For any NYC teen growing up in the center city during the 1980’s your lasting image of the Black superman would be LARRY DAVIS (R.I.P.). No one else has survived a shootout and subsequent manhunt the way that LARRY had.
This is how the story goes…
He was a smalltime narco bagman for some Bronx cops when he decided that he was going to keep the money he was handling along with the drugs. The police came looking for him to take him down hard. They expected him to shoot back. They didn’t expect him to escape alive.
NYC (The Bronx and Harlem) was turned on its ear as every two-bit pusher, pimp and hustler was throttled by the police as they searched for DAVIS who was able to elude the beast for over two weeks. When they finally corralled LARRY and brought him out in cuffs before the media I was amazed that he wasn’t this 7ft tall hulk.
He was just a brother in a V-goose with a part in his dark ceasar and a pair of Air Jordans on his feet. I knew a thousand kids in the city who could have been LARRY DAVIS. As a matter of fact I did KNOW them. On Sunday I will go to Reed Annex for a FREE pop-shop party celebrating the re-issue of the classic V-goose jacket.
I’ll be repping for the realest brother to ever rock one.
The Blackbook Diaries…

I can remember my mother being pissed off with me because I had sold some of my blackbooks. At the time I know I didn’t value the energy I had put into those books. I would take pictures of the burners I saw subways and walls and then copy that style using my tag name. I used the pictures for references on lettering and coloration as well.
When SACHA JENKINS isn’t creating stage plays and television shows and TWittering (@tedbawno?) he is curating books on graffiti masterpieces with the big homey Chino BYI. Their first masterpiece diary is titled ‘Piecebook‘ and it is a collection of artwork from some legendary graf writers. The piecebook or blackbook is where you store your ideas and you perfect your style.
The blackbook is a diary in the sense that it describes your progression as a graf artist from toy to b-boy, but the blackbook also holds some designs from your closest associates and the other writers that you respect for the all-world style or their all-city status. Piecebooks were supposed to be passed down from artists to one another because everyone did shit for the love of the art back then. I sold mine because of all the photos I had inside of them.
SACHA and Chino have a companion to the OG Piecebook called ‘Piecebook Reloaded‘. I’m gonna go on Amazon and cop these joints so I can reminisce and enjoy the artwork. I may even get off my ass and go to AlphaBeta and pick up a few cans. On second thought, I don’t need to get arrested again for a long time so maybe I wil just go to Pearl Paint and pickup a blackbook and some Design markers.

The homey PETE from Premium Laces hit me up on the TWitter and asked me would I call these new Nike Dunk Premiums for ladies.
I told PETE that they would naturally be called the ‘Dazzler’ Dunk Hi, appropriately named after the X-Men team member whose mutant ability is to convert sound vibrations into light and energy beams.
For crying out loud what more proof do you need than the fact that she even wore them on the cover of the issue in which she debuted?!?

DP.COM MANNY WATCH…

MANNY and the Dodgers are back into the NLCS round of the MLB playoffs. I hope they face off against Philly again so they can come up on a little getback.
The really great news for the Dodgers is that MANNY seems to have recovered his stroke [ll] after stumbling into the postseason going 5 for his last 31 at-bats. As goes MANNY so go the Dodgers despite ANDRE ETHIER having a breakout season.
The Yanks are on the verge of sweeping the Twins away in the ALDS and the Red Sox find themselves one game away from elimination also. If the current trends hold sway we may have ourself another NY-LA October Classic. The first one since the Dodgers series win in 1981.
