The Most Hip-Hop Cities…

#4 Newark (NJ)
#5 Oakland (CA)
#6 Kansas City (MO)
#7 (tie) Cleveland (OH)
#7 (tie) Washington, DC

#10 Memphis (TN)
#11 Cincinnati (OH)
#12 Atlanta (GA)
#13 Tulsa (OK)
#14 Miami (FL)
#15 Chicago (IL)
#16 Houston (TX)
#17 Dallas (TX)
#18 Pittsburgh (PA)
#19 Milwaukee (WI)
#20 Louisville (KY)
#21 Nashville (TN)
#22 Long Beach (CA)
#23 Oklahoma City (OK)
#24 Santa Ana (CA)
#25 Jacksonville (FL)

A few notes on the list above…

We’ll all just assume that Flint, Michigan is considered part of Detroit.
California places three(3) entries. Good job Schwarzenegger.
Columbus, Dayton and Toledo are not on the list. Ohio must be getting better.
Missouri is TOO small to place two(2) cities on the list.
Now you see why New York rap has been in the shitter.

  1. Thats crazy, Cincinnati? Cant blame Schwarzenegger, the sheer size of Cali coupled with the weather suggests he is not doing too bad. Lofl

  2. Embry says:

In the words of Camron: Youngstown, Cleveland, Dayton, Cincinnati! But to keep it real I’m amazed Dayton is not on the list as they only have about 30 cops and over a million citizens and I don’t even live in the states anymore.

P.S. shout to Dallas for postin the Pete Rose Pic on your site, that’s a good pic representing my city and my favorite Baseball player. And congrates on you new iHipHop gig mate.

  3. VEe! says:

I used to get it in (OH) – Cam’ron

“NY ain’t been the same, since Snoop came through and crushed the buildings” – Jay

Detroit has been going crazy since the last quarter of 2008.

I guess we know where the next gangsta-gangsta rappers will be coming from.

  4. DirtyJerz says:

You mean to tell me Camden aint on that f*cker? I demand a recount on the bodies!

Word is Bawn! In order for New York to get their gullypoints up, they need to create an HBO series like the The Wire. When I lived in Chicago, my cop neighbor told me when The Wire series was on and poppin’, they would have to double up on the manpower on Sundays after 10:00 PM to deal with cats acting out.

Detroit is the one city that needs no resume. People just know.

  5. Brahsef says:

Michigan just puts other states to shame (if that’s the right word). Detroit, Flint, and how could you forget Saginaw. Cities that have

  6. the_dallas says:

Camden and Flint not being on this list makes sense. Its not like these cities had an unlimited amount of poor people to keep killing each other? They were bound to run out

  7. Brahsef says:

Michigan just puts other states to shame (if that’s the right word). Detroit, Flint, and how could you for forget Saginaw. Cities that have

  8. Brahsef says:

Shit ain’t postin for me right lol. For some reason it’s cuttin out half my post each time. Your site got a BS meter Dallas and I passed it?

  9. the_dallas says:

I can’t call it Brahsef but you are right about Michigan in general. East Lansing is also fucked the fuck up.

  10. DirtyJerz says:

I’m just hearing on news that Detroit is closing approx. 50 schools within the next 5 years!?!?!?

It’s really not a movie for them. They are officially on some “I Am Legend” sh*t .

  11. Smear says:

Camden, Gary, PGC (or does that count as DC)…. Richmond?
    Detroit and B’more stay losing…smh

  12. Smear says:

    These per capita stats?

Camden and Flint not being on this list makes sense. Its not like these cities had an unlimited amount of poor people to keep killing each other? They were bound to run out

    *dead*

  13. My city (Los Angeles) is teh ghey these days. If tight pants, double lip-rings & temple tattoos were being judged, we be #1 with a nerf bullet.

I been here all my life, in various sections, & it’s never been such a magntude of metrosexual confusionism. I’m glad were not on this list, but damn.

For those that don’t know, LB & The Town (Oakland) deserve those spots.

  14. 1969 says:

LMAO @ Camden. For real though….living in Philly and having to be in Pittsburg twice a months has been eye opening. Pennsylvania has a fine mix of the Amish and Murderers…who knew?

  15. & Santa Ana? Man, the Mexican gangsters out there are putting home made bombs on off duty gang unit undercover cars. 3 last week alone. That should give y’all an idea of the sheer ball size them dudes are working with.

  16. F says:

Ugh. Whenever I travel outside of KC, someone always has the nerve to ask me ‘how the farms and cows are’ here. They’re fine, but they will shoot your ass clean off.

I’m truly embarrassed that KC is as high as we are, but it’s to be expected given our last 10 years or so. We’re still behind the number of murders from last year, so I guess that’s a start.

  17. Smear says:

“We’re not in Kansas anymore Todo”
“so I can take this damn vest off?

