coup d'etat

Okay, so we all saw the ERYKAH BADU video right ?

Have we all watched the ‘Scarface School Play’?

Both are super effective viral videos aimed at sparking a discussion concerning the images that we see on the daily and take for granted on how they shape our consciousness. Sex and violence are uber-pervasive memes in our culture. Sports might be the most consumed, most egregious combination of the two. Think about it, conquest and domination through the use of men playing with balls. Do you still need to see the pause sign? Fine, [ll].

Video games pick up the slack for those folks not interested in the passive act of simply watching television. These are the folks that want some hand-eye stimulation. Again, [ll]. Sex and violence are the pre-text, subtext and the text message for our cultural entertainment. Why else would Lady Gaga be so damn popular? She plays to our most basic desires of witnessing sex and violence.

EYKAH BADU spoke to Black Entertainment Television about the process of creating her viral video…

BADU’s video ‘Window Seat’ speaks to our most base visceral inclinations, which are sex and violence. Say what you want to about BADU, but she found a way to push people’s buttons without exploiting children.

power pack

I used to go to the Comic Book Club on Tuesday nights which was hosted by a couple of uber-geeks who would review dozens of titles weekly, but for the love of comics it was the best $5 I could ever spend. One of those uber-geeks, ALEX ZALBEN, has been granted the dream job of a lifetime. He gets to write a mini-series starring the god of thunder along with Power Pack. When Walt Simonson was on the drawing board for Thor it was one of the most lavish, fantasy filled books ever. Simonson created stunning characters as well as he gave a new edge to the staid Thor mythology.

Zalben is penning a Power Pack mini-series where the kids are faced with their grandmother’s imminent passing. As kids they try to prevent the inevitable and this means traveling to Asgard to somehow secure a mythical golden apple. These are the golden apples that have given the Asgardians their immortality. Power Pack hopes these apples can do the same for their grandmother. I like the storyline already and Zalben being a fan of stories like C.S.Lewis’ Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe means he’ll insert a dark and true life element into the story. It was the reality that nothing lasts forever which makes me love comics to this day.

Have we changed from the earliest humans who carved in stone and wrote on walls to express parables?

Nah, now we just kick the truth to the online youth.

Inspectah Deck’s Manifesto…

manifesto

Inspectah Deck has written some of the rap music lines that I use most often in my life, from the classic survival song ‘C.R.E.A.M.’ to my spaceship anthem ‘Triumph’, Deck isn’t the face that you see when you think of the Wu-Tang Clan but he is backbone that the Clan uses to stand tall.

Inspectah Deck’s latest album ‘Manifesto’ drops tomorrow March 23rd, 2010. Rebel I.N.S. gave me a few minutes to tell me about this project and let me quote some of his rhymes to him while we chilled in the New Era store.
