ROOTS PICNIC = SOULED OUT…

roots

So effin’ amazing is the only description that comes to my mind to describe the Roots picnic here in Philadelphia this weekend. I can’t even run off all the acts that blessed the two stages inside of the venue, but I will try to give credit to all of those that made the event the best concert I have ever been to. The show was so epic that I have to place it above the twentieth anniversary of the Mothership Connection which was held in Central Park and featured GEORGE CLINTON, BOOTSY COLLINS, BERNIE WORRELL, Parliament, Funkadelic, Parlet, De La Soul, Q-Tip and I was high off a mushroom button.

Yeah, it was THAT good.

My homeys TERRENCE and TAHIR made the trek from BK with their lovely ladies as well. So even though I was with Chocolate Snowflake I managed to still dip off and get my mind right. Shouts to OKayPlayer who has held me down at all the Roots Jam Sessions at the Highline Ballroom. Through those folks I was introduced to the people from 215 Magazine who rep Philly all day every way. 215 Mag got me the media credentials.

*Internets, press credentials kick ass. Writing is one of the worst paying jobs in the history of bad paying jobs, but every now and again you get a press credential and the world of craft services is at your fingertips. You will need the free food to power you through the entire day. Cargo pants are for stuffing cold cuts in the pockets.*

The Roots opened the entire concert with a mini-set. How sick are these dudes that they even open up for… THEMSELVES?!?

I’ve never seen Santigold before and she fucking rocks.

Asher Roth was pretty good also. Quiet as its kept, but this was the first time I saw Asher Roth perform live. Asher had the West Chester cargo shorts mob riding with him hardbody through his whole set.

Son went for his in a LARRY BIRD jersey and a pair of flip-flops. I had to laugh at that. Asher keeps his stoner steez on 100.

cudi

Plain Pat what up?

Kid Cudi brought the heat for his set also. Literally and figuratively. He was rocking a pair of black Air Yeezys.

I fux with that track off the Man On The Moon mixtape ‘Is There Any Love’. That shit is a banger. The ‘Day N Nite’ OG track and the Crookers remix had everyone bouncing.

No shots because Asher Roth is my dude, but Cudi’s set was tighter [ll]. They both had the right energy though. I’m gonna catch them again when their tour blows through my town. Going on the road for a stretch should get their stage weight up.

Amanda Diva is pretty and smart. She should do something in the music industry. Amanda, can I haz ur potato salad?

Antibalas is this jazzy, soulful, worldbeat, almost orchestra. I don’t want to tell you that they rock because what they do is deeper than rock. Antibalas rocks though with guitars, horns, percussion and this insane African dude out front.

roots

I missed the Black Keys because I took a deuce in the Port-a-potties. Hard fucking body. When I came out of the toilet DJ Cash Money was doing a Wu-Tang tribute. I dare you to say that you don’t get batshit crazy when ‘Shimmy Shimmy Ya’ comes on over the speakers. That track is the most official license to ill.

Public Enemy, backed by the Roots and Antibalas performed their album ‘It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back’. Two words… Str8 insanity.

p.e.

The Roots picnic is a tremendous bellwether for so many things. Asher Roth, Kid Cudi, and Santigold are that next-next shit. I think all three of them will be in the business of making music for a good long time.

The Roots picnic also gave me a chance to see Philadelphia again in a new and different light. That city is once again rebuilding itself with a signature sound played by musicians who have dedicated their lives to their craft.

Why haven’t you seen the Roots perform live? What do you have against Hip-Hop? As usual, white people have to save Hip-Hop for the rest of the people that don’t truly believe in Black superheroes.

DP asks “Where R U Yeezy?!?” in the city of brotherly love.

[ll], and definitely no fishsticks.

In every city there have been campouts for this series of sneakers. Despite the economic stagnation across the nation the lines of people willing to stand outside for several days, even in the rain, has not subsided. You might can call these sneakers recession proof. The folks I chop it up with in Philadelphia are possibly the most passionate collectors I have met to date.

I’m starting to see that the campout culture is the zenith of sneaker collecting.

Philadelphia reminds me in some instances of New York City but they can be on their own special shit out here.

I need the subways to move me around NYC late at night.

