Editor’s note: SFU goes in from the land down under once again. DJ Pinky brings us his adventures as a sneaker fiend visiting Melbourne to satisfy his soul in his quest for rubber soles.

Ah, it’s Saturday morning (I DJ’d the club last night and got home @ 6am) and I woke up to my son whispering to me to wake up… So it’s 11am and I got stuff all sleep and my fiance(who is 20 odd weeks pregnent with our daughter) had a restless night as she does every night, but cos she love me and understands my obsession for sneakers we headed up to Melbourne to the Niketown factory sale. Turns out there was a sale on top of a sale and a massive line like they were lining up for concert tickets.

So we waited in line and found out they had 40% off the already reduced sale price…HOLY SHIT!. (explains the line) We only had to line up for like 15 min or so which was not bad, we got into the “NIKE MAD HOUSE” and went straight to the kicks and yeah I picked up a couple of pairs, but these ones are the best I think, they’re AF1 supreme max air, the colourway is crazy cool, fluro with the grey/chrome and they have some printing on the inner sole(AF1-25, AF1-20, 5-AF1)

So a couple of weeks after that trip up to NIKETOWN we headed up to Melbourne again for a birthday lunch and I had heard that Niketown was having a sale (40% again) on their back wall kicks (the stock that there is only a couple of pairs left or weird sizes and shit) and I remembered from last time I was there that there were a couple of of pairs I wanted so I had to go check them out…

Aahhh this time I found one pair on the back wall and one pair on the samples shelf. I got this sweet pair of Dunks – Year of the pig, pink on pink on pink (pink is punk) for $70AUS and also these Sky force Mid’s (i dubbed them silver surfers) from the sample shelf they were $40AUS…

The Slaughterhouse Studio Sessions…

slaughterhouse

I’m glad that the Slaughterhouse collective of Royce da’ 5-9, Crooked I, Joe Budden and Joell Ortiz was not just a marketing gimmick. The works that these four artists might create collaboratively could be the best shit we have heard in a long time and I have heard some great shit all year long. I loved 808’s and the Renaissance. Rising Down was my shit as well as the Mixtape About Nothing. D.I.R.T. was, in a word, grimey. There is so much good music all around me when it comes to listening to rap, yet still and all, I want to hear that Slaughterhouse shit.

This is why I made my way to the studio in a blizzarded out NYC. I was offered food and drink by the host, but the real draw was to sit in a session with Joell Ortiz and Joe Budden. When artists are serious with their shit and dedicated to their craft it is a privilege to watch them work. It helps you focus as well. I know Joe Budden is dead serious because he got to the studio early. In the blizzard. A host of other folks came through as well. Statik Selektah dropped off some beats on his way to see the Rakim set at Knitting Factory. There was also a reporter there from some German smut mag posing as a Hip-Hop periodical. Some shit called HHNOISE.

You can’t tell me that German mag isn’t pr0n. Germans are the dudes who created the whole world of 2girls-1cup. Like everything else they do Germans get all serious about their shit.

Do you know how many wack beats that rappers have to listen to? Millions. Possibly billions. Maybe even trillions. Damn, I don’t know how these dudes maintain the motivations to rap after reviewing the soulless bullshit from a thousand wanna-be producers. The best still find a way to deliver that good shit. Joell Ortiz and Joe Budden are two of the best around. They are only half of Slaughterhouse collective but they are twice as good as any other two rappers holding the microphone right now. The track they laced that night has the title ‘Move On’.

It was an interesting night as I watched these dudes take a blank canvas and paint their very own portraits of their lives. I have a newfound respect for rappers now too. Anyone that can come to the studio and focus themselves to compose lyrics while everyone around them is staring at the pen and pad in their hand is not only a genius but hardbody as well. These are the types of dudes that want the ball in their hands for the forth quarter or the overtime session.

[ll] to any man wanting the ball in his hands.

Here are a few videos from the session…

The Rise Of The Red-Shirted Freshmen…

donny goines

The X-spot is going hard with their story about the Freshmen 10 of 2008. I ain’t even gonna lie when I tell you that 10 motherfuckers trying to come up at once is too much. Some of the dudes that read this might feel some kind of way like Tupac stans always catch feelings but the truth is that the music industry in regards to rap dudes just can’t support 10 new stars. The machinery, and more importantly the fanbase needs to allow some of these acts some more time to get their artistic weight up.

