RALPH BAKSHI IN NEW YORK CITY…

bakshi

I think I would call RALPH BAKSHI my favorite filmmaker even above GEORGE LUCAS. Mostly because of the movie he created called ‘Streetfight’ also known as ‘Coonskin’. This film was made during the height of the blaxploitation movie era and it speaks to the Black man’s struggles here in AmeriKKKa more than any movie ever.

‘StreetFight’ is the antithesis of D.W. Griffith’s ‘Birth Of A Nation’. As a matter of fact, I believe I read somewhere that BAKSHI created ‘Streetfight’ as a response to that supremacist propaganda.

I’m on some super geek shit that BAKSHI will be in NYC this weekend and he will be screening his film ‘Streetfight’ on Saturday night. This is some must see shit that I hope you can all make it to. When I look at the influences that made me the writer that I am today I definitely have to give props to BAKSHI. He speaks a truth to power that should have gotten him blacklisted or worse years ago.

Rarely in life do you have the chance the thank your heroes for their influence and inspiration to your art and life. Don’t mind me because I will be on some real fanboy ish Thursday night.

You fucking Stan…I understand though…let Sade walk in and I’ll be fighting my inner groupie.

Oh Snap! Best onscreen trio EVAR! Scatman Crouthers, Barry White, and Philip Michael Thomas. You cant beat that with a bat.

The title sequence is still incredible to me. Just that static shot with Scatman throwin down. Proof that wild camera tricks, sfx, big actors etc, dont mean shit without talent, charisma AND presence

I most definitely am gonna try and do that double feature. never seen Heavy Traffic

What up Dallas? I never heard of Ralph Bakshi, I will have to check out that flick. I’m in the NYC this week doing some work this week. Hope I’m not working to late on Saturday. Is anything else jumping off this week. I know how you are always talking about Tuesday being that night. Where are the Obamas this week? Peace.

Tomorrow night is a joint with Giant Step in the Lower East Side at a spot called Rehab(25 Ave B). True story is that spot used to called ‘Save The Robots’. I can’t even begin to tell you all of my drug and alcohol related stories inside that spot. Years later it is where the Ubiquita parties were hosted.

There’s an Obama on Thursday nite after the Bakshi book signing. That should be flavor because it is at one of my favorite sneaker shops. Hit me up if you are in NYC.

“Save The Robots…” definitely remember that spot, B! Big ups D for recognizing the George Lucas of animation – Mr. Ralph Bakshi. Bakshi was a key of fish scale in his day and definitely turned my young ass out with ill subject matter –see Fritz The Cat– and visually arresting animation. That Lord Of The Rings shit –pre-CGI– back in the 70s no doubt had a young Peter Jackson cumming in his pants and thinking of the day he too would catch celluloid wreck! Thanks for putting me on, baby. I’ll definitely be at Thursday’s or Saturday’s jump-off.
