Gospel Music…

Wednesday, July 13th, 2011

The Doppelgangaz crew is on the come up. I wasn’t really fuxing with these kids at first because they seemed to rappity rap and earnest on some 2011 Tribe Called Quest shit. In the meantime the Doppelgangaz kept working on their craft by refining it and expanding their soundscape.

Then all of a sudden I heard the track ‘Doppel Gospel’ and I had to take a second listen. Out of literally nowhere the Doppelgangaz were on my rap radar. Then I watched them open for SlaughterHouse at the Highline Ballroom Shady Records party. They entered the stage wearing black cloaks and Jordans. The Doppelgangaz didn’t give a fux. I FUX with that.

I’m gifting you a few tracks from their recent album project ‘Lone Sharks’. The Doppelgangaz are dropping some real jazzy rap music. Shit is sophisticated beyond their age (21). This production goes off the beaten path for most of the shit that people are playing today. Their production reminds me somewhat of Tommy Mas beats on the Action Bronson ‘Dr.Lechter’ CD.

Left of center is good for rap music, at least as far as my earholes are concerned.

‘Doppel Gospel’

‘Suppository’

‘Suppository’ is another one of the DPGZ subversive rap bangers.

‘Like What Like Me’

‘Like What Like Me’ was the track that made me finally reach out to the Doppelgangaz and demand a copy of this ‘Lone Sharks’ project. Those drums are simple and brilliant. The video for this track is also banana bread genius.

My new favorite track from the CD is ‘At Night’. THIS is that Tribe vibe I was talking about. I need me a Volkswagen Karman Ghia convertible so I can bang this joint on the way out to Jones Beach.

The Block Is Hot…

Tuesday, July 12th, 2011

Aliens are the new (old) boogeymen. When you need that go-to bad guy extraterrestrials serve as a handy stand-in for Black men and arabs. With that premise the producers of ‘Shaun Of The Dead’ and ‘Hot Fuzz’ have made a thoroughly entertaining earthlings vs. aliens summer feature.

Attack The Block has the right amount of gore, machismo and comedy to make it worth your time when it hits theatres at the end of the month. Vicious aliens come to Brixton neighborhood apartment complex and get more than they bargained for from a local band of juvenile delinquents.

The lead character is a 15yr old Black kid. This movie could not have been produced in America because of our relationship to young Black males. In Europe its a lot different. Well maybe not a lot different, but the neighborhood where the movie was set is mixed racially, just not economically.

The juvees are a motley crew of mixed race kids led by a Black dude. Watching a young Black male in a motion picture go from thug to hero and still maintain his thug style was worth my every viewing minute. Cool off for a few this summer and peep this hot flick.

q-tip

True story, funny story about Q-Tip…

I know him as Jonathon from the days when Queens kids would occupy the IND platform at Queens Plaza and take those subways to their respective schools. The kids that congregated on the platform went to every make and model of school there was. Jarobi went to Brooklyn Tech and Tip went to Murray Bergtraum.

All I can tell you about ATCQ back then was that they went about their business like true professionals. There was no subway rhyme cipher. Truthfully, Q-Tip was as much about broads as he must have been about his beats. I feel like we butted heads [ll] from time to time chasing chicks from Norman Thomas HS.

Several years after high school and I see that A Tribe Called Quest is killing shit with Bonita Applebum. Until I saw the music video on Ralph McDaniels show I didn’t even realize how culturally significant Jarobi and Jonathon were to become. Their style was effortless and unique. ATCQ had my full support from that point forward. Sure, the music was dope, but these were also MY dudes making good.

I run into Q-Tip several months later at Powerhouse nightclub wearing a Tribe Called Quest tee. I loved that t-shirt and one of my exes (read: jumpoffs) got me for that joint just like the first Tribe album cassette which I ended up buying three(3) times. When Jonathon saw my shirt he got all tight and said to his homey, “Look at this nigger.”

I was like, “What?”. Tip asked me, “Where did you get that shirt?” I told him that I bought it at a skateshop downtown. I bought it from my dude who used to piece me Stussy shirts and Fresh Jive caps at this shop on Varick Street. What did it matter since I was repping his band was my response. Then he told me that none of the money from that shirt I was wearing was going to support the group, that his artwork’s copyright was being used without his permission.

Q-Tip’s complaints didn’t make any sense to me at the time like they do now, but in the same instance I think he was getting a lesson in piracy and commercial art. If you don’t want someone to steal your ideas you might should prA’li just stop thinking. And if you ever have a good idea, you best be having another one.

ATCQ was a great idea and NO ONE can ever take that away from Q-Tip.