  18. the_dallas says:

True stills is that wherever you are it could be on and popping. These stats that the FBI uses to arrive at their list is debatable. Stats don’t lie that’s why liars use statistics. These cities could be lined up for questionabvle law enforcement experiments and no one would question them since the city is on the worst list.

All that matters is that one time tho’. Ray Barnett, my co-worker that was killed at his side gig will not receiv e any justice. His killer was acquitted earlier this year. Some Italian kid who was prA’li listening to rap when he pulled the trigger.

  19. Amadeo says:

For real, I’m pretty sure they still massage the stats here in Bmore. We been in the top 5 way to long. If you ever want to see background on our Citypaper does a weekly tally and provides updates on previous killings:

    http://www.citypaper.com/news/story.asp?id=19952

  20. VEe! says:

Amadeo, not for nothing, B-More is sad.

Eventually cats are going to have to protect, police and support their own communities.

  21. Amadeo says:

Eventually…we needed to start 5 years ago. To match us in the ranking a place like NY would need to have thousands of people murdered every year….and we probably have about or a little more than 500,000 residents in the city.

  22. Smell Deez says:

da burgh #18, i just saw trey, jeezy, and jay on the bp3 tour. tore shit down last night in the hill district pittsburgh pa . shit was wild, jay has so many hits its crazy… really knows what time it is. jeezy banged, but is still learning how to be an entertainer and shit, hes g’d up. running out breathe, not singin the chorus. only doing 1 minute snippets of his classic TM101 songs, he got that shit bumpin tho’. thanks 2 trey for bringin out all those styling and profiling hood rats 2 the show…

  23. kiana says:

Maybe I’m in denial because I’ve been here my whole life but that Long Beach over LA listing surprises the hell out of me. I’m not saying Long Beach aint bad but the city is so damn big the stats are misleading. One min LBC can look hella beverly hill-ish, turn a corner, and well, it’s bad, but #22 bad? I don’t know about that.

Oh and as easy as it is to point a finger at the governator. Some of these local officials are extra horrible. The Mayor of LA was on a fucking soap opera a couple of weeks ago, claiming to promote jobs but he was really trying to get his shine on.

  24. Dniro says:

Man I grew up n saginaw and I lived n flint for about 4yrs…those places for bein little towns ain’t no joke….I’ve lived in Austin,Tx for some years now and laugh when people talk about being from the hood here….fools couldn’t couldn’t comprehend the madness that is Michigan….and they’re still laying off cops…

  25. Enigmatik says:

    yet again…

    Houston, TX > Dallas, TX

    ‘chea.

  26. Fosterakahunter says:

Yeah, starting with Giuliani, the politicians cleaned up your town to the point where even the NY rap anthems sound soft as hell. Case in point, the Jay-Z/Alicia Keys song. Sean P will save the day, though.

  27. give T.O. a 1mill 1 year contract says:

Do these stats mean hip-hop softened cause New York did? new york may not be as high up on this list as it was, but could it be because people just aint snitchin as much…?

  28. GM FUCKED DETROIT THE FUCK UP says:

WILL THE MINDSET OF IT BEING WHATS GOOD THAT YOUR CITY IS TOP ON THE LIST EVER LEAVE? IS IT UP TO HIP-HOP TO HELP DESTROY WHAT IT CREATED? that being said, how many of these cities have large hip-hop movements or above the radar rappers? thats a real question. i havent figured it out myself yet

  29. Tiffany says:

Funny thing about Milwaukee is the city is small. Milwaukee gets the criminals from Chicago and the criminals here run there. Revolving door. Murder rate has dropped in the last several years. We have averaged 100 but last year I believe it was less than that.

  30. Smear says:

Yeah, starting with Giuliani, the politicians cleaned up your town to the point where even the NY rap anthems sound soft as hell. Case in point, the Jay-Z/Alicia Keys song. Sean P will save the day, though.
    ^^^
    P!

  31. I wasn’t expecting my city (Baltimore) to be #2. I knew it was going to be top 10 tho. It doesn’t feel that fucked up down here. Then again they do rob buses and shit. So I guess that’s accurate.

  32. Phlip says:

Is this list being made based on total number (quantity) or per-capita (quality)?
If not the former, I can’t imagine why Jacksonville FL is on the list what with being the largest city in the country. If some other statistics are to be believed, then I find it hard to imagine why Fayetteville and Winston-Salem NC are not on the list. It’s not all tobacco and cotton down here.

  33. the_dallas says:

    Philip,
I saw the breakdown yrs ago and it is a PER CAPITA formula. NYC would still place for its sheer size but when you consider violent incidents per overall populace NYC ends up being less hardbody.

Don’t get it twisted tho’, Meyhem and I were just talking and I didn’t realize that Brownsville has over 100K people living in that neighborhood and East New York is a little less. NYC has neighborhoods of poor folks adjoining one another that are equal in number to some of these “cities”.
