Hip-Hop still has the ability to surprise me after all of these years. It’s still confident and boisterous letting you know it is in the building. It’s still trying to come up, by hook or crook. And it is still so New York, and by that I mean Brooklyn.

Last night Joell Ortiz hosted a Hip-Hop homecoming at the legendary nightclub S.O.B.’s with a few hundred of his friends and two of the hottest rappers in the streets. Sean Price and Troy Ave came thru to represent for their respective parts of Brooklyn.

This show was so Hip-Hop there might have been only two chicks in the building. One of them being Sean P’s wife, Mz.B. The other was some sloppy drunk white chick. In the NYC I grew up in this chick would be sporting a buck fifty on the morning after but NYC now is way more forgiving of disrespectful people. Hell, even Giuliani was voted in twice.

As much as Hip-Hop needs the arthouse aspirations of a kanYe West to aid in its global growth it still needs the underground artists like Joell Ortiz and Sean Price that give back to the culture by returning to it’s roots in clubs like S.O.B.’s and giving opportunities to young artists like Troy Ave to experience the energy of a sold out live show.

Good Wood NYC and vintage apparel dealer Coat Of Arms have collaborated on a detailed pin set called ‘Da Bears’ inspired by Polo Ralph Lauren’s teddy bear motifs.

And guess who was chosen to rep the ‘Lo lifestyle for the advert campaign?

NOT Young Dro or Vado, but the Silk Shirt Ambassador – Meyhem Lauren.

Long Live The Streets…

troy ave

Between Maffew Ragazino and this young artist Troy Ave the NYC streets are positioned to take over rap’s underground sound.

Troy Ave’s mixtape – Bricks In My Backpack: The Harry Powder Story is buzzing hard on the internets.

Download it here.

Troy Ave is a student of the game. Dude has definitely plotted his movement upwards. His cadence and content is filled with street dreams and their stories. Troy Ave reminds me of a combination of Fab x Jada x 50Cent when they were all at their prime.

Next week Joell Ortiz will be headlining a show at S.O.B.’s and I’ve been promised some special guest rappers from Brooklyn will rock the stage with J.O.

Hip-Hop ain’t dead, it’s alive and underground.

The Lifestyle In Real Life…

solace

My homey the super bad emcee Solace from Timeless Truth is a hardbody Lifestyler. There is a way to rock the lifestyle that isn’t simply about stunting, but also about respecting the environment that we live in and taking advantage of this life.

I fux with Solace [ll] because he actually wears his gear, unlike me where I have so much on ice that most fools think I only own one bear sweater (its more like twenty). When I posted the pics of that Polo Sport Great White Shark tee Solace hit me up and told me that it was one of his favorite I.T.s for rocking when you spend an afternoon at the aquarium in Coney Island.

Timeless Truth are the younger brothers I never knew I had. We even come from the same global position in NYC. Further proof the minds that vibe on the same frequency will find each other. We hear the same universal hum then we respond in kind to that cosmic cosine wave.

And yes, Nathan’s cheese fries >>>

Joell Ortiz: The Magic Number…

j.o.

I shot some behind-the-scenes footage with Joell Ortiz awhile ago that will prA’li never see the light of day. He is one of the most interesting and articulate music artists I have encountered. Joell’s backstory is ripe for a rap noir flick. I’m happy that some folks are taking a moment to document his life.

Even if its only for a New York minute.