To use a sports metaphor, some of these rappers need to be red-shirted. I say this because there are some artists whose gifts are wasted in this climate of now-now-yesterday. It forces artists to churn out work to fast and it also makes their work less valuable in the eyes of consumers. Why should I listen to some rapper’s latest track if he is gonna do another one next week, or even tomorrow? I’m not tryinf to be the dude that holds people back from their dreams in as much as I want dudes to realize their potential.

It’s hard to tell people to let their shit marinate because tomorrow is granted to none of us. At the same time if we don’t plan for tomorrow we won’t be prepared when that new day comes, and trust me, the new day is coming. I created this drop with a few particular artists in mind. These dudes are on the cusp of something special for themselves and I think they all will present something unique to rap and hip-hop culture. They aren’t part of the XXL 2008 freshmen 10 but I think you will hear from them hardbody in 2009.

Donny Goines – Right now, Donny Goines might be the hardest working dude in rap music. He has leveraged his persistence on the internets with a debut album. This is no small achievement since the majority of the freshmen 10 are loaded with mixtape credibility but without completed albums. The CD is called ‘Minute After Midnight‘ and it features production from some reliable beatmakers as well as up and coming producers (who hopefully won’t become rappers). My favorite track on the album is called ‘I Am Moving’ and it was produced by Dame Grease.

Another cat I fuck with who is connected with Donny Goines is Panama a.k.a. The Spanish Kid. He was formerly on ‘The Wire’ as the dude who used to wear Bubbles ass out [ll]. In a few years Panama will be one of the “Raptors” that we all talk about. The good thing is that he respects the craft of rhyming and he wants to be viewed as an official MC. He also has the work ethic that will take him far. These dudes didn’t make the cover of XXL’s 2008 freshmen 10, but just like a blue chip prospect in college football they are getting red-shirted so that their career will be even longer.

PARTY MONSTER!

niketown

Here’s all you need to know about me… I would rather nerd out than freak out. I have done both. Nerding out is more rewarding for me and less embarrassing, which is a reward in itself. Nerding out is comfortable and calm, even when the scene appears chaotic.

I left my day job too late to do everything on my “Wednesday is the new Fr’aturday” list. No Vibe Mag JAMIE FOXX party and no beer pong with B Real from Cypress Hills. I need to apologize to NoHa from DuckDown for holding me down on that joint. Yo Noha, the next event you have (preferably with Sean P or Kidz-N-The Hall) is all me fam.

I did make it to Niketown for their Playmakers holiday event. The party was hosted by Miss Info who is always on some fresh to def shit. I peeped the 18k gold cap she had on her pre-molar tooth. That shit is so classic ‘hood that 99% of the people don’t even know what they are looking at. I know though, because I am an old motherfucker. I’m just thankful that these young kids on the scene fucks with me.

niketown

The kids still fucks with Clark Kent too and that is because he has more kicks than they will ever own. Clark gives away more sneakers than they will ever own. I fucks with Clark too even though he can be a little like Ernie P sometimes when he is discussing some shit he doesn’t fucks with too tough. Clark don’t like these blogs too much and I can’t blame him since most bloggers never come up from their parent’s basements.

I came up from my parent’s basement though and I hung the fuck out. Peace to 40 Diesel from Mighty Healthy. Peace to Joey2fresh who was taking pictures all over the place. Shout to the homey J-Rod as well as DJ Ko who goes in to all the fly shit. Do y’all want some more? Okayplayer holiday party 2nite featuring the Roots and friends.

Challah for Chanukah and the Challadays bitches.

BLU CHEEZ TV x Premium Laces…

tye dye dunks

During the Sneaker Fiends Unite NYC Tour we visited a shop in lower Manhattan owned by a fellow sneaker fiend.

PETE owns Premium Laces in SoHo.

His passion for collecting is what makes his shop a special place for the rest of us sneaker heads. It isn’t simply the exclusive products that the store carries but the ideal that this hobby should be accessible AND affordable.

Pete was kind enough to take the time out from serving customers to politic with me about all things sneaker related.
