I don’t know why more people aren’t talking about the Sherlock Holmes flick? Director GUY RITCHIE merc’ks this joint. Robert Downey Jr. continues his white hot streak. Jude Law is on some high level co-star shit. The movie just deserves a lot more acclaim.
Ritchie has made some indie cult classic shit with a relative ‘zero’ budget in Hollywood terms so the jury was undecided on whether or not he could craft a flick with the mass appeal. I think this is his best film to date. All the elements that have made Ritchie’s films so damn entertaining are contained in Sherlock Holmes.
Wordplay. Ritchie’s writers are surgical with the pen when it comes to the details. Downey Jr. and Law’s rapport is classic English gentlemen wry wit. I’m not talking about some staid plaid and tweed tee-totaling bullshit either. These two characters go inside and outside of the law to get it done. The action sequences have Ritchie’s trademark slow-stop-motion close up karate chop leg breaking efficiency. I wish Ritchie were directing the action sequences for the new Batman films because his style is that good.
Fux the hyperbole! Go see Sherlock Holmes and if you tell me that shit ain’t tha’ sheet I will refund your ticket.
*fingers crossed behind back
white hot streak

Yo…that is one I haven’t seen yet. I’ve been wanting to, but just keep forgetting. I gotta peep it and Legion.
“I don’t know why more people aren’t talking about the Sherlock Holmes flick”
Avatar
I might see this when I got see Benicio Del Toro as THE Wolfman.
You gotta pick up the “L magazine” and read what they say about the AMC25 in times square and how it’s THE spot for unauthorized double features. I been doing that shit for years.
Once again I will nominate Benicio Del Toro to play in the next Batman movie as Clayface
I’m a big Sherlock Holmes fan, and it’s interesting Downey is the star because in a few of the original Arthur Conan Doyle stories, Holmes does cocaine: no lie, and it wasn’t even illegal then.
Also, the last Inspectah Deck mixtape/street album (whatever) wasn’t GREAT but had some great moments and it was called …
THE RESIDENT PATIENT
which I’m 99.7% sure is a Holmes reference, since the story is “Adventure of The Resident Patient.”
In an often anti-literate scene, I thought that Deck was cool as shit for coming up with that title. Compare to GZA, who can be an excellent writer yet calls an album fucking “Pro Tools,” which unless he was getting computer program sponsorship $$$ is wack as… “Blueprint THREE”?
guy’s best movie was revolver that joint was smart and very violent. sherlock holmes is a good but it’s not touching revolver. check the cast man
Jason Statham
Ray Liotta
Vincent Pastore a.k.a big pussy from the sopranos
André Benjamin a.k.a andre 3000 a.k.a. 3 stacks
Wayne, Dedication 3 > ___________
I went and saw this first weekend.
I blogged it immediately upon arrival to the house.
Alas, not many people read me, but that is another story for another time. Long story short, I LOVED this fuckin movie and have been thinking hard about when I will be going to see it again, as well as singing its praises to anyone who would listen.
Didn’t love Sherlock Holmes, despite enjoying Guy Ritchie and Robert Downey, Jr apart from this. It was just meh to me. The action just didn’t suit the era if that makes sense.
Word, I couldn’t wait for this to come out and I haven’t even seen it yet.. Funny you post it today ’cause I thought about going tonight but college and the NBA got me at the crib…”alright Tip, maybe Ta-moro”
Iron MAN goes in on this one.
BIGNAT you speak the truth. Revolver was a masterpiece and one of my favorite movies of all time. too bad it went over most people’s heads and bad reviews caused people to sleep on it.
Guy Ritchie is a beast and his movies are the dopest dope i can shove into my eyes.
Snatch and lock stock are two classics that revolutionized the crime genre. I wish that more people had seen his movie RocknRolla because that film deserved sequels
yo dp i don’t know what movie you was watching but this one was straight up garbage. they should have got the wayans bro’s to play the leads and have mcg direct, that movie would have been amazing.
p.s. i’m just fuckin around, this movie was awesome and i hate robert downey jr.
Yo dallas wass good wit da fred foxxx decept beatdown? Holla at me fam! D4life!
Me, the misses, Ma Dukes seen it at the show (movies to those not hip) and it was one of Guy Ritchie’s next to Snatch, hell my new aparatus is the new Sherlock style smoking pipe, and oh yeah Dallas they are making a sequel despite being over shadowed by Avatar it already has a cult following.
Ritchie should gave Terrance Howard a cameo.
“Whadup, Sherlock Mayne…”
@kid10705
Yeah man, that’s the only thing that’s given me pause about this flick, the potential for kinda meh anachronistic action sequences…because I am down like James Brown for the rest of the package. I think it would be ill to do a Victorian violent movie with as much REALISM in the violence as possible, ie bone-crunching beatdowns, blades, and bullets only…plus a realistic poisoning scene and a fucked-up garrote.
“I am down like James Brown for the rest of the package. ”
Whoa, son. . . .

I saw the Sherlock movie on Xmas day, blunted like a mufukka….check it out if you haven’t already…(II)…
@PG yeah man revolver alot of people slept on then after i keep telling them to watch it. when they do they love the joint. same thing with snatch how can you not like that movie. RocknRolla another real good movie you seen layer cake? it makes me think why do most of the movies i really like don’t do good at box office. it’s because when you do a movie right the Average person hates it. when you make it big and flashy with a shitty story people love it thats right muthafuckers go see avatar again. i guess movies can relate relate to rap music you want to make a hit. or you want to make something worthwhile that might not appeal to all but has substance. also green street hooligans is a must see the only movie elijah wood is in that i can stand. i like sin city just because he dies in it mwhahahhahaha. Jason Statham plays in alot of movies i like but i don’t really like him as a actor. he is in chaos, bank job, snatch, revolver and alot of other films that are good. whoever his agent is be hooking him up. another film that is very good pan’s labyrinth i was shocked at how good it was.
I just watched this on the strength of you review and I dunno DP. The movie was aiiight but its not Ritchie’s best to date by a long shot.
LS2SB, Snatch, RocknRolla> Sherlock Holmes.
The performances are great, but the dialogue isn’t better than any of the aforementioned movies.
I also hate how the movie is basically a setup for the sequel in which they go after the real villain: Moriarty
The movie isn’t a setup for only a sequel. The movie is a setup for a franchise – Bond stylee. In ten years there will be another dude portraying Sherlock Holmes but Ritchie will still be behind the lens.
Everything else you just mentioned was a one off. Ritchie is gonna have fools working for years off the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle character. How real is that?
Guy Ritchie’s career can only get better after dropping that ol’ ass one eyed slut Luisse Ciccone!! A lot of ppl been bitting his directing style here in the States since he dropped Lock Stock…I’m still waiting on the Rock N Rolla sequel…Good post DP…
Food for thought, I’m a sports guy, I’m curious to see who everybody is rooting for in the studio(NO HOMO).. Such as, My man Harold Reynolds, Gus Johnson, Jalen Rose, Greg Anthony, John Kruk, Sir Charles, Kenny the Jet, Keith Hernandez, etc etc…that’s what I want to know, good lookin’!
I am a RDJ fan and he was great in this. I think Avatar just killed any discussion of this movie. Snatch is my favorite Guy Ritchie movie to date.
Damn right! This Movie i just great. And I Love The Butch Cassidy and sundance Kid reference…. one of my alltime favorites…. Check The Clou, too 😉
… an btw since there is a infinte amount of sherlock holmes stories available I think you are right about your assumption, that there will be many sequels
Definitely a good movie. But was Sherlock really like how he was portrayed in the movie. It did fit well though
