Son, I saw this as a kid and it was the most bizarre sh*t I’d ever seen, and not in a good way.

Sup Dallas? Haven’t been here in a while but I read some stuff from time to time. Caligula was written for those people who know the history of the Augustan royal family and the culture of Rome at the time. Most people who dont study the “classics” in college dont understand the humor of the movie. Its a modern retelling of stories about the royal family of the Julian clan that have existed since ancient Rome and were written about by ancient Roman reporters/historians. These stories can all be found in plutarch and polybius and writers like those but if you dont wanna do the background reading to understand the movie just watch the pbs special “I,Claudius”. It has all the same stories about Caligula in it plus the origin of the Augustan/Julian clan. peace.

Thanks for that comment. Yeah, I’m not gonna do anymore knowledge to the story. If you had seen the movie you would understand why.

Sup Dallas? Yeah I saw that movie when I was a kid. Watched it recently as well, maybe about 3 months before this post. The Augustan/Julian royal family or rather clan was the first to eradicate the democracy of the Roman senate and create the title of emperor and to rule by succession or bloodline instead of by election. This monarchy was so hated by the people of Rome that the writings about them were very unfavourable at times by the reporters/historians of the day and what we have left 2000 years later are some accounts reflecting very badly on them and their behavior(namely by Livy). Many historians believe that the accounts are tall tales and/or very exagerated and maybe unbelievable at times, but this is what we are left with. The humor of Caligula is that what Livy wrote about was brought to screen not only with this movie but more in depth with the pbs classic “I,Claudius” and If you remember Caligula you will also remember Claudius(his older brother) comes to power after Caligula is killed both by the will of the Royal Roman Guard. I hope you do check out “I,Claudius” because it is a true masterpiece and thorough rendering of the history of the Augustan/Julian clans history and family tree which extends until the rule of Claudius’ adopted son Nero. If you love murder, sex, betrayal and mafia movies this pbs series is for you. peace.

  7. Lmao @ the fragile justification for a film depicting creepjobs that fist horses and whatnots, that ain’t royalty by any means.
