rakim
rakim

Rakim is the father to the styles of NaS, Jay, Black Thought, Ice Cube, Raekwon, Prodigy, B.I.G. and Big Pun. And subsequently any other latter and lesser emcee that considers themselves to be lyrically impressive. But the truth is that Rakim’s work over the last ten years doesn’t have the impact to the culture of Hip-Hop that his first ten years tattoed on rap music. Sadly, it’s actually not admissible.

Did Rakim fall off? No. The peloton caught up to him. The wake of the lane that Rakim created allowed rappers with more charisma(B.I.G., Big Pun) and greater stamina(NaS, Jay-Z) to draft this sentient artist back to the Earth. Their metaphors and similes increased our sensations and aided Hip-Hop in transforming the globe, but it was Rakim who gave them the spark of ghetto gangster poetry.

I’m not going to tell you to open up the new Rakim album ‘The 7th Seal’ because you might feel let down that there aren’t any new classics on the disk. Can we fault Rakim for setting the bar as high as he did? Nope. The legacy of music we have from him still rates the consideration for his GOAT status. Is it selfish and unfair to want artists to remain in that box that we first encountered them?

‘Holy Are You’ *(best of the new)

‘I Ain’t No Joke’

‘Follow The Leader’

‘Juice (Know The Ledge)’

‘Microphone Fiend’ *(possibly the greatest rap song of all time)

Toy Story: Star Wars – The Fett Legacy

fett

I have been going in hardbody on mty action figure steez ever since the TJX family of retailers has been coming up on them. I’m not too fond of the latest generations of Star Wars and G.I.Joe figures because of their pune design but when I saw this three pack called ‘Star Wars Evolutions: The Fett Legacy’ I had to copp.

Boba Fett was only like most prA’li the second most badass guy in the universe. How many other people were unafraid to give Darth Vader backtalk? Boba Fett was all like, “Captain Solo is worth a lot to me buddy.”. And then Vader told him he’d get his paper whether Solo lived the carbonization process or not. Fux it, I’m watching Ep.5 tonight.

Mattel also gives up Boba Fett’s dad, Jango Fett in the pack as well as this super badass Force legacy character named Mandalore the Indomitable. This dude is supposed to be character that all the Mandalorian bounty hunters sprung up from.

I admit that I don’t have the Force legacy shit down pat like that but I do know that the Fetts wear Mandalorian armor and you have to be extra hardbody to own that shit. It’s the equivalent of rocking a dookey rope walking around Albee Square Mall in 1985.

Mandalore and other Sith confederates

True Star Wars junkies like myself appreciate the attention to detail and articulation that these figures have. I just wish their scale was a bit larger. I saw several other legacy packs that featured characters from the days of the Old Republic. I might have to copp the Clone legacy pack if I see that joint floating around.

You already know I copped two(2) of the Fett legacy packs. Someone just needs to give me a reason to send it to them.

larry david

Larry David’s smash series ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ is on its way to basic cable. ‘Curb’ is one of those moments in television that you can recognize is instant vintage. I laugh out loud for all the wrong reasons. Larry David has shown us all to be bigoted, self-absorbed sycophants. He is the only one among us to have the courage to always live in that space. At least on television.

The best part of this cable deal is that TV Guide and TV Land will be acquiring broadband licenses to bring ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ to the internets. Good for them. I will enjoy when I can view entire episodes of ‘Curb’ from my computer…

moshino

I was on the internets doing a search for my IC homey Casimir when I came across the above image that was rendered by Japanese artist KATSURA MOSHINO. It reminded me of some things I have seen at FreeDarko.com and I imagine that is where FD’s graphics dudebro gets some of his inspiration.

I vaguely remember the illustration because it was part of a Nike campaign in 1998 for their Forceposite basketball shoes. I owned a pair of these kicks because they were fresh as hell and combined some of my favorite Nike memes like air and styrofoam. The shoes were actually heavy for a pair of foam sneakers but the silver metallic finish was a neck breaker and when you are in the business of styling on fools you are gonna need a pair of kicks in your repertoire that make people look twice.

foamposite

The Forceposite shoe was worn by Tim Duncan in the same lockout shortened NBA season that the Spurs defeated my Knicks for the title. That didn’t stop me from wearing these sneakers though. Whenever Nike does some wild shit like putting styrofoam, carbon fiber or solar panels on their sneakers I am always the first person in line to cop a pair.

So when Nike developed the Flightposite shoes for the young superstar Kevin Garnett you can bet your bottom dollar that I was ready to go and spend my last dollar to rock out with a pair. The Flightposite I shoe has since been retro’d and released back into the mainstream. My favorite pair was the Flightposite III because this was the most futuristic extraterrestrial close encounters alien looking shoe of all time.

Now seeing an image of the Flightposite III got me all hot and bothered. I needed to put these shoes back in my life. Preferably a pair of deadstocked (never worn, not even tried on) 12’s for the everlasting icebox archive. The true story is that I own a pair that I have worn considerably since I copped them originally back in 2002. I just wanted another pair to keep in deep storage because I am crazy like that.

This is why the internets is my very best friend. I know that if I just put a wish out into the internets universe the thing I am looking for will find my inbox.

I’m gonna get these joints again before the year is over.
