CAPTAIN BILLY SUNDAY’s PIRATE RADIO PODCAST

iPirate

This is the first annual Black Eye Boom Bap Posse Rap Cage Match here at DP Dot Com. Posse rap cuts are like the soundtracks that are created when rap music superstars form Voltron. These tracks are filled with all kinds of energy that moves at different speeds and attacks at disparate angles. Imagine watching the Avengers on the microphone, or the X-Men.

I love posse rap tracks because of the unity that is displayed. Their is a singular determination by every artist to murder the music with their mind. Lyrics find a new height and importance as everyone attempts to out work the previous poetry presenter. Pardon the excessive alliteration, but I am excited to give you these songs and I hope that you do the right thing by listening to them with your goggles on.

Homeboy pictured above caught a bad one on the ‘Simon Sez’ remix…

‘The Symphony’ – Juice Crew All-Stars (Masta Ace, Craig G, Kool G Rap and Big Daddy Kane)
I remember how many necks got snapped after G Rap dropped his verse. No one wanted it with that dude. Give Big Daddy Kane his props for even touching the microphone after G Rap.

‘The Headbanger’ – EPMD, K-Solo, Redman and Das EFX

‘Guerilla Monsoon Rap’ – Talib Kweli, Black Thought, Pharoe Monch

‘Flava In Your Ear'(remix) – Biggie Smalls, Craig Mack, Rampage, LL Cool J, and Busta Rhymes
Blowticious!

‘Left It To Us’ – Cage, El-P, Tame 1, Yak Ballz and Aesop Rock

‘Color Blind’ – Ice Cube, Kam, MC Threat, Coolio, WC and J-Dee

‘A Rollerskating Jam Called Saturday’ – Q-Tip, DeLa Soul, Vinia Mojica

‘Live At The BBQ’ – NaS, Fatal, Akinyele and Extra P
Read UnKut Dot Com for the Joe Fatal backstory on this legendary track.

‘4, 3, 2, 1’ – Method Man, Redman, Canibus, DMX and LL Cool J
There’s a reason this song is legendary. Canibus set this shit on fire. LL Cool J made sure that no major record label would ever fuck with him again. This track gets a two(2) black eye rating.

‘Simon Sez’ (remix) – Lady Luck, Pharoahe Monch, Redman, Method Man, Shabaam Shadeeq, and Busta Rhymes
This shit is so hardbody I’m giving it three(3) black eyes and three(3) retarded emcees rating. Everyone goes in deep. Busta Rhymes is without question one of the greatest posse rap track emcees of all time.

    Dopeness.

“Color Blind” is some insanely slept on shit that should get mentioned in the all time greats. Good looks Dallas.

Can we get a “play in match” of the Juice Crew? I’m talking the OG record “Juice Crew All-Stars (Oh My Goodness!)”, that while isn’t as lauded as “The Symphony”, still leaves steaming dung on most posse cuts, and shows how the Juice Crew was the original super collective…

  2. 40 says:

Unfortunately – the track up there for “Color Blind” is “Scenario (RMX)”

  3. Dart_Adams says:

Kid Hood continues to wreak havoc on Earth from beyond the grave! Hell of a list, too.

*Does the Steve Martin, Scooby Doo, Smurf and the Mike Tyson on my way out of the comment box*

  4. Karim says:

Scenario, original or remix dont rate shun? What about some of those Dungeon fam tracks?

  5. Karim says:

There is nothing on earth that can move a black man like some Super Ill, what the fuck did he say, man hol up, this nigga is sick, rewind that shit, he didnt just say that, im writing that down, im going to go write a rap, man who am i kidding, i cant fuck with these niggas fucking lyrics. cot damn shun.

  6. Lion XL says:

whoa…what no wu? they are kings of posse cuts…Triumph(ok..so that was predictable), Daytona 500, Pinky Ring, gravel Pitt? come on D…where the love?

  7. *points finger at 40 Diesel*
Blame that dude for no Wu bangers!

In an earlier thread 40 argues that Wu Tang is a collective moreso than individual artist groups so they should be disqualified from posse rap track status.

Pardon me for fucking up the code to color blind. I will try to change it from my Blackberry now. That shit is a great track and deserves GOAT status consideration.

Lastly, Dungeon Family has collective status along with the Wu. If someone wants to lobby on their behalf please step into the arena.

    Dart? Help them out brother.

  8. Karim says:

ok bruh, im here. the dungeon consisted of two groups kast, goodie plus witch doc, cool breeze, calhoun, and Killer mike was on some of those., rube, badu was on one of the illest too. They were under one flag for the most part, but it seems to me that if Juice crew (which i will never question, Bed stuy stand up) make it, then Dungeon qualifies, no?

