SNEAKER FIENDS UNITE!

Monday, November 17th, 2008

am1

The official inaugural Sneaker Fiends Unite! NYC Tour went down this weekend. A big shout out goes to Encylopedia Black, Nattiez, Zoey and Grand Master for coming through and repping S.F.U.

We traveled from midtown Manhattan to 149th Street and 3rd Ave in the Bronx, up further to Fordham Road, down to Frederick Douglass Blvd in Harlem, then to Delancey Street and finally to Spring Street.

The lesson I took from this weekend is that collecting and consuming are two different animals, and that the cheetah and the giraffe might just be the same (that was a totally inside [ll] joke).

The next SFU NYC Tour is set for December 20th where we hope to come up on some retailers desperate to liquidate their assets prior to the end of the year. In the meantime and in between time enjoy some of the footage from this past weekend…

Cotton Comes To Harlem…

I had invites to three events in Manhattan last night and all were going down at the same exact time from 7pm-10pm.

1) T.I. LAUNCHES A CLOTHING LINE CALLED AKOO
Music industry starfuckers

2) XXL x FILA @ FILA STORE
Magazine industry starfuckers

3) NIKE ACG @ THE VAULT, HARLEM
Sneakerfiends united

I chose door number three.

Why?

Because NIKE was bringing their ass all the way uptown and at the end of the day I am a sneaker fiend. Yeah, I have a retarded Ralph Lauren collection also along with way too many action figures and comic books, but if I had the choice to be in a room with some of the most beautiful people in this city I would still choose to be around “my people”. For NIKE to spend some money in the ‘hood and not just at the stores on 125th, but the ‘hood is saying something about the realization of Black spending power and conversely, Black style.

This is where I belonged on this night. No pretensions and no industry people with hate in their blood. No obama (open bar) either for the kid although they did cater the party with some righteous soul food. Better yet, sole food. Catfish, scrimps, real mac-n-cheese, candied yams and collards. Somebody needed to yell “church” up in that motherfucker. The message for today party people is to know your lane, stay inside of it, and play it to the fullest. In that way there will never be too much on your plate.

Industry Shakedown Radio…

SOLACE and PAY JAY were gracious hosts when I fell through their spot last week. Industry Shakedown Radio is gonna be my new Friday night internets hangout. New music plus classics from two Hip-Hop fans. Keep your eye on these dudes.

That is how I met these dudes in the first place. They were mobbed up and ‘Lo down. I was looking at these cats crazy because they were mad young to be wearing classic vintage lifestyle. These dudes were clocking me because they fucks with the internets crazy.

We politiced real quick and I gave them my website card, but they didn’t even need it. Fam hit my e-mail up and formally invited me to hang out at their radio show. I can’t wait to get back to the show to wild out.

Here’s the radio rip of the show. There’s some cursing. Actually, there’s a lot of cursing. It’s fucking college radio. But these dudes run a tight show. Even though I was fucking with the Henrock. I went in. [ll].

The Doctor Was In…

So thanks to my homey JAMES BLAGDEN I enjoyed an evening with Doctor K a/k/a DWIGHT GOODEN.

The trifecta of GOODEN, DARRYL STRAWBERRY and MIKE TYSON will forever be my boyhood superhero troika.

NIKE Sportswear has created a monthly series celebrating the New York athletes that have made the brand iconic. I taped most of the interview between the host CHRIS ISENBERG and the Doc (see below).

Man, I wish I was interviewing the Doc. CHRIS had a shitload of notes but he wasn’t able to catch a consistent flow. Doc is soft spoken and not blustery like I imagine STRAWBERRY to be. You have to tease info out of him. CHRIS didn’t hit this assignment out of the park possibly because he was too young to vividly remember the dominance of the young DWIGHT GOODEN.

Also I think CHRIS is a lifelong Yankees fan.

I could make the same complaint for the organizers because the commemorative poster they gave away wasn’t even the image of DWIGHT pitching the fireball. Anything other than this image is a fail.

At the end of the day this event was a home run because of the concept of pulling these iconic athletes down to the store to hang out and share a slice of their lives. NIKE stays winning.

And I did have a chance to get in a question during the Q & A part of the evening.

I asked DWIGHT which hairstyle best represented Doctor K? Was it the “wet look” care free curl from the 1986 World Champs? Was it the Cameo flat top from the early 90’s? Or was it the short-cropped Ceasar cut that he sported when he pitched in the Bronx for the Evil Empire.

doctor k My money was on the “wet look”.
