The $40Million Dollar Slave Syndrome

New York Times sports columnist, WILLIAM C. RHODEN, has done the knowledge on the history of Blacks and their impact on the landscape of the culture that is American sports. His book titled, ‘Forty Million Dollar Slaves’ gets it’s name from a statement that LARRY JOHNSON made after signing a lucrative contract for the then Charlotte Hornets. RHODEN opens up an important argument that even with the wealth and prosperity that some of these current athletes have achieved there has been little or no social progress gained from their exploits. RHODEN examines the social impact of MICHAEL JORDAN outside of his commercial potential.

I have to side with RHODEN on his argument that current athletes have no moral or social value landmarks that force them to be proactive in their community outside of the obligations that the franchise that pays them requires. There are tons of reasons for this, mainly, the breakdown of the family structure. With more women raising men by themselves we are seeing more men that think like women. Consumerism is valued much more than entrepreneurial ambition. The lynchpin, if you would excuse the term, of any progressive community is education. Without knowledge there will not be any empowerment. Education of athletes is eschewed for the most talented, therefore we create a class of wealthy imbeciles.

A fool and his money are soon parted.

CRIS CARTER: Almost Famous

First off, if any of y’all are traveling through the air do not get caught up in AirTran’s circus of bullshit. These humps are the cheapest fare for a reason. The customer service is wack, the stewardesses have track marks on their arms and they wear cheap wigs and the planes are always overbooked.

While I was flying to Atlanta last week I ran into CRIS CARTER, legendary wide receiver from the Minnesota Vikings. CRIS is a good dude and he stopped for a minute to chat with me. I always liked CRIS more than say, JERRY RICE, because he toiled away without complaints for all those years on those sucky Vikings teams.

Lo and behold, CRIS was flying to Atlanta on the same AirTran flight that I was on. This is how real the BUSH Administration economy is looking. Even a former NFL superstar has to watch his pennies now that his playing days are over. I saw the young lady that was accompanying CRIS and I realized that he may not make the Hall of Fame in Canton after all. Homegirl was not HOF caliber pussy. She was just aiight. Definitely hittable, but not on the level that you would expect for the second greatest receiver of all time. CRIS needs to have him some illmatic mulatto with real blonde hair and not that lace front jammy that homegirl was rocking.

If CRIS CARTER doesn’t step his broad game up I don’t see him getting into the Hall on a first ballot

BLACK DON’T CRACK IN BEISBOL

I am back at the beisbol theme for this week by dropping a post on some of the older players in the league who still have game. There was a time when 40 years old was ancient for an athlete. Now that everybody is drinking Red Bull and taking lord knows what else we are seeing athletes remain competitive until they are middle-aged.

There were always a few elite athletes who were viable stars into their forties. The great and legendary negro leaguer SATCHEL PAIGE wasn’t admitted into the major leagues until he was almost fifty so it’s not like the precedent wasn’t already established. SATCHEL played many a winter season in the Cuban leagues and it’s no small wonder to me that so many Cuban players are drinking that bottled water by PONCE de LEON. But it isn’t just Cuban players that have found the fountain of youth.

It’s just that it seems normal for more players to stay in the league well past the age that we would typically want to put them to pasture. What keeps them around is the fact that they are damn good. If a guy was a bum no team would keep him on their roster. Here’s a short list of a few of the old guys that I respect for keeping their game tight and their mind’s right.

bonds BARRY BONDS
Fuck the critics. Real recognize real. All the other “sluggers” from his era have broken down like GM cars. If MARK McGUIRE and BRADY ANDERSON were still in the league there wouldn’t be a media maelstrom about steroids. Blackness is unforgivable.

jose JOSE CONTRERAS
JOSE mught be the best Cuban pitcher since LUIS TIANT. There is something about crossing the oceam on a rubber tire that makes you stronger than Superman once you get to the U.S. mainland. BRIAN CASHMAN is hating himself every five days.

rickey RICKEY HENDERSON
He may have been blacklisted from returning to the majors, but trust me, he is still operating at a pro level in the Pacific League.

el duque ORLANDO ‘EL DUQUE’ HERNANDEZ
Yet another Cuban defect and an ageless wonder. El Duque’s inimitable delivery should have gotten lower by now, but he is still high kicking and getting wins in the bigs.

If I had a vote these two would both go in first ballot. All the issues notwithstanding, they never made a travesty of the sport by betting on games they were playing in. Lord knows how many times I’ve needed some uncut Colombian on a Monday morning after blogging for an entire weekend with no sleep.

The only difference between they and I is that the major leaguers can afford the drugs they take. If anybody would like to contribute to my drug habit blogging you can always PayPal me – bluecheese28@hotmail.com.
