“Who Gives A Fuck About A Gotdamn Grammy?!?”

p.r.

I had no idea that the Grammys were being broadcast on Sunday night. I prah’lee would have watched the show. Maybe…

Incidentally I found myself re-watching ‘Purple Rain’ for about the fifty-eleventh time. ‘P.R.’ is a damn good movie. It could easily be on the top five lists for musical movies and Blaxploitation films and it is certainly up there for trendsetting 1980’s cinema.

A few years ago I went to the Brooklyn Academy of Music for a concert featuring SHARON JONES and the Dap Kings opening for MORRIS DAY and the Time with a screening of the director’s cut of ‘Purple Rain’ to follow the concert. The only thing that would have made the evening better would have been a cameo from his purple majesty. As it was there was a drunken purple thug in the back of the theatre cursing everyone out that wasn’t singing along.

So after I watched the film I peeped the companion DVD which had the production backstory of the film along with some concert footage. This was during the time when Prince was smashing out SHEILA E. How sick was Prince that he could make anything hot? He was a beast in the 1980’s. No one was writing better music than he was and certainly no one was performing better on stage[ll]. I haven’t caught a Prince concert yet so that is something for me to put on my list.

Speaking of concerts… Who is down to see the Roots and friends at the Apollo Theatre? I bought four(4) tickets for the show on Friday, February 22nd @ 7:30pm. 40 Diesel is gonna eff with it. Who else is down? Oh yeah, tickets are fifty cent and I’m not talking about the rapper.

Purple Rain is a GOAT flick and I think I’m one of the few who actually digs “Under The Cherry Moon”. Prince will always be that dude and probably the only Jehovah’s Witness I’d open the door for.

Regarding the Roots I think ?uestlove is a sanctimonious prick but a fine musician. The Roots will always remind me of my college years in Philly during the early 90’s when they were first starting out. I’ll be there rocking with DP causing a caramel commotion of hip-hopness [||]. And I’ll be draped in the finest of big man ‘Lo.

    CHEA!

Moms took me to see PR when I was about 7 years of age. I thought she was the coolest mom ever for that shit! Keep in mind she was like 40 when she had me. She gained major brownie points for that shit. That was my first taste of “sex” in a movie. I thought I was a “sex shoota, shootin up in somebody’s direction” after that.

Prince is a genius. Purple Rain is definitely a classic and deifnes the era.
Now I’m gonna have to go listen to Adore…..

And the Roots in concert are phenomenal.

The Grammy’s were better than usual, but as usual Kanghey Worst was overblown, corny as a three legged dog doing the Waltz and someone needs to tell him white plastic sunglasses are cool on the beach if you’re 4 years old. He basically ruined it, but he did try to bring tacky to a whole new level. Prince dissed Sinatra by saying he did not look bad for a cat that was 150 years old. Amy Winehouse shined and was real and you could feel her shock at winning. Alicia Keys ripped shit and Beyonce was well Beyonce and looked okay next to Tina Turner. Aretha returned from where she started, the church and outsang anybody in the whole 10 hour show. Ghey Z looked bored and boring and the rest was standard Grammy fare. Ernie

Purple Rain = perfect Saturday Afternoon Movie

There’s nothing like getting up as a kid and being able to watch 5 hours of cartoons, 1 hour of Soul Train and Second Generation, and then settling down to watch PR on ol’ WPIX Channel 11.

@40….that wouldn’t make him different from a bunch of cats that are/musicians or producers. I know a dude that used to work at SoundGarden. When ever you bought something he told you it was crap. His only recommendations were instrumental or something from the hills of rural Amsterdamn. Despite having enjoyed the times he spun and even wanting to use one of his beats, everytime I go I hope he’s not there so I don’t have to go through the motions.

I decided to peep that flick again in the near future because the Purple Rain bonus disk was just that good.

Did you just say “Second Generation”? That show with Andy Panda and Tony Morales of the Latin Rasclas playing Latin Hip Hop and Freestyle videos? That took me back. They used to air it in Boston on Channel 25.

    One.

^^Amadeo – LOL “hills of rural Amsterdam”. I totally understand. But I’ve met and chopped it up with really cool musical connoisseurs like Pete Rock and Bobbito. As long as you have some semblance of sense you can rap to these dudes. Somehow someone handed ?uestLove the keys to the “Authority of all Black Music of the Last 30 Years”, and where I don’t doubt his knollie, I don’t also prescribe to all his credentials. But alas like I said he’s still a great musician himself although he was responsible (along with Erykah Voo-Badu) for that Common brick of “Electric Circus”.

^Kingfish Penn – I actually think its a beautifully filmed movie and one of my all time fave movies in the Romance genre (which I think is about 4 films max). There is some severe [||] moments between Prince and Jerome Benton but otherwise I love it. Two moolies running loose on the Riviera living it up, and Prince throwing out that major game thats been a part of his baby making songwriting pimp shit for eons. Let me know what you think.

PS – “Graffiti Bridge” was one of the worst movies ever made and ranked in my top worst films I ever watched. Then I saw “State Property”.

Hey everyone, IS got a mad firewall on our computers at work. Really mad about that ish. Can’t post there where I spend most of my time on the Internet!

Purple Rain is a classic. Whenever a channel’s got that on, I’m chillin’. Takes me back. How I adored that short man (he looked taller in the movie, well with the boots and all). I have wondered for years where Lake Minnetonka was so he could come pick me up on his bike after I screamed “How could you did this to me!!” (just my imagination back then) Then we’d hop on the bike…you know the rest.

PR a classic. Under the Cherry Moon not so much for me…..

PR was good. Youve GOT to see Prince in concert though, man! How could you have missed that for so long? Hes fabulous!

In college I drove 2 hours in the snow to see Under the Cherry Moon, and I thought it sucked ass. Perhaps it wasnt as bad as it seemed. I might could watch it again just to be sure.

And you better save me a ticket for the Roots man – I love them too! First time I saw them in concert was in Amherst, MA, back in ’96 (yes, Im old). They put on a good show too.
