Enter the Wu-Tang Slipper…

wu tang

^ One of the most sonically influential albums in rap history…

The discussion we had the other day regarding sampling was official. RZA may have been the last producer to go mainstream with densely layered sample production. The music industry may need to look inward to their lawyers who stymied sound development and production as the ones who killed the music business.

As for this Wu-Tang chinese slipper…

I’ma need to copp the Game of Death tracksuit to match up hardbody. Kill me if I do.

we used to wear “karate shoes” in the 1-3rd grade…..

I never wore them but kids used to actually wear them to school……….

little back story about the album..i think it came out and did modest numbers….rikfin released an edited version and the numbers took off .

this was when “east coast” fans weren’t buying records and several heavily hyped ny acts had gotten big buzz but sold no records…

this was a great album….if for no other reason than it changed staten island’s nickname from “gat-tin island” to shaolin… and that’s one to grow on.

Enter the Wu-Tang only sold about 30K its first week of release. But its sound was so undeniable (it had a gang of singles and album cuts that STAYED playing in the hood) that it still went platinum; without any significant radio play.
The kung-fu slippers definitely a had a nice little run in the hood when Kung-Fu theater on channel 5 was still in effect.

I think c.r.e.a.m. eventually got heavy burn on the radio.

but yeah, they worked the album..multiple singles released…lot of videos…

  5. Cosign get- I rocked the karates as well. Never understood why schools let us wear them with them slippery ass bottoms.

Come to think of it, I wonder why I never saw girls wearing them? Oh yeah, they were hideous.

I have a homie who still wears them. They go perfect with his “vintage” FUBU football jersey.

    Yeah, I said “vintage.”

  6. When ‘Enter’ first dropped, I swear to this day I was the only dude in LA listening to it. In fact, I had bought the ‘M.E.T.H.O.D. MAN’ b/w ‘Protect Ya Neck’ cassingle from the Slauson swapmeet a good year before the album hit stores. The asian lady said they only had 3 copies. NOBODY out here had even heard of any of them yet. Believe me, I popped that tape, just in time for the whole album to drop.

  7. getthesenets says:

    TG,

gotta ask..did you pop open/unscrew the cassette shell and try to put the tape back together?

we NEVER threw bad tapes away….

    =========================
speaking of wu and martial arts films..

anybody else find it odd that dudes used to worship shaw brothers movies, worship bruce lee, have 50 vhs tapes of kung fu movies, have asian “lettering” or characters tattooed on their body and STILL go to the chinese takeout and disrespect the man who worked there?

  8. Johnny Sagan says:

Disrespecting the Chinese takeout man seems to make the food taste better–it’s all about having it your way and aggressively building trust–this emotional dynamic is actually seen in a lot of Kung Fu movies, as brilliantly referenced in that skit on The Score: “And don’t put the retarded leg in it, neither!” Also, in my heavily Jamaican hood, there is a fundamental miscommunication between Jamaican and Chinese standards of what constitutes “well-done”, most poignantly evident when people are ordering beef and broccoli: to the Jamaicans, well done broccoli would be soft and delicious, steamed to within an inch of its life, while for the Chinese the proper response to customers’ demand that the broccoli be “well-done” is to FRY it harder! Hilarious miscommunications ensue, but what’s an onlooker to really do?

  9. get-
That time, nah. The whole shit was coming out the following tuesday (wherehouse ftw!). Before that, I’d pop open the cassette enough to fit some tweezers in it, get hold of the tape, & scotch tape that shit the best I could. If I had to respool, eff it. ‘L’ taken.

There is something perversely hilarious when a fool who barely speaks the language is ordering food from an even less english speaking restaurant owner/cook.

Seems like the miscommunique jump-off point is always over too few shrimp or gimpy chicken parts. Isn’t Blacks arguing with Asians over chicken some sort of oxymoron?

^ one who is from Asia. The attribute is to remind the former slaves that they are descendants of the 1st civilizations on this planet, which were in Asia, and not just jungle, African bunnies.

  19. getthesenets says:

    ok, thanks $yk

i knew NOI and NGE used the term “Asiatic Black man”…….never understood what the term meant..I figured if it was Asia..they would have just said Asian….
asiatic is like a trick question

No disrespect, but I’ve had this discussion before…Blacks don’t find value in ourselves..so consistently and across the board we latch on to other groups of people and cultures…except for that brief period from 88-91..when we bought African leather medallions..made in China, from Korean merchants….

  20. $yk says:

“so consistently and across the board we latch on to other groups of people and cultures”

    ^ ’40 acres and a mule’=self empowerment

once we were denied a way to make for ourselves we became reliant on what we could get from others. we were programmed for the matrix real early.

    slaves became consumers
