetera. It’s like the last election where people forgot about the war and started to worry about dudes marrying dudes. Focus on the real problems.

Everyone always talks about Russell’s hustle but Luke was doing the same thing, just on the independent/regional level.

I will now step off my soapbox.

I don’t know when it started but I find myself sounding more and more like Sal standing behind the counter in a Bed-Stuy pizzeria on a hot day when it comes to most rap music.

^^^^^ thats to tru 40 most shit is weak, even from the vets^^^ a yo d you a freak cause only know freaks bout betty page whit her feaky ass..dam that must mean im i freak to!!!!

  14. khal says:

thats the funniest thing about “hipster rap”. lyrically, its the most banal shit out there. like, its not even that dude’s can’t rhyme, which they usually can’t, but most of the lyrics are no better than skrip club anthems.

    ^^CJ. ….you callin’ me a bad parent?

Nah, just saying my kids know the eff better than to try an test the God wit some “’90’s babies run 60/70’s babies off the map.” Especially when I’m drunk, and especially since they saw Yung Lip Gloss’ ethering a few months back. It’s the principalities my dude!!!!

  16. Lion XL says:

yo CJ….I feel you, I aint mad…truth is, it was more of shock that he was able to pull that out on me seeing as hes was like four when that ish dropped, and no it NEVER got play in my house

  17. Daruffian says:

Spank Rock has definitely stolen 2 Live’s crew entire steez. His last project was called Bangers and Cash and thje cover is exactly like 2 Live’s “As Nasty As They Wanna Be”. this kids has songs titled “Pussy” I can admit i tho, i saw him live and the bitches were mos def pussy poppin on a hand stand. but at the end of the day, instead of clling Luke Uncle, Lil Spanky should call him Dad.
