Do The Right Thing 2nite!

do the right thing

I remember when SPIKE LEE’s ‘Do The Right Thing’ was premiering twenty years ago. The supremacy apologist New York Times claimed that this movie was going to incite race riots across the city. As a supremacy bellwether, the NYTimes was trying to forecast the reaction to the disillusionment of justice Black felt towards the Yusuf Hawkins case. Little did we know at that moment, but the NYTimes was a co-conspirator in placing the five(5) innocent youth in prison for the infamous “Central Park jogger” case.

New York City still suffers from racism as do most metropolitan areas but now in the year 2009 it has become more clear to some that the real enemy was always the person behind the curtain pulling the strings. SPIKE LEE isn’t feared or reviled in Hollywood any longer. Even the band Public Enemy is viewed with whimsical nostalgia. What we thought was bad under the first Bush presidency we found was exponentially worse under the second Bush administration. And with that perspective lens I will view tonight’s screening of ‘Do The Right Thing’.

RAFI KAM knew just what I needed to pick up my spirits when I was in Atlanta. He patched me in to a friend of the iNternets Celebrities named JESSE THORN. MaximumFun.org is where JESSE puts it down via podcast. Peep his archives.

JESSE THORN was moderating a forum discussing online branding. One of the speakers was a guy named MERLIN MANN, who JESSE called the actual internet celebrity. *zing*. There was also a dude from AdultSwim.com which is like the only reason I would ever watch a television. After the forum I rode shotgun with JESSE and got a free lunch out of iTunes. After lunch there was more politicking to do with the folks that organized the whole event.

JESSE is huge on the radio. From National Public Radio to satellite broadcasts JESSE’s a pro and he is on the frontline of podcasting. This is something I need to get into like right now. If the iC’s start podcasting I think that will bridge the gaps between our video releases. The idea is to expand our brand through other forms of media. I met a lot of people that can help me do just that but what they all need is to see more content. The story of my life.

The afternoon took off when we made a trip to the Adult Swim offices. I almost creamed my jeans when we met one of the editors from ‘Squidbillies’. The offices were surprisingly tame and quiet from what I would have imagined them to look like. Sure, there was a compliment of action figures all around as well as Jolly Ranchers at the front desk, but where were all the people swinging from the rafters shooting Nerf guns at each other?

At the end of the day the Williams Street offices of Adult Swim are all about production and law and order. And whoever gets out of line will have to deal with Assy McGee.

Chocolate Snowflake took me to the movies the other night to see a flick I have been raving about called ‘Coraline’. It is based on a story written by NAIL GAIMAN [ll]. It focuses on a plucky little girl who finds herself in a serious fix and she has to use her wits and her courage to get herself out of trouble.

The movie is filmed in stop-motion claymation animation similar to the Rudolf Christmas stories and countless other features using the technique. The film is fun, adventurous and scary all at the same time and sometimes in the same scenes. If you are taking a child with you I would suggest the 8yrs old up to 12 y.o. demographic. They are old enough to handle some of the frightful scenes and young adult themes that are being conveyed.

The real reason that I brought C.S. was so that she could help me figure out how to win these exclusive Nike Dunks that are being offered at the Coraline website. Nike has limited the giveaway to only 1000 pairs so for all I know they may have already dispensed them out to lucky people. They had me the second I saw the box they were being issued in.

Hand-stitching. Decorative lace-stays. What appears to be some serious materials on the uppers. These joints are the sickest Dunks to drop in a long while. Word on the street is that they are already being offered for more than $500 a pair from some of the re-sellers on the web.

The moral of ‘Coraline’ is to be careful what you ask for because it might not be worth having it once you got it. I do want these Dunks though.

Just not enough to replace my eyes with buttons.

Eastbound & Down For The Count…

eb & d

How do you have a show called Eastbound & Down and you DON’T play the anthem for trucker trash culture? That’s a fail off the bat.

The second strike is all this hype about a baseball sitcom and then NO baseball. What is the deal with that?

The third strike was the writing which might have been on strike at the time. You are fucking out Eastbound & Down.

The good thing for you guys is that there are nine innings.

The truth about television show premieres is that they are often less hit and more miss. Home Box Office however has a ridiculous track record for their original programming so you can expect at minimum a certain level of entertainment. Where their series ‘Flight of the Conchords’ is smart, and unassuming in its wit, ‘Eastbound & Down’ is predictable with its punchlines. I’m not saying thats a bad thing at all, but HBO has spoiled us rotten with quirky, hilarious shit like LARRY DAVID’s ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’. Its a little weird for me to find myself giving a shit about Kenny Powers who is the lead character in ‘Eastbound & Down’. CYE’s Larry made his selfishness and stupidity amusing. EB & D’s Kenny Powers is just grating.

The same people who brought us shit like ‘Talladega Nights’ and ‘Step Brothers’ along with the same actor who featured in ‘Tropic Thunder’ and ‘Pineapple Express’ have teamed up to give us nothing like the hot shit I just mentioned. Where ‘Eastbound & Down’ fails is that the writing seems to have been set up for a laugh track. Characters aren’t just one dimensional. Some are non-dimensional. And I can’t force myself to laugh at a holograph. The writers need to sit down and decide what they want to do with this character who is supposedly a former major league player of the highest caliber all the while being a cretin of the lowest possible moral fiber.

I’m not saying that it can’t work, but someone needs to come in and refine the show. DANNY McBRIDE is funny as the lead even though he is working with some cliche’d bits. The show should have dealt with his downward spiral from the majors. Kenny Powers should have been that guy that snorted cocaine off a stripper’s ass cheek. That is the outrageous the show needed as opposed to showing us a nude shot of McBride in the shower at the middle school his character is supposed to be teaching at. Nude shots and profanity are all golden when they are done right, but when they are done wrong, they are just gold-plated like the slum jewelry on Jamaica Avenue.

I’m going to give ‘Eastbound & Down’ at least one more shot because the creative team behind Funny Or Die has to still have some funny left inside of them. Also because my folks from Cornerstone Marketing make sure that I stay invited to shit that I love with no reservation. If ‘Eastbound & Down’ doesn’t make it to sweeps week (does cable even give a fuck about that shit?) don’t blame DP dot com. Blame the fact that JERRY REED’s theme song from ‘Smokey & The Bandit’ was nowhere to be heard.
