Big City Of Dreams…

The good folks over at Who Walk In Brooklyn were nice enough to mail me a preview copy of their book ‘New York Calling’ which is a compendium of essays and anecdotes relayed by some of New York’s best journalists. Not the most famous flatfoot scribes, but certainly some of the most entertaining.

New York Calling‘ is strong because it is primarily a look at New York City from life long New Yorkers. There’s some whimsy contained in the reminiscence, but there is always the lens of reality that the words are filtered through. I’m going to develop some interesting projects in the short term from some of the essays I’ve read in this book. Thanks again to the WWIB posse.

‘New York Calling’ makes me realize how much I take for granted every day regarding whats left of New York City that remains under my feet.

Peeking outside of the wire mesh fence you can see the venerable Bronx County Courthouse. This building is a fantastic example of the Beaux Arts design that was used to create some of New York City’s everlasting landmarks like the archways at Washington Square Park and Grand Army Plaza. Grand Central Station has one of the most beautiful Beaux Arts facades in the city, but who has ever seen the outside of Grand Central?

This building has always seemed to me to be more grandiose than anything it could have been used. A public building? Nahh, this was a mansion or a castle that the king of New York lived inside of. I was always enthralled with the statuary of these types of buldings. Were the carved limestone figures sentries that protected the sancticity of these building? Why else would they then have swords and shields if they weren’t placed there to back people the fuck down?

Those weren’t just the ruminations of a child passing through New York City with his head to the sky. I loved this building as an adult who passed by it very often on my way to working on other municipal projects in New York City’s most disenfranchised borough. If Staten Island was forgotten then the Bronx was outright ignored. Even during the go-go economic boom of the Clinton-era (error?) the Bronx still remained the step-child of the five boroughs.

Buildings like the courthouse were in woeful states of disrepair and negligence. Part of the thinking for administrators surely has to be the idea of fixing up buildings for a populace of the nation’s poorest per capita. Would the people even appreciate having a building like this one converted into a multi-use community center? The old courthouse sits at the intersection of 161st Street and Third Avenue. Slightly to the west of this landmark on 161st and River Ave sits a billion dollar cathedral to baseball.

As the Bronx slowly revitalizes itself Lady Justice patiently awaits her makeover.

Giving Pirates A Good Name Again…

The Pittsburgh Pirates are doing their best to undo the besmirching of the word “pirate” that is taking place thanks to those poverty stricken folks in Somalia. Maybe ANDY VAN SLYKE and DAVE PARKER can petition the national press to rename the Somali thieves as “corsairs”? Or does that sound too swashbuckling? The Tunisians might take umbrage with that term as well.

Baseball season is back in effect party people. I’m shutting down my skittish reportage of the Association because the Knicks are so damn woeful, plus I’m not feeling this media coronation of LeBRON JAMES. Baseball is going to be my new girlfriend this summer. And why not? She loves catching balls in her mitt [[ll]]

It’s still early enough in the season to believe that everybody has a chance to be the champions. Despite my Mets losing their new stadium inauguration to the Padres I will still ride with them to win the NL East this season. JOHAN SANTANA is the effin’ truth on the mound and FRANCISCO RODRIGUEZ deserves to have the Public Enemy song ‘Shut ‘Em Down’ played every time he steps on the hill. Here’s how I see the league shaping up this season…

NL EAST
Mets (winner)
Phillies (wild card)

NL CENTRAL
Pirates (winner)

NL WEST
Dodgers (winner)

AL EAST
Red Sox (winner)

AL CENTRAL
Twins (winner)
Royals (wild card)

AL WEST
Angels (winner)

I have every right to revise this list in June prior to the All-Star break and in July after the non-waiver trading deadline. For all of you folks who lack a cable provider like I do I suggest you log on to MLB Gameday over on the MLB.com website. Gameday allows you to follow baseball games in progress with a pitch by pitch by play account. It’s like having your computer fill in your scorecard for you so that you can do the important stuff like DL internets pr0n.

SEPARATED @ BIRTH: Jew Man…

jew men

Well looky here, the Supremacy Chronicle, er, the New York Times has a little article about the quaint dilemma that some congregations of Jews are facing by trying to integrate themselves within Jewish organizations.

That’s kind of silly to me.

If you are already blue why would you want to make yourself teal?

Blue-ish?

Does the persimmon want to be a fig?

Hell no!

Maybe if someone had told the persimmon it was poison then maybe the persimmon wouldn’t appreciate the skin it was in, but the persimmon isn’t as dumb as people are and the persimmon recognizes how good it is.

The persimmon doesn’t pretend to be greater than the fig either but please understand that this is because the persimmon is much smarter than we humans are.

The persimmon never created a make believe genus to separate itself from the fig since they both come from the Earth and ultimately return there again.

But like I said before, the persimmon is smarter than us humans.

Don’t be teal, aqua, cyan or blueish for Passover.

Be true blue, and be proud because you are royalty.

Mass Producing Mass Murder…

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

If you really honestly think about it, a dude from China who is fully assimilated into American culture is the deadliest man on Earth. First off, he comes from the culture that first created mass production over two thousand years ago. And secondly, he has adopted the traits of the culture that specializes in wholesale homicide.

America is like the CostCo for murder. We place poor people on top of one another and then make them scramble for crumbs. We place a greater value on material possession than we do on people. We use our governance infrastructure to steal wealth from one another. And to top everything off we indoctrinate children with the ideas of cheap life through mass media be it the cinema or video gaming.

Party people, we are fucked the fuck up. I would tell you to put on your seatbelt on because the ride is about to get rougher. At least I got the soundtrack for this shit.
