DILLA CHANGED MY LIFE…

Sunday, February 12th, 2012

February is already a melancholy month when you think about the passing of J Dilla, but Please Don’t Stare and Hip-Hop Is Read bring some levity back into our hearts with this Dilla tribute mixtape using some of JayDee’s favorite sample source classics.

Thanks Dilla, and thank you Ben-hameen and Ivan Rott for keeping the legacy alive.

The Southpaw countdown clock is ticking.

Action Bronsolino and Brooklyn’s own Mr. MuthaF’N eXquire take the stage to salute the venerable Hip-Hop institution on her passing.

Perhaps the homey Action Bronson will rapsing ‘Dear Heather’ as a pre-ValentiMe’s Day treat to all the ladies in the building?

Brooklyn’s Finest…

The Brooklyn Museum of Art’s 1st Saturday event hasn’t been THIS popping in several years. I mean yeah, it pops off every month, but this time it was SPECIAL.

Firstly, my brothers in Game Rebellion were doing a set in the glass bowl. The glass framed lobby entrance at the front of the museum was never this beautiful as when the Rebels rolled thru. But before the show even started I was up in the building making some art of my own.

Esso let me shoot him for a video to his song ‘Death Do Us’ off the ‘Son of SAMO‘ EP.

I know you see that Reebok x Basquiat swag.

The Game Rebellion show was swagged out with all kinds of shiny accessories and shit. Eyewear by Coco & Breezy and metal couture from PNC Radio’s own LaureLuxe. With just the kind of fine ass arm candy that real rockstars require.

You know Game Rebellion goes hard from years of appearing on this webpage but until you catch them live and direct you won’t understand how dope they really are. You’re in luck Internets. Game Rebellion will be performing at Highline Ballroom on February 26th. Be there.

The Rebels rocked the Brooklyn Museum as if it were a homecoming celebration. Actually, it was. The band was formed in Brooklyn and has been a real part of the Black art continuum taking place in NYC and laser focused in the boro of kings(and pharoahs).

I’m pretty sure the fusty old Brooklyn Museum never had a mosh pit before, but then again Game Rebellion never put it down in here until now. This was one of my favorite performances from them in all the years I’ve fuxed with them. Nothing mattered to them about the space, the sound, whatever. They just rocked. Hardbody.

The Game Rebellion performance would have been good enough for me on most days, but on 1st Saturday there was still some more dancing to do in the Beaux Arts ballroom. Brothers flashed off their fancy footwork and floor moves. As you might imagine there was also a Soul Train line and the Brooklyn Circus even staged a fashion show.

Don’t get it twisted, the fräuleins from Germany dig the kid’s dance moves.

The sartorial swag brothers were in full effect too. The Brooklyn Museum of Art 1st Saturday event is STILL the place to be after 12 years of putting it down on Eastern Parkway.

The Brooklyn Museum of Art 1st Saturday is the place to go if you want to meet someone worth marrying. This is where Chocolate Snowflake and I shared our first dance together. I’m surprised that I still have to tell people to come to the Museum if they want to meet something sweet and good to eat. LMAO

The BEST part of the night was seeing my younger brother Boo in the building. Boo is one of the few people on the scene who calls me by my family name. You can’t imagine how refreshing it is to hear that in this crowd of thousands. I also appreciate the fact Boo has taken all my lessons in lifestyle and made them work for his own swag.

Okay Boo, I see you fam. Redboned arm candy and a vintage Montreal fitted? Swag! But the PRL overcoat is FIYAHVERKX!!!

Salute The Underdog…

Just before the Knicks season totally hits the skids Coach Mike D’Antoni reached out one last desperate time.

You know dude was desperate since he was tabbing the end of the bench for the undrafted Ivy league point guard Jeremy Lin.

Lin usually makes his appearances when the games are pretty much already in the loss column for the Knicks, but not lastnite… Instead he carried the Knicks above the threshold of absolute mediocrity the Nets are mired in. With his points, assists and rebounds Lin might just have put himself in the starting line up?

Ha!
