REAL TALK – the history of the word ‘Nigger’ (ReMix)

state property

When I was born way back in 1970, the second week of February was called ‘Negro History Week’. I always thought that white gave us the second week of February because the great Republican president, Abraham Lincoln has a born day on the 12th.

Now that isn’t the exact origin of what we now call BLACK HISTORY MONTH but I do have a TRUE STORY for you.

The REAL TALK history of the word NIGGER.

The word nigger is a derivative of a German word, NEGGAR. The definition for this word is ‘plowman’. In farming, the plowman is the toughest, most back-breaking and menial task. The plowman has to drive the team of animals through the field. By the end of the day, the plowman is up to his knees in shit and animal piss. The indentured servants that were assigned this work by their feudal lords were expected to do their work in any weather and in any condition.

Fast forward to the settling of America. The colonists that were wealthy bought tracts of land and they brought their indentured servants with them to assist in farming the land. Upon completion of their term of servitude, the indentured servants would become landowners themselves. With vast areas of undeveloped land, the settlers needed more NEGGARS to help them clear forestry and till the soil. The indigenous peoples of America were little interested in helping the settlers and were actually more likely than not to slit the colonists throats while they slept.

The colonists needed a relatively cheap source of labor and manpower. In steps the great Mediterranean traders with their human chattel from central Africa. The colonists were so enthralled by the prospect of these workers because they understood agriculture and could withstand the oppressive humid climate in the southern colonies. The colonists had found their new NEGGARS. For simplicity and clarity purposes, Europeans like to name areas after the resource they extract from those regions. IVORY COAST, GOLD COAST and NIGER were names that were assigned to regions for the commodities they yielded.

The German word NEGGAR begat the African nation NIGER begat the American word NIGGER. The word NIGGER has nothing to do with the Latin word NEGRO any more than the word ‘axe’ shares the same meaning as the word ‘ask’. The name of the governor in California (Schwarze-Neggar) actually means Black-Plowman.

The point of all this info is that when you do the knowledge on this word you find that white called other white the word NIGGER even before they used it as a slur against Black folks. So please feel free to call any white that you know a NIGGER.

boycott

I wanted to put a few things into the atmosphere while they were fresh on my mind.

Rap music does not equal the sale of narcotics:
Although entertainment in general is a narcotic, the trade of cocaine, heroin, amphetamines, etc. has been far more disastrous to the fabric of the global family than rap music can ever be. There are so many orphaned and diseased children being raised by their grandmothers or worse because of drugs.

The psychological effect of narotics on the user is debilitation and depression caused by drug use dependency. Listening to CAM’RON may make you depressed but you will more than likely still be able to hold down your day job.

The physiological effects of narcotic usage speak for themselves. You would not want to be in the same room as a hard core heroin user. The smell would make you vomit. There has never been a rap record made that has made me not want to bathe for a month.

Rap music is not a game:
Rap music is a business which generates billions of dollars through the consumerism of various products not related to music. Rap stars sell sody pop, clothing, luxury cars and alcoholic beverages. All these items are non-investment grade and depreciate instantaneously the moment that the consumer takes possession.

I have yet to hear a rap star describe his investment portfolio other than his jewelry. I have yet to watch a commerial where a rap star will even promote the equipment that he uses to ply his trade. The last song that did this was D-NICE’s ‘The TR 808 Is Coming’ which was recorded nearly twenty years ago. The title refers to the Roland TR 808 device which helps producers create the various beats and rhythms that have been the backbone of Hip-Hop music since its beginnings.

If rap music were a game then there would be a clearly defined playing field. There would be limits and rules that govern the players’ behaviors. There would be penalties levied to players who did not adhere to these rules. And most af all, games have a finite timespan where players eventually run out of time.

