The ‘Cats Ran Wild…

Salutes to the NCAA Champion Kentucky Wildcats.

Shouts to LM for winning the NCAA pool. This is the 3rd or 4th DP.com pool that LM has won. He stays winning so much it makes me wonder if he was the dude from Maryland with the winning Mega Millions ticket?

I actually came in last place of all the poolers who submitted picks. That’s pretty rad if you ask me. Here’s what the final breakdown looked like. Thanks for playing Internets.

Delancey Street Homecoming…

Monday, April 2nd, 2012

I can’t even stress enough how much I appreciate Reebok for giving me the opportunity to host an event at their space off Delancey Street. This night was like a homecoming for me. I was back on Delancey Street where my sneaker fiending first began more than 25 years ago.

Classic.

Salutes to Combat Jack and the whole crew from the Combat Jack Show who fell thru the event to support the kid. All my dudes held me down hardbody tho’. Premium, Solace, Aqua, ‘Naud, Dave, Jayson, Hobbs, J.Nicholson, Billy Anthony, Chad Wells…

Everybody!

Thanks to Cole for being my intern. DallasPenn.com never had an intern before. We still don’t know what to do with our intern, but we gonna put her to work. It ain’t gonna be free kicks every time Cole. LOL.

Big up to Sean Malcolm aka DJ Profile from King Magazine who came thru and held down the sound system hardbody.

Esso and his band Beatsro rocked the gallery with a mini set. Basquiat’s spirit was definitely in the air.

The whole night was classic. Thanks Reebok.

New Balance: Made In America…

Monday, April 2nd, 2012

I crashed this in-store party at the New Balance spot on Fifth Avenue. Instead of eating food and drinking wine I fuxed with the sneakers. I’m at the Jedi level of open bar (obama) events that I can’t even get down with the swill unless its one of my top drinks. I’m just really into sneakers too.

New Balance is one of those brands that will make the best products around and because they won’t play the hype machine game that other manufacturers play you won’t know what you are missing. I can sit here and drop a litany of New Balance styles that just shit on other brands with their construction and durability.

Even with their high profile collaborations, New Balance still remains the anti-hypebeast sneakerhead shoe because they aren’t pouring money into promoting their shoes. If you know the deal then you already know. Otherwise, you better ask somebody what’s fuxin’ with the ‘N’. Nobody.

The Dopp Stays Scheming…

Sunday, April 1st, 2012

You can tell the cats who went to South By Southwest and were invigorated to stay in the music biz marathon. The Doppelgangaz had just come back home from a swing thru Europe before they drove all the way down to Texas. The Dopp is setting up their next project titled ‘Beats For Brothels vol.2’. This is another album I’m highly anticipating in 2012.

The Doppelgangaz are on the verge of something a lot bigger than you might expect. Even the homey Combat Jack is starting to see the light coming from these brothers. Catch this wave early Internets so you don’t get sharked out.

Downtown 2012…

It was all a dream…

A few months back I got an e-mail from a rep at Reebok who had seen a TWit I posted about how I thought the Reebok Basquiat’s were dope. I honestly liked the collaboration because it didn’t look forced or contrived. The shoes actually made me look at Reebok a little differently.

I also received an e-mail from a rapper named Esso. He’s been around for a minute and he’s someone I like as a person altho’ I hadn’t fully connected to him musically. Esso is a talnted dreamer tho’. I can’t forget about the project he did to pay homage to the 25th anniversary of Thriller, and then M.J. passed away a few months later, but right before the release of the project.

Good for Esso that he didn’t let crossed stars deter him from his path. Esso kept making his art and this time he had a project which was inspired by an iconic NYC artist. Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Esso had sent me the link to his ‘Son Of SAMO’ mixtape. SAMO (say mo) was the graff alias of Basquiat and a fellow artist. Basquiat thought he could challenge the art scene by being provacative and subversive. Mainly tho’, he was trying to find his place in the world. Aren’t we all?

I thought I could find my place by creating a dynamic visual document to one of Esso’s tracks while placing him in a pair of Reebok’s Basquiat sneakers. Art. Commerce. Fashion. Consumption. Music. Blackness. All the things that I have dropped science on since this website has been online.

All of these concepts will come together on Thursday evening when I host the premiere of Esso’s ‘Death Do Us’ music video and live performance at the Reebok Classics Space in NYC’s infamous Lower East Side.

If you are in NYC on Thursday, March 29th, please stop by 145 Orchard Street at 7pm and celebrate this life with me and Esso. The journey never stops Internets, I’m so glad you could come along for the ride.
