A panel from J. NICHOLAS’ Detective Boogaloo comic

JAMAR NICHOLAS is a friend of this website. He has been self-publishing his art and comicbooks for nearly 10 years. J reached out to me and told me that he was going to make some of his original artwork available for purchase. A closed mouth never gets fed and the romantic myth of a starving artist isn’t what’s up. Though J is far from starving.

Here’s a chance for you to come up on some OG panels from the Detective Boogaloo series as well as something commissioned if you have the time to let him grind. Give him a holler at jamar [dot] nicholas [at] gmail [dot] com. Detective Boogaloo is a mixture of graphic art styles and wit. It reminds me of Bugs Bunny and the Looney Tunes cartoons that I love because of all the double entendres that exist in the artwork and writing.

While we are on the subject of comicbooks, here’s a preview of the Ghostface Killah graphic novel titled ‘Cell Block Z‘ about to be released.

Put That On My Maybach…

ross

Was there ever any genre of music more aspirational than rap music? Not even gospel music wants to live as much as commercial rap does. I don’t think they make enough Maybach cars for all of these rappers to drive. It’s not like we would enjoy rap music about being broke motherfuckers either. That’s the reality I’m all too familiar with.

But with all the trappings that money can afford that still doesn’t make you any more of a man or a citizen in this country. A Harvard professor was terrorized and abducted by police from inside of his home. This was a blatant act of state sponsored terrorism. I’m no fan of that professor but I wonder when the feds come calling to the Maybach rappers if they will start rapping about the realest shit ever.

We all want to be rich and wealthy, but mostly secure. The idea that money and education can buy you security is forever shattered by the arrest of the professor. Why else would someone go to college? Why else do we work our asses off? If we can’t go into our own home and close the door then what was the point of all of this shit? If its just to earn more money to spend more money then I need to know that now.

We heard so much talk that America was now post-racial because the president was Black. We even heard songs that exalted in this fact. I still haven’t heard the song that says we are at our core a racist nation of cowards. Everyone hides behind their guns and their authority. Manhood has become effeminate because men are scared of one another. We are like hyenas and jackals with badges and guns.

Rick Ro$$ was once one of those people with the authority to terrorize with impunity. Now he just works as the cheerleader for the prison industrial complex. More than 1 million African American males are locked up behind bars. The crimes committed are a direct reflection of the poverty that we have promoted across this country. Would Ro$$ be the first rapper to put his interests behind those of the 1 million? That would be the realest shit he ever wrote.

batman beyond

It’s that part of the DP.Com show where we mail away some free shit.

I was outside of a jobsite in downtown Brooklyn and this old man was selling dollar books for kids. Mostly coloring books and the what not. My eyes came across the cover above featuring the Batman Beyond character. I bought all the books he had on the table (8). They are perfect Random House readers for your kids 6-8 yrs old.

If you are unfamiliar with the Batman Beyond story it was fashioned as the evolution of the Batman character that might have followed The Dark Knight Returns storyline. Batman is inactive and elderly, but he still maintains the cave because he knows that someone will arrive to replace him as Gotham’s caped crusader. It ends up being a kid in high school.

I have enjoyed the Batmen Beyond cartoons for their stylish verve. The stories weren’t half bad either. Copp the DVD’s if you see them on sale in Wal-Mart or wherever. getting back to the matter at hand. If you have kids between the ages of 6-8 (I see you 1969, Combat Jack) then hit the thread so I can mail you a copy of this comic. DP.Com is for the kids!

roots jam

I was mad that I was missing the Roots performance during the Rock the Bells concert even though in my mind I knew I would still break my neck to see them do their weekly set at the Highline Ballroom. That stage at the Highline belongs to them. Once you see them get down there you know they own the stage.

Sometimes it comes to you in a ridiculous Questlove drum solo where he nearly beats a hole into the drum kit.

Sometimes its Black Thought rhyming a mile-a-minute while slicing and dicing the beat like a surgeon with a laser-guided scalpel.

I’ve been there when James Poyser goes the fuck off and takes us all to church from the keyboard pulpit.

Captain Kirk does his virtuoso bid with the axe and the bassist O-Ski ain’t nothing to fux with either.

But mostly the Roots Jam Session has been an assembly of some of the greatest musicians known to man who enjoy making other people shine their brightest. I would not appreciate Amanda Diva and all of her efforts if not for the Roots. The Roots finally brought the ladies back into the rap music equation. No one before them has even tried to do that on a real level.

There are no gimmicks afoot when the Roots play on the Highline stage.

There’s only good music.

j period

When J.Period said that he would spin at the 1st Annual Bring Your Own Blogger BBQ is the moment that I could hear the space shuttle taking off. J.Period is one of the subjects for the DP.com ‘Fanboyz Unite!’ webisodes.

*P.S. I feel like a Dewshy McDeucester everytime I say “webisode”.

J.Period just happens to be one of the deejays that fux with the Roots as much as I do. If you haven’t downloaded his special free mixtapes for the BYOB BBQ please do so. Or quietly kill yourself in scalding hot water in your shower.

J.Period can go from creating the definitive volume of LAURYN HILL music to scoring official major motion picture film trailers like Street Kings and American Gangster and then video games like Tony Hawk’s Motion and DJ Hero. J.Period is a gamer fanboy supreme which we will see in his ‘Fanboyz Unite!’ video.

J is also one of the deejays active in breaking new music across the Hip-Hop genre. Tune in to J.Period’s Truelements Radio channel sponsored by Toyota Scion. Speaking of hybrids… J.Period’s mixtape of hybrid rock-rap group Game Rebellion called ‘Searching For Rick Rubin’ was tha’ sheet.

The Bring Your Own Blogger BBQ is proud to have J.Period as one of our deejays. Bring your own beatmaker out this Saturday and chill with us.
