WALE: The Best Kept Secret…

mixtape

*Salute to GeekDown*

Beats and rhymes.

That is where you gotta go in.

The start and the finish.

The alpha and the omega.

First there was the word.

After the drum, of course.

The beats reigned down.

Thunder clap in day time.

The word is the truth.

repeat and rewind.

That is Hip-Hop in its base form.

Stripped down to nothing.

Nothing has a mathematical value.

So even nothing has a value.

But you already know.

Basically.

mixtape

The Wale ‘Mixtape About Nothing’ is the best rap album since the KanYe West mixtape ‘Can’t Tell Me Nothin’.

Coinidence?

Both have more continuity than 99.63% of all the albums released today. They are the proof that concept albums can still work if the artist understands the overall concept.

That and the word nothing.

I have on my late pass to fuck with Jean Grae and Wale. Here’s your late pass. Rock it.

‘The Opening Title Sequence’
The verses about the New Jersey Nets and Eddie Murphy are both 2008 candidates for ‘Rap Verse’ of the year.

‘The Freestyle (Roc Boys)’
The Oksana Baiul reference had me getting my Surya Bonaly right [ll].

‘Vacation From Ourselves’

‘The Grown Up’
The Bet Kept Secret killed the music on this mixtape.

‘The Cliche Lil Wayne Feature (It’s The Remix Baby!)’
Nike boots.

‘The Hype’

‘The End Credits’

    First?

  2. Casey says:

lol nice…now I can actually comment. Concept raps are definatley too rare in today’s climate. I can’t even remember what was the last good one to drop, and I’m looking forward to hearing this (hopefully the hard copy, which I think I won?).

  3. Ol' Lefty says:

100 Miles and Running is another dope free mixtape of Wale’s, also Paint a Picture.

“live from the freebase factory-ay chuck, i need a hit! Wale!”

  4. the_dallas says:

    Casey,
You got the 10XDEEP pack pimpin’. Hit ‘the_dallas’ e-mail addy off with your snail mail coordinates.

The KanYe West ‘Can’t Tell Me Nothin’ mixtape was my favorite joint last year. That shit set up the Graduation album like a Gasol pick in the high post [ll]. Nahh f’real. This is good shit. I’m happy I caught it.

Phonte gotta get on next and do his thing.

  5. Joseph says:

This post (and a fresh bowl of bananas foster) made my night!

Good move highlighting Best Kept Secret. They bring it just as hard as Wale did on these tracks. And those syncopated snare hits they do never get old.

  6. ADB says:

Listen to the lyrics on ‘The Kramer’ – Wale handles the topic the way NAS wishes he had.

  7. the_dallas says:

Listen to the beginning of that track during Kramer’s rant. Listen to the express laughter of the crowd. Kramer was getting the crowd whipped into a frenzy. In a minute they were gonna go hang some people from light poles and take pictures while pointing up.

    Crazy.

Oh and yeah, Wale kills it.

  8. Combat Jack says:

Dope Mixtape. Good looking on this one D!

  9. Dart_Adams says:

No mention of “The Kramer” or “The Artistic Integrity”? That’s why I named Wale one of my 12 Emcees To Watch In ’08”.

    One.

  10. Chief says:

Yeah, in the single download iTunes age, mixtapes ARE the new concept records. I gotta give some dap to Mickey Factz as well. He’s put out 3 quality mixtapes in the past year. Back 2 the Future was dat fire.

To those latecomers to the Wale party check out his previous mixtape, 100 Miles and Running:

  11. h.e.r. says:

and if you love substance then you’ll love Wale
but most ni88as love nothin so i made this tape..

    nice post! i posted footage

  12. Luq says:

Wale… showing folks that DC peoples can do more than bang on some pots and pans…

  13. Timbo says:

Thanks dude. I slept. I’ll keep this completely real – I saw a few posts about this dude and, literally based on his name and appearance, assumed he was some Southern ringtone rapper. How wrong could I be? Based on your post, I’ve downloaded this mixtape and his earlier’ 100 Miles and Running’ joint. Dude’s the truth.

    Oh yeah, fuck xxlmag.com/columnists.

  14. I have ALL of Wale’s mixtapes, including Ambassador of the Capital, HAte is the New Love, 100 Miles and Running, Paint a Picture, and of course the tape in this post if anybody is interested.
    DX has my email address.

    OH and DP?
You two would get along very well. Wale = sneaker fiend. As if it wasn’t obvious, I’ve witnessed a glance firsthand. Even when the rest of his outfit is looking busted, his shoes are fresh lol.

  15. the_dallas says:

Wale is offish. He and I was chopping it up for a second after his set until the popo cleared the block.

I fucks with duke now [ll].

  16. ‘Eff’ a pork patrol!

  17. Royal says:

While the rest of these fools are running around going apeshit over the leaked tracks off of the Carter 3, I refuse to waste my time seeing if its worth a damn.
I think Wale does a great job on shedding light on the current state of hip-hop through the A&R from skits on his mixtapes (aside from lyrically murdering everytrack he’s on.)
Crank dat Flying Squirrel – “Were going to have tons of kids making youtube videos of the dance”
The A&R skit on 100 miles and running is a good one also about rappers running around with ‘lil’ or ‘young’ in front of their names.
Wale just putting that real talk out there again.

Mixtape About Nothin…must listen for 08 summer.
