VH-1: Not All Crap

Just when I am ready to throw Viacom Corp. under the bus, they produce a program that is the highlight for my entire year…

Approaching it’s third annual broadcast, the VH-1 Hip-Hop Honors might be the greatest Hip-Hip program ever produced. The formula of featuring new emerging talent along with honored performers has made it the one show that hasn’t reduced rap music to minstrelsy and cornball posturing. I admit that the hosting can get better, but who can argue with the talent that has been on display since their first broadcast? If you just arrived in America from say, Nebraska, and you wanted to know what Hip-Hop music was about then the Hip-Hop Honors program is your 101 class.

Past honorees have included Public Enemy, KRS-1, Grandmaster Flash, LL Cool J, Tupac, Notorious B.I.G., Kool Herc, Salt-n-Pepa, RUN D.M.C., and Ice motherfuckin’ Tee. This years’ show looks like it’s going to be the best one yet with LIL’KIM honoring MC LYTE. ICE CUBE, WU-TANG, RAKIM, EAZY-E, the BEASTIE BOYS and the great AFRIKA BAMBAATA are all being honored and/or performing as well as DIDDY, LIL’ JON, FAT JOE, REMY MA, YOUNG JEEZY, XZIBIT, COMMON and Q-TIP. I smell a DILLA tribute inside of this program that you don’t want to miss. Even my funky uncle, GEORGE CLINTON is scheduled to perform.

Forget a BET Awards or a VMA, what you really want to watch is VH-1’s Hip-Hop Honors premiering Tuesday, October 17. And starting on Friday, September 15, VSPOT, VH-1’s broadband channel will launch a dedicated Hip Hop channel with extensive on-demand music playlists from this year’s “VH-1 Hip-Hop Honors” honorees. The channel will be programmed with additional content throughout September and October and will include honoree profiles and exclusive programming and performances from the on-air broadcast of the show.

I can’t front VH1 has put on some good Hip-Hop related programming. See what happens when your marketing isn’t set up for young people.

Last years HHH was pretty hot, but put that aside and VH1 is pure garbage. I still think we should campaign to have it renamed to the coon channel. Every time I flip past it, I see Flavor Flav or one of those nasty grimy heffers(sp?) makin the rest us look foolish.

Do you know that one of those nasty grimy heffers are getting thier own show? So now they can hook up with some nasty grimy nukka and produce some nasty grimy coon babies?

ps. I hope nobody finds my liberal use of the word coon offensive, but thats the only word that I feel perfectly describes these fools, cuz they are way past being just nukkas.

^LION XL, that’s my point. VH-1 is almost all crap except when they produce this show which might be the best Hip-Hop themed program that is televised for the ENTIRE year on any network.

Is this show enough to mitigate me to watch some other VH-1 programming? Prah’lee so.

Will I be pissed off at VH-1 after watching Flavor of Love or some other show they broadcast that has the African American characters shucking and jiving? Yes.

And I will stay pissed off until the Hip-Hop Honors show comes on again.

I will wait patiently until some brave communist inevitably makes it availble on youtube.

of course this could never be on mtv or bet. a lot of these kids have no idea who the honorees are.

“…performing as well as DIDDY, LIL’ JON, FAT JOE, REMY MA, YOUNG JEEZY, XZIBIT”

^this is why i may not tune in.

Wow if VH-1 is considered a Coon Network then what praytell is The Negroe Channel (aka BET)? I give credit to VH1 for being the only major network that gives any scope to this thing called Hip-Hop. With your average “Golden Ager” in the 32-40+ demographic the suits at VH1 actually remember “good hip-hop” and are at least taking the time to acknowledge the situation. If anything its a glaring look about how terrible The Minstrel Network is. Sadder still that they are owned by the same effin’ company.

When VH1 first debuted the HHH show I had some real skepticism and the first question I asked to myself was “WHY THE F*CK ISN’T BET DOING THIS?” Honestly for your average “Golden Ager” we remember VH1 as the Kenny G and Michael Bolton channel. But sure your right as that generation moved on to Boca Raton, they’ve filled the void with the most worthwhile historical hip-hop coverage I’ve seen in years.

Props to VH1 for real, I’m not gonna be one of these Negroes sitting arounf bitching because some “white network” did it when we didn’t even take the time to honor these people ourselves. I’ll take Flavor’s antics any day over “Shoulder Lean” and all these other Young/Yung Sambo’s cooning it up on Rap City, et al…

Dawg – your 100% coorect BET is the worst of the bunch. Their entire programming is BS. But for the record, BET is a ‘white network’, its owned by Viacom. You could replace the Black with blue, green or purple and it wouldnt make any difference. Telemundo is probably better at supporting our needs than BET.

OK heres the line up as I see it….

    VH1- Coon Network
    MTV – Mook Television
    BET – Sambo Entertainment

    I got slurs for days……

disclaimer: my utter hatred of ignrant shit aimed at hard working, decent(most of us) black folk is in no way a reflection of dallaspenn.com.
They are my twisted views and mine alone.

ps. again I hope nobody finds my liberal use of racial slurs offensive, but its my damn mouth (keyboard).

Dallas have fun with this one…

If this keeps up I’m gonna claim my Irish great-great-grandfather as my heritage…

What I want to know is when will VH1 start playing Janet Jackson’s video? Her album will be out on the 26th and she’s getting very little love from the media.
