Summertime Sweet Spots…

a life

Saturday finally got underway for me at 7pm on the lower east side at a store called Alife Rivington Club. The shop is managed by NYC tastemaking legend CHRIS VIDAL (formerly of Flight Club NY fame). CHRIS opened up the backyard space and they barbecued and spun classic rap shit. HOF from OnSmash was in the joint with the homey Plain Pat.

The next spot to fall thru was the SoleFood block party on Lispenard Street in TriBeCa. When I got to this joint it was already over and done. I parlayed for a minute tho’ to chop it up with some folks like MEKA from 2DopeBoyz. I’m really happy for MEK that he is living on this side of town now. I have to get him to come to the Back 2 School edition of the Sneaker Fiends Unite! NYC tour.

The next stop on the run with the setting sun was to the 92Y space in TriBeCa to watch Game Rebellion open for Blitz the Ambassador. Game Rebellion is still the band that I think too many folks are sleeping on. Their political rants are tuned up for whatever ails this country. Now that BUSH is out of office they drop songs about Wall Street greed and corruption along with police brutality and menage a’trois with club groupies. What more could you ask from rockstars?

The nail in the coffin was when Che Guerilla pointed me to the Red Bull Space. An obama in Manhattan on a Saturday night? What kind of shit would this be? Some corporate dewshbaggery for sure, but what kind of alcohol were they serving? Svedka FTW. The music was fucking atrocious. The Red Bull did give me wings though. It’s 8am now and I am just popping away at the video console. I’m wondering what kind of shenanigans I will get into today?

^ You know you want a bite!

Our little sister on the internets, Marvelous Mo, has a tasty little deadstock treat for us sneaker fiends…

A crispy pair of Air Jordan 13 retros in the flint/oxblood colorway.

I believe they called these joints the “Grey Toes” (natch).

Call them what you want to if you buy them from her.

($175 or thereabouts) Size 6Y

Her e-mail address is moisdeadserious [at] gmail.

A panel from J. NICHOLAS’ Detective Boogaloo comic

JAMAR NICHOLAS is a friend of this website. He has been self-publishing his art and comicbooks for nearly 10 years. J reached out to me and told me that he was going to make some of his original artwork available for purchase. A closed mouth never gets fed and the romantic myth of a starving artist isn’t what’s up. Though J is far from starving.

Here’s a chance for you to come up on some OG panels from the Detective Boogaloo series as well as something commissioned if you have the time to let him grind. Give him a holler at jamar [dot] nicholas [at] gmail [dot] com. Detective Boogaloo is a mixture of graphic art styles and wit. It reminds me of Bugs Bunny and the Looney Tunes cartoons that I love because of all the double entendres that exist in the artwork and writing.

While we are on the subject of comicbooks, here’s a preview of the Ghostface Killah graphic novel titled ‘Cell Block Z‘ about to be released.

If there is a brand of sneakers that I lean on immediately it would have to be the Nike Skateboarding releases. The Nike SB Dunks are part of the reason this is the most popular shoe for people in the know. The SB Dunk is available in three different versions. The classic high and low and the trendsetting mid that features an ankle strap.

I fux with the SB Dunk highs mostly because of the versatility these shoes give you when you are wearing jeans or shorts. The SB Dunk highs have that padded tongue that you can use as a breaker for your jeans. Peep the details like contrasting stitching throughout. Plus, the SB Dunks always have premium leathers and materials. They are almost too well made to skate in.

Peace to OKayPlayer SHAMZ and the ‘UnFutura’ highs.

If you are lucky enough to come up on a pair of Nike SB Dunks you need to walk good because your feet will definitely be having a good day.

j period

When J.Period said that he would spin at the 1st Annual Bring Your Own Blogger BBQ is the moment that I could hear the space shuttle taking off. J.Period is one of the subjects for the DP.com ‘Fanboyz Unite!’ webisodes.

*P.S. I feel like a Dewshy McDeucester everytime I say “webisode”.

J.Period just happens to be one of the deejays that fux with the Roots as much as I do. If you haven’t downloaded his special free mixtapes for the BYOB BBQ please do so. Or quietly kill yourself in scalding hot water in your shower.

J.Period can go from creating the definitive volume of LAURYN HILL music to scoring official major motion picture film trailers like Street Kings and American Gangster and then video games like Tony Hawk’s Motion and DJ Hero. J.Period is a gamer fanboy supreme which we will see in his ‘Fanboyz Unite!’ video.

J is also one of the deejays active in breaking new music across the Hip-Hop genre. Tune in to J.Period’s Truelements Radio channel sponsored by Toyota Scion. Speaking of hybrids… J.Period’s mixtape of hybrid rock-rap group Game Rebellion called ‘Searching For Rick Rubin’ was tha’ sheet.

The Bring Your Own Blogger BBQ is proud to have J.Period as one of our deejays. Bring your own beatmaker out this Saturday and chill with us.
