The Blackbook Diaries…

piecebook

I can remember my mother being pissed off with me because I had sold some of my blackbooks. At the time I know I didn’t value the energy I had put into those books. I would take pictures of the burners I saw subways and walls and then copy that style using my tag name. I used the pictures for references on lettering and coloration as well.

When SACHA JENKINS isn’t creating stage plays and television shows and TWittering (@tedbawno?) he is curating books on graffiti masterpieces with the big homey Chino BYI. Their first masterpiece diary is titled ‘Piecebook‘ and it is a collection of artwork from some legendary graf writers. The piecebook or blackbook is where you store your ideas and you perfect your style.

The blackbook is a diary in the sense that it describes your progression as a graf artist from toy to b-boy, but the blackbook also holds some designs from your closest associates and the other writers that you respect for the all-world style or their all-city status. Piecebooks were supposed to be passed down from artists to one another because everyone did shit for the love of the art back then. I sold mine because of all the photos I had inside of them.

SACHA and Chino have a companion to the OG Piecebook called ‘Piecebook Reloaded‘. I’m gonna go on Amazon and cop these joints so I can reminisce and enjoy the artwork. I may even get off my ass and go to AlphaBeta and pick up a few cans. On second thought, I don’t need to get arrested again for a long time so maybe I wil just go to Pearl Paint and pickup a blackbook and some Design markers.

free drinks

I’m getting myself in shape for the College Music Journal week here in NYC in about 10 days or so. Tons of bands and performers. Mostly tons of free alcohol. I’ve been getting back into the obama swing so that my liver will be thoroughly moistened for the CMJ.

I go to so many obamas I should get a Nobel Peace Prize for all the hard work that my liver performs.

If you are in NYC for the CMJ make sure you reach out to me so that we can connect-politic-ditto at a few of the shows.

priceless

Timeless Truth, the hosts of Industry Shakedown Radio are shooting a video today for their track ‘Priceless’ featuring Sean Price. I’ll have some behind the scenes pix to post tomorrow. The lifestyle representatives will be in full effect. One of the messages Solace sent to me was to make sure I came dipped. With Meyhem, Thirstin’ Howl 3rd and Timeless Truth on hand I had better pull some official lifestyle from out the archives.

Here’s a video clip of Ruck going thru some I.T.’s in prep for the shoot.

NYC’s Bittersweet Business Deals…

crapple

The image above is from an NYC Health Department subway ad eschewing the consumption of sweetened beverages. The artwork makes the beverage appear to be the iconic lemon flavored ice tea from Snapple? WTF?!? Wasn’t Snapple embedded in a multi-million dollar partnership with NYC, and more specifically the NYC Department of Education?

Not that I think you should take heed to every press release that comes down the pike, but this shit was major news when it dropped several years ago. Snapple became the “official beverage” brand for NYC. Snapple vending machines were installed in city agencies throughout the five boroughs. And schools also because when you aren’t allowed to leave school grounds for a quarter water or a bag of chips you can at least copp yourself a $1 can of Snapple.

Unfortunately for NYC, the deal wasn’t as sweet as the Snapple drinks are. So now Snapple gets thrown under the proverbial bus(a B25 I imagine) because the city is undergoing a policy shift in the war against the poor. City Hall thinks that if poor people stop drinking as much sody pops and sweetened beverages maybe there won’t be as much diabetes in the ‘hood. This idea is a fail also.

Let’s smarten up NaS and realize that poor people consume crap for one reason. It’s all we can afford. We grow to like the shit after buying it for generations. but if I could afford Kumbucha drinks I would copp those instead. For the same 16ozs. of a healthier beverage priced at $3 or more I can buy myself a Tropical Fantasy for $.50 and get the most sugar per 8oz. serving available. Those are the real decisions that poor people have to make.

Why is public policy always about threatening poor people?

Because the war on the poor continues unabated.
