‘Aspirational Apparel’

The big homey Jesse Thorn (The Sound Of Young America, Bullseye and in general a guy who FUX with me) asked me what I knew about Polo Ralph Lauren collectors. What?!?

The concept behind the ‘Aspirational Apparel’ phrase I have been using is that Polo Ralph Lauren allows me to imagine myself to be gentile, monied, well-traveled and accomplished. This is the MAIN attraction for everyone who wears Polo RL. Everyone. It gives the wearer a level of class sensibility. Growing up in a blue collar community, wearing Polo RL gave you a white collar when you Put This On.

I was meaning to ask ya’ll this. What moment did ya’ll feel Ralph eclipsed Hilfiger and left him in the dust? I say around 96/97 was the beginning of the end.

Dope vid Dallas. I thought Lo Lifes was a crew and Decepts were a street gang.

nice work DP!! funny shit how my man couldn’t wrap his brain around putting your tie on full-on stunt mode & having to be a warrior to wear certain pieces.

    BrickCity,
Yeah it was prA’li the mid to late 1990s when PRL really eclipsed all of the comp (Tommy, Nauti even Donna Karan) because they just couldn’t match the designs, details and the marketing acumen. These brands were all faking a lifestyle that Polo seemed to be really living in.

    Uni,
I will NEVER call Decept a ‘street gang’. That term minimizes their importance an d the meaning of brotherhood, Allow me the term ‘youth collective’.

It’s funny how long we been talking this talk here on this page to finally get some small acclaim for the ‘livestyle’ (I see you ‘Spekt) we’ve lived since we started doing it. It doesn’t stop tho’ and I’ma keep building with folks until we can put this thing on the proper stage.

    Thanks Internets

Hilfiger took top talent from Polo and turned Hilfiger into what CHAPS should have been.

Dallas: Your storage method must be crazy! Not to mention any fees. 1,000 pieces? I don’t build prison houses, so I keep only the Polo I’m rocking for the time being. Anything old or no longer in use is donated to those willing to accept it. You need to write a book on Polo and have proper flicks of your items.

    Uni,
When I say 1000 pieces I’m not talking about a rack of POWER pieces, but I’m talking about everything I own from shirts, pants, coats, jackets, hats, scarves, silks, tee, boxers, ties, socks, Steiff bears, water bottles, coffee cups and even two leather wrapped flasks.

    From 1986 ’til today

(I just copped 4 I.T.’s in Atlanta too)

Dallas: I know it ain’t 1,000 indian head type items. That’s still a tough collection. Even if you count a pair of socks as 2 items, it’s a lot of gear.

I once knew a dude who had 100 cats hanging out in front of his ground level apartment. DO YOU KNOW WHAT A FUCKING 100 CATS LOOKS LIKE!? Dude kept a pail of water next to his door and would have to splash a walkway just to leave the crib. My point is whether it’s a 100 cats or 1,000 Lo pieces, an abundance of anything can be a heavy burden.
