Magic & Bird: Love & Basketba[ll]…

Shouts to my dude A.King from PNC Radio who put me on to this documentary screening at my local watering hole. SODA Bar on Vanderbilt Avenue was hosting the screening. HBO pictures produced this tight little doc about the relationship that two of basketball’s supreme competitors now share together. Magic & Bird is all about the obstacles that these two men had between them when they were pretty much mirror images in their love for the game of basketball and how hard they were willing to work to become winners.

What made the film so compelling is that you got to see a side of Larry Bird that made me wonder why I h8’d dude so much (other than the fact that he was a Celtic). Larry Bird grew up wild poor. Hardbody poor. Magic’s family wasn’t wealthy by any stretch of the imagination, but Magic’s dad didn’t end up merc’king himself like Bird’s dad did. Larry Bird was obsessed with Magic [ll]. With his stats and his achievements. Bird used Magic to propel himself faster and harder [ll]. Magic only wanted a hug from Bird. This shit was more than a bromance, these two wanted to mouf kiss each other.

At one point in the film while Magic was being interviewed he broke down into tears recalling the moment that Larry Bird called him up to ask how he was doing after Magic had publicly disclosed that he was HIV+. For Larry Bird, he secretly viewed Magic as one of his siblings that he constantly fought with but cherished dearly. This fuxing documentary almost made me get a piece of dust in my eye like that gotdamn Antwon Fisher bullshit. I pounded on my chest tho’ and the dust went away. Still and all, this was an incredibly revealing film for these larger than life NBA characters.

The Association needed Magic and Bird and the level of competition that they brought to the league. Magic and Bird needed one another for the challenge of competing and then later on the camaraderie. If you are a fan of the Association then you need this documentary to show you how these two players combined to save professional basketball. Bryant Gumbel’s commentary in this film was heeelarious. The filmmaker’s research and the archival footage used was vainglorious. From the Sopranos, to The Wire, up to Curb Your Enthusiasm, Home Box Office stays winning. Make sure you DVR this movie so you can watch it on repeat.

DirtyJerz is one of the commentors on this page that always puts his money where his mouf is [ll]. I can extra appreciate that since fam-a-lam isn’t even working right now. Everytime he sends me a package [ll] he str8 laces me. So when the homey puts in a request for some remixes we have the staff over here at DP.com get right to it. The staff of course being me.

DirtyJerz, it’s ya’ berfday. And you know we don’t give a fux…

The Boot Camp Clique Chronicles…

I dug into the archives for a pair of high boots that were relatively light weight. The mountaineering boots can stop a blizzard, but when you need to keep it moving and hitting up several spots they will give you the lead foot.

The choice was simple. The 6″ field boot is perfect for navigating snow drifts and still light and flexible enough not to make your feet feel tired from walking. These boots really came in handy this weekend as the ICs walked the expansive perimeter of the Atlantic Yards development site.

The waterproof status of the field boot is unquestionable. The best part of the field boot is its wide and thick sole which grips the ground with surety and stability. The flexibility of the field boots allows you to be super active while wearing them.

Peep the D-ring lacing system. This helps the quick tie-up and release.

The look of this pair is dope. The contrast stitching really sets off the all black leather and mesh upper. No wonder I found another pair of these same exact boots deadstocked in my archive. I must have copped these on some super sale. I have a new habit of keeping a receipt in my shoeboxes so I can remind myself of how much I paid retail for an item.

The little Timberland button on the ankle used to say ‘Gore-Tex’ on the OG field boots. I imagine that Timberland got tired of paying the Gore family for their proprietary fabric so they are now producing their own insulating materials.

I’ve hopefully found someone from the corporate side of Tim who knows their products even better than I do. I’ll let y’all know what comes of the convo.

Peace 2 Ernie Paniccioli…

Ernie P is a big fan of DP.com and one of the most understated historians of my lifetime. Is it because he has faithfully documented Hip-Hop history, as opposed to rock music or jazz? Is it because he has lived a life of talking truth to power? Is it because Ernie can be a surly curmudgeon when he senses a lack of sincerity in others?

The answer is all of the above.

I’m lucky ro call Ernie my friend even tho’ he will spit flames in my comments section over my sneaker collection or my appreciation of the 808s & Heartbreak album. Notwithstanding, Ernie Paniccioli has dedicated a lifetime to documenting the American experience for all peoples of color no matter their level of celebrity or notoriety.

I say all of this because I would like you to consider Ernie’s art if you have a few coins available to you. Ernie has several photobooks self-published on Lulu.com and I promise you they are the best history lesson you can receive on Hip-Hop.

Honda Knows How To AC’ Right…

The auto show will be here in NYC in a few weeks and I am already lining up the obamas I’m going to fall thru. Nothing goes better with a car than copious amounts of alcohol. I don’t support driving drunk tho’. It’s better to pull over so that you don’t spill your shit.

The best party so far looks to be the unveiling of the Acura concept crossover, the ZDX. This car is the blending of sports coupe speed, sedan interior space and the roadmanship of an SUV. Plus its an Acura and their track record is nearly flawless. I remember when they first dropped the MDX.

acuray

The MDX was the answer to the BMW X5 and the Lexus RX series. It’s a mid-size SUV with decent power (V6-V8) and superior handling. The MDX was my dream whip for several years. From driving Acuras previously I knew the dynamic nature of Honda engineering.

Acura pushed the performance level upwards with the production of the RDX. This whip is smaller than the MDX but it handles way better and looks a bit sportier. The RDX designers definitely took some cues from Subaru because the RDX reminds me of the Dakar rally cars that Subaru has made popular.

acuray

The ZDX is the most aggressive looking Acura concept SUV to date. This car looks like its built for getting triple digits on the Interstate. The idea is to give the SUV the pleasures of a roadster. The typical height of the sport utility vehicle is lowered a bit, but the stance still puts you above the road and above a sedan or coupe.

The speed bubble profile of the Acura ZDX reminds me of my new favorite dream whip, the BMW X6. Look at the interior and tell me if that doesn’t look like a sports coupe cockpit [ll]? The ZDX is definitely going to be a cockpit for some lucky ladies. With a ticket price of 45 stacks I’m sure that whoever cops this whip will have a ThunderDome allowance. Acura stays winning because Honda will… Not… Lose.