The SEPTA subway system in Philadelphia shuts down before 1am so if you haven’t made your move by that time you are assed the fuck out.

philly

The SEPTA subway system is distinctly less subterranean than NYC’s joint.

Natural light gets to filter into the stations more than in New York so you don’t feel so buried and claustraphobic.

philly

^ Grilch still prevails at some of the North Philly stations.

The Reading Terminal Market is every foodlovers wet dream, and even some bears.

Can you imagine being the bear that comes up on a salmon like this one?

philly

Fresh cut salmon can not be fucked with.

At least until the CIA makes some shit called salmon flu.

philly

OMG!

The Reading Terminal Market is the spot.

Foodies Unite!

philly

Nothing in the world is better than one single delicious cookie.

After a couple of days in Philly I have found that the sights are fantastic and the food is even better.

I can’t wait to get back to Philly.

L.A. Makes It Rain On Philadelphia…

The reigning MLB champs are hurting in the bullpen and on the field.

All-Star shortstop JIMMY ROLLINS and closer BRAD LIDGE haven’t been getting their jobs done this season.

The Phillies still have the second best record in the major leagues.

Second only to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Wait until he’s back in the game.

The Philadelphia Experiment…

The entire DallasPenn.com staff is in the city of brotherly love this weekend for the Roots picnic. The staff would be Chocolate Snowflake and myself. I was granted press access to the picnic and a few art gallery invites through the city so check out some of the sights and scenes that I upload this weekend as I go a little deeper into the legendary city.

Philadelphia is an interesting town. It’s definitely a metropolis, but it still has a quaintness type quality. Like it didn’t want to get too big for its britches, or conversely, its bridges. There’s definitely a southern flavor to Philadelphia. Maybe it was the politeness of folks that heard me ask for directions and quickly offered their expertise. I like Philly for that.

What really attracts me to Philadelphia though is that it moves like a working class city. New York was like this too, but now with all the tourists and the movie sets I don’t even recognize my home sometimes. Mostly I can’t afford my home. Do you know how rich I have to be just to be POOR in NYC? Makes me wanna holler sometimes.

truck

I also came out to Philly to do some work. To peep out the the scene and get up with some of the folks that represent the blue collar ethos that has come to symbolize Philly’s grind. Truck North from the Roots collective got at me and invited me to come to his studio office and preview some of the new tracks he was working on. Truck North just released the Truck Jewels mixtape through OKayPlayer and he is steady working on his next project.

Truck and his ace producer Bear-1 are coming with that classic soul filled boom bap that I almost think is dead sometimes until I hear it again. I am going to start making formal petitions to see if I can get Truck North and Sean Price to do a song together. I think their styles complement each other well. I made some video while in the studio with these dudes as well and I will try to roll that out before I leave Philly. In the meantime listen to this track Bear-1 produced titled ‘Never Ending Flip’ off the Truck Jewels mxtape.

bear

Truck North is clearly a descendant of the Philadelphia rhymesayers that have preceded him. His flow is complex but it isn’t too wordy either. I like this track ‘Never Ending Flip’ because it the type of rap that describes real life on the daily in every hood. That guitar sample is hardrock shit too. Rap music is blues at its core. It’s about your reality and how you cope with the shit you see around you everyday. These are the stories that Truck North wants to tell. Inside the studio a bassline by Bear-1 shakes the walls like thunder. This is the perfect place to craft those griot tales.

Their studio office is just like my lab back in Freeport. Records, CD’s and other sampled resources are stacked all over the place. I don’t know what is in which pile but I’m sure Bear-1 knows where everything is. The studio is located in the back of a record store across the street from Temple. Sandwiched in between a barber shop, chinese food spot, a pizza joint and a pawn store. If that ain’t a working class ‘hood strip then I don’t know what is. While outside the record an impromptu cipher sparked up and some dude tried to sell us a bottle of laundry detergent.

I remember this strip well. This is where we used to post up back in the day after the Greek picnic at Fairmont park. The strip isn’t totally the hood any longer thanks to the money that Temple University has invested in the surrounding buildings, but the best part of Philly that I have always loved is how you only need to cross the street to be on the wrong corner.