Rap music is not the truth:
Despite all the credit that KANYE WEST received for his partially correct statement that, “GEORGE BUSH doesn’t care about Black people”, there has been no other truth in rap music. Rappers fabricate everything relating to their stage persona. At the time of this post all the following rappers have claimed to have been successful narcotics dealers prior to their entertainment careers, but none of them have been prosecuted federally or otherwise for what is regarded as a capital offense…

JAY-Z
NAS

CAM’RON
JIM JONES
JUELZ SANTANA

At some point you are going to have to decide what you want for your reality because you may not be content with the fantasy that has become mainstream rap music.

coonskin

SOUNDWAVE gave me this VHS before he went upstate and in my subsequent moves and my brief homelessness I lost my copy. It’s impossible to get from NetFlix since it hasn’t been licensed for DVD format.

You may not be a fan of animation but I would plead with you to give this film a chance. The technique that the filmmaker uses is offbeat and fascinating. The film stars SCATMAN CROTHERS, a young, slim BARRY WHITE and a post-teenage PHILIP MICHAEL THOMAS. All the actors are brilliant during their live action scenes and the dialogue throughout the animation is equally impressive.

The film begins with the attempted escape from prison of those three men. During their escape, SCATMAN CROTHERS tells the tale of BROTHER RABBIT. The storyline of the film centers around the BROTHER RABBIT character as he tries to hustle his way through the big city. The movie is as sharp a satire of the African American’s struggles as any of the best CHAPELLE’s SHOW sketches. The film is offensive to everyone who dislikes having their thoughts provoked.

If you need a real CHAPPELLE SHOW fix, go out and rent this tape. Hell, buy it if you can find it.

100 guns, 100 clips

It must be Black History Month again because the Birkenstocks at PBS have another one of their ‘once a year’ investigative documentaries to throw out to the peoples.

This years docu-poop is titled ‘Negros With Guns‘ and surprisingly, it has NOTHING to do with crap music. This piece is the story around little known activist and civil rights leader, ROBERT WILLIAMS, who urged African Americans to arm themselves against violent racists. In doing so, WILLIAMS not only challenged the Klan-dominated establishment of his hometown of Monroe, North Carolina, he alienated himself from the mainstream Civil Rights Movement, which advocated peaceful resistance.

As the leader of the Monroe chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), WILLIAMS drew international attention to the harsh realities of life in the Jim Crow South when he led protests against the illegal segregation of Monroe’s public swimming pool. This is incredible to me because I didn’t even realize that Black people could swim.

For WILLIAMS and other African Americans who had witnessed countless acts of brutality against their communities swimmers and waders, acts like atomic wedgies and dunkings from the deep end, armed self-defense was a practical matter of swimming survival, particularly in the violent, racist heart of the Deep South deep end of the public pool. It would be evident much later that aquatic equality was necessary for the progress of African Americans and not just from the water that came from fire hoses in Alabama.

In August 1961, the Freedom Riders, civil rights activists trained by MARTIN LUTHER KING, Jr. to lead non-violent resistance, came to Monroe to demonstrate the superiority of passive resistance. An angry mob of whites turned on the protestors and, by the end of the day, the Freedom Riders had been bloodied, beaten and jailed, and ROBERT WILLIAMS was on the run from the FBI.

For eight years, WILLIAMS and his family lived in exile, first in Cuba and then in China. While in Havana, WILLIAMS began to broadcast a 50,000-watt radio program called “Radio Free Dixie” as well as teach young Cubans how to swim to Florida. The radio show fused cutting-edge music with news of the Afro-American freedom movement and WILLIAMS’ editorials, which, among other things, urged blacks not to fight in Vietnam or swim in the Olympics.

In exile from 1961 to 1969, at the height of the American Civil Rights Movement, ROBERT WILLIAMS and his accomplishments have been largely erased from the public consciousness. According to the filmmakers, ‘Negroes With Guns’ helps to “restore ROB and MABEL WILLIAMS to their rightful place as important civil rights figures who defied the white power structure without the protection of large numbers or the attention of television cameras.