  9. Casey says:

Simon Says Remix is my GOAT posse track…Lady Luck is the only flub imo. Only other joints I’d add are LL’s I Shot Ya Remix and the obscure posse cut Rumble In the Jungle by ATCQ, Fugees, and Busta (of course) off the soundtrack to that Ali documentary. I can up that if you need btw.

  10. Nonchalant Misfit says:

DON’T CURSE by Heavy D feat. G Rap, Kane, CL Smooth, Puba, Tip, Pete Rock…!

How could you forget…? That’s one of the illest…! Pure, unbridled spontaneity & energy…mad slept on, duke.

  11. Don’t curse is def a banger. That Booker T sample is classic. Get some of that Ice Cube joint now.

  12. spider says:

What about “Pass the 40” with Black Sheep, Chi Ali, Hot Diggity Dog and Dave Gossett, the A&R man, if for nothing else an example of the antithesis of posse cuts?

  13. Nonchalant Misfit says:

    yeah, “Hip Hug-ger” by Booker T. & The M.G.’s

O’Shea used that for “Givin’ Up The Nappy Dug Out”, albeit not a posse cut, still a classic song from the same classic album that has “Color Blind” on it

  14. Eloheem * says:

    Dope!

  15. Grand Master says:

Ay Dallas, as the man in the place to be, what’s your take on the fake counterfeiters that LV had in front of the Brooklyn Museum? I don’t know whether to think Louis is being slick and kind of subversive, or just kind of assholic to those who can’t afford the real and buy the Chinatown joints.

  16. Tony says:

Awesome mix, I hate to admit there are some tracks in there I had not heard before . . . The Posse Track could be one of the greatest gifts ever given to us by hip-hop right up there with the freedom rock drum solo and the 10 minute plus Steven Vai guitar solo.

  17. Tony says:

Okay, just finished listening to my faves from the podcast one more time . . .

THANK YOU DALLAS for reminding me how damn good Color blind and headbanger were . . . I’ve gotta go thru my cassette singles now because I’m sure I have these around the house somewhere.

    Talk about old school.

    Nice work!!!

  18. the_dallas says:

    TKC,
    What up?

    GrandMaster,
    What a hump I am!?!

I should have made an attempt to get inside especially when I saw the hypebeasts going in. It was a circus of television news cameras and people protesting Bruce Ratner(the developer for the new Atlantic Yards project). By the time the Louis Vuitton mock street vendors had blown through I was prah’lee upstairs with C.S. watching the ‘Batman Beyond’ cartoon movie.

I think Louis Vuitton is part of the movement that exploits poor people at every possible chance. They exploited poor peoples swagger and style and desire to wear our wealth on our back, or on our handbags as it were. LV was also one of the corporations that supported the mayor’s drive to raid Chinatown. It’s not like an action like this will stop counterfeit bags from being made or sold(in Chinatown AND the upper East Side I might add), but now these items will cost more. Who does this hurt? Lastly, Louis Vuitton’s corporate name is LVMH, with the MH standing for Moet Hennessy. Two brands of piss water that poor people swear by. Fuck LVMH in the A.

If ‘Ye Tudda did perform then he and Jay-Z were the only Blacks in attendance.

  19. big rils says:

Rap Phenomenon – Biggie, Red, Meth?

  20. Dart_Adams says:

I would say that “Black Ice” and “Watch For The Hook” should most def be included as some of the greatest posse jams of all time.

Get Slump From Da Funk From Da Dungeon, Young One © Graffiti from the wall of the Dungeon Family’s original studio as seen in The Source.

    One.

  21. Lion XL says:

Countdown by the DEF SQUAD. E-Duble, Redman, KiethMurray and Jamal(way underated)

Which is gretaer Hit Squad or the Def Squad?

  22. thoreauly77 says:

has anyone mentioned “The Anthem” from the Sway and Tech album “This or That”? The song features RZA, Tech Nine, Eminem, Xzibit, Pharoahe Monche, Kool G Rap, Jayo Felony, Chino XL, and the almighty KRS-One.
The song is fucking sick; the emcees spit over the “Unspoken Word” beat off of the Bobby Digital album, then at the end Tech flips it to (I think) “The Bridge is Over” beat for Kris’ verse.

I could you up if you need it Billy.

  23. Jaislayer says:

Good work Billy and 40. I still bump these tracks today, kids be looking at me all crazy and shit, but whatever they ain’t ready for this type of shit. Here are some honorable mentions:

Leflaur Leflah Eshkosh – Fab 5 (Boot Camp Collective)

I Shot Ya – LL, Prodigy, Fat Joe, Foxy Brown

Westside Slaughterhouse – Ice Cube, Mack 10, WC

DWYCK – Gangstarr and Nice and Smooth (I’ve seen alot of people get their ass kicked to this joint at the Tunnel back in the days)

  24. @thoreaully: I forgot all about The Anthem. Thanks for the reminder.
