BOOM BAP ALMOST KILLED BY WHAM! RAP…

wham

I fux with Wham! [ll]

I fux with the 1980’s pop group and I fux with George Michael [ll].

Back in the early 1980’s when record companies were still trying to figure out what to do with rap music several rock and pop music groups had taken their turns putting out rap songs. My favorite joint is called ‘This Is Radio Clash’ from the punk rock band The Clash.

There is also Blondie’s undeniable ‘Rapture’ which namedropped Hip-Hop stars Grandmaster Flash and Fab 5 Freddy who would later become Hip-Hop icons.

But there is another rap song from the British pop music duo Wham! that could have entirely derailed the rap music movement forever if kids started thinking that you had to wear tight leather jackets and skinny jeans just to be a fashionable rap star.

Lucky for us that didn’t happen.

    I hear you, fam.

‘Rock The Casbah’ Is my shit.

Young cats don’t know about the days when rap wasn’t so widespread that you didn’t have time to fux with other shit.

I was just bumping ‘Owner of a lonely heart’ by Yes earlier today.

    Yo….

only the BRAVEST “out” dudes would rock those “frankie says” t shirts in that era…..or the chicks that were on that “different” vibe…

every one else was stuck on lees and le tigres if I’m remembering that year correctly……….

that’s the “everybody wants to rule the world” era…..right?

  7. getthesenets says:

The Aha video was THE ILLEST video……….

the way they did it, it still looks cool today….

    no doubt….

the version of this song that they used to play on the late night hip hop shows was ill………had the driving guitar and the snippets of the song cut in there….sort of like a dub version of the song…

    maybe the 12 inch

    I agree with Tony Grands,

Can’t stand in the way of progress, but I think hip hop was better when it wasn’t as widely seen/accepted.

I remember when a rapper was on tv ….you’d run and call your people….yo,rundmc is on channel 7 .

appreciated it more…..had to stay up late to even hear it on the radio on weekends..

  17. Elijah says:

Yo, the craziest thing about that Wham! song is that I barely remember it, and was all geared up for it to be absolutely terrible–but for 1982, that’s not even close to the worst rapping I’ve heard. Hilarious, yes, and it ain’t exactly T La Rock, but it didn’t make my ears bleed with its whiteness.

  18. BIGNAT says:

oh my god when i was working at that big old navy down on 33rd. they played that kind of music all day. i am not going lie eventually i started liking it like grands put ‘Rock The Casbah’. also that bob marley rainbow techno mix that joint was crazy. the thing with music like that it gets people dancing even if they don’t like it.

  19. FrankTruth says:

    [||] your “rainbow techno mix…)

  20. BIGNAT says:

frank if you don’t know the song then shut up it’s called rainbow.
