R.I.P. Black Moses a/k/a Chef…

What do you say to properly respect a living legend?

ISAAC HAYES reminded me of my uncles from my father’s side of the family. For African Americans these folks are our greatest generation. They navigated America when it was more than legal to display discrimination and conduct hate. These folks didn’t have to make that scenario up in their minds. My imagination was their reality.

Peep that Wattstax documentary. That concert reminded me of the block party concert that DAVE CHAPPELLE produced. Except the Wattstax concert was held in the still smoldering embers of Watts devastaed community. The theme was that people could still be… People. The babies had to be taught well. Even with everyday struggles threatening to tear this community apart there was a ray of light. All folks need sometimes is just a little sunlight to keep their sanity.

Its obvious how a lack of sunlight has made some folks plum stupid crazy.

I respect the people, and the artists that had to walk the hard road. I especially respect those that carried the flag for justice and equality. Now it’s our turn. I miss JAMES BROWN. I missed ISAAC HAYES this summer in Prospect Park. I won’t be missing PATTI LaBELLE at Wingate Field later this month.

These men and women have shown us the path to evolution.

You can’t ever get to evolution without putting love first.

RIP to another one of our legends. Isaac Hayes will be missed but leaves behind a legacy. That Stax documentary was great. I peeped it a few months ago. He was indeed a visionary and a trailblazer.

And Chocolate Salty Balls will always make me laugh. RIP.

Respect due to another legend lost…

(Also eff Trey Stone & Matt Parker of “South Park” – but thats another day, I don’t wanna go all Game up in here while paying my respects)

    *bumps “Walk On By”*

  3. Hayes and Mac had recently worked on a movie together

I got a photo of them together@ my site

    Spooky

    Rip The Both Of them….

  4. I’m a little pissed that Hayes died at home.

He ruined my “hospitals is the number two killer of niggas” rant

Thankfully, niggas is still the number one killer of niggas so I have that to fall back on.

    “Spooky” is right.

    RIP

    @ 40

I was actually thinking about Parker and Stone…they tore Chef to hell, but at the end they spoke about being mad at Scientology for taking a friend rather then being mad at a friend for being took.

  7. 40 says:

@ Amadeo. I’m calling bullshit on that response of Stone/Parker.

I’m gonna treat this Isaac drop at DPdotCom as our little wake/service for him and maintain on that for now. How about a few days from now when we’re reflecting in the blogosphere on it I’ll let me gripes be known about them dudes…

Right now its about Isaac & Bernie.

Isaac Haye’s musical catalog is tremendous! Black Moses is real.
On a happy note, just keep Isaac Hayes, James Brown, Richard Pryor and many of the past artists, creators, comedians names alive and they will be alright.

While I love Chapelle’s Block Party, I thought Wattstax was far greater.
As far as the South Park duo. I’m not mad at them. Here me out. Many people in position to work with Isaac Hayes but did not. There’s was a point in the 90’s when he had material he wanted to release but could not find a label that wanted to work with him.
He eventually found home with a young European label who could not believe no one wanted to work with the great Isaac Hayes. As far as Stone & Parker, they could have chosen any one else but they gave the job to Isaac Hayes. I think that says a whole lot considering that Hayes was not huge name in the late 90’s.
