messengers

It is often the artists from the most disenfranchised, impoverished nations that can speak to the true nature of Hip-Hop. To combine all music, art, culture and people into one is the essence of Hip-Hop. With the use of the drum and the voice.

A few weeks ago when J.Period was working on the Bring Your Own Blogger BBQ mixtapes he told me of this project to combine the sound of K’Naan with some of the world’s most respected musical messengers. K’Naan hails from Mogadishu, Somalia. A region that has been embroiled in violent conflict for the past two decades. So many rappers fantasize about their communities as warzones but few have survived in one and even less speak of the peace, justice and love that our world needs right now.

With this idea in mind J.Period and K’Naan began crafting this project. A mashup mixtape with music honoring the great FELA KUTI, BOB DYLAN and BOB MARLEY. The project sounded too monumental from the outset. I’m glad J.Period was able to pull it off.

The full 3-part project is set to be released on September 1st over at J.Period’s website. Here’s a preview of what J.Period is calling ‘The Messengers’ featuring K’Naan in tribute to FELA KUTI, BOB DYLAN and BOB MARLEY.

1st dynasty

Two thousand years ago the Chinese emperor commissioned an army of warriors to follow fim into the after life to do battle with his enemies. The warriors were impressive for their scale, quantity and their design. Two thousand years ahead of the industrial revolution in the west China had already begun their industrial EVOLUTION. At the end of the day can you create something that forever changes the landscape around you?

Method Man, Raekwon, Inspectah Deck – ‘C.R.E.A.M.’

Wu-Tang’s place in the Hip-Hop canon should be secured by this point, but as true artists they don’t retire from creating new art, to be dissected, criticized and hopefully enjoyed. I might have been one of the few listeners around these parts that enjoyed the 8 Diagrams album from the Wu. It was an evolved sound from RZA, but it still contained the undeniable Wu elements. Wu-Tang makes music that is like triumphant marching anthems.

Raekwon, GZA, RZA, Masta Killa – ‘Rushing Elephants’

Method Man, Inspectah Deck, RZA, GZA – ‘Stick Me For My Riches’

Listening to these recent tracks featuring Wu members I don’t see any erosion in their skillsets or in their ability to create content describing elements of streetlife and lyrical swordmanship. Wu-Tang is still that supergroup that sets the gold standard for what can be achieved. This is what SlaughterHouse is going to try to recreate in a small window of time and space. It isn’t even fair to the SlaughterHouse collective to make comparisons at this point.

Redman, Raekwon, Method Man, Ghostface Killah – ‘4 Minutes 2 Lockdown’

America’s Killing Fields…

mexico

America’s insatiable lust for cocaine is what has caused over 1300 murders this year so far in the Mexican border town Ciudad Juarez. That number is almost six times the amount of homicides committed here in New York City this year. Ciudad Juarez population is 2 million and NYC’s is 10 million.

Gunmen kill 8 at bar in Mexican border city

What’s the connection with a shitload of dollar bills in Washington D.c. showing trace amounts of cocaine on them and all of these murders inside Mexico? The demand is obviously fueling the supply. I don’t know who in D.C. is getting skeed up off the sneedle, but whoever they are there is blood on their hands. Mexico in 2009 has become similar to America’s crack infested ghettos from 1989.

The drug trade is too profitable and too formidable to be denied. The drug trade in Mexico has seeped into the social structure at every level. The cartels are becoming legitimate industries as they diversify their trades and expand their rackets. There is only one law now in Mexico. There is no law. There are only the cartels. Big fish eating smaller fish. Well, big fish shooting smaller fish to death. Then eating it.

Moral of the story…

Sniff cocaine with African currency.

Africa can’t get any more fucked the fuck up.
