I made the run around NYC on my solo dolo steez this weekend. There was too much ish going down in every boro. Shout out to everyone who invited me to their cookout. I ended up at my homey P-City’s crib because he has the super HD flatscreen and the roofdeck overlooking the new Brooklyn skyline. Your boy handled the grill. Lamb chops, zucchini and whole corn on the cob.

Back to the SFU NYC tour.

This month’s hunting had some pretty slim pickings. I returned to my favorite store of the season right now, Dr.Jay’s on Fordham Road, to see what they were offering on their clearance table.

I ended up copping another pair of the NIKE G.I. Joe Air Assaults to put up on eBay since they are $20 now.

I also picked up their final pair of Air Tech Challenges in black, orange and neon. I don’t expect to make any big money off these on the eBay system but for someone who needs a pair of crispy kicks for under $40 (including shipping to wherever) they will be winning.

The sale racks weren’t holding anything too crazy for too cheap, but I did encounter these shoes that were priced to move.

This shoe is the NIKE Dunk Free Trainer Low. This is part of NIKE’s growing catalog of hybrid sneakers. The design team in Oregon fuses some of the most popular design elements of classic shoes into one new sneaker. These joints combine the NIKE Dunk with the features from the Air Trainer 1 and the sole platform of the NIKE Free5.0 cross-trainer. I’m sick that these are $30 because I happily paid $60 for mine back in January. Original MSRP was $100.

The Superstar from adidas in all black was intriguing to me since I haven’t copped a pair from the three stripe brand in some time. The $40 price tag is what held me back. If these were $30 i would have gone in.

Talk about being sick to my stomach…

I copped these high top hybrids over the holidays during a visit to the ‘A’. They have a store called Wish that all the cool kids shop at. If you live in the ‘A’ or are just visiting like I was do yourself a favor and avoid buying product from this store. They are wildly over priced and their service is far from reputable. I paid $160 for these kicks. I could have bought three(3) pairs from Dr.Jay’s and still had $10 left over for a fitted cap. Wish will never see another dollar from my hand ever again.

*The date for the June SFU NYC tour hasn’t been set yet so stay tuned and we will see what is good in the lifestyle around late June.

3 card monty

Are easily separated.

These old school hustlers brought out the 3 Card Monty setup and got this dude for his grip. This is a variation on the ‘shell game’ where a pebble is hidden under a shell and the confidence man managing the game moves the pebble around discreetly so that you never correctly guess the shell it is under.

I felt bad for the dude in his young twenties that was swindled down by this professional unit. These people were pretty sharp as far as street hustlers are concerned. The two dudes in the picture were the lead bigmouths. Their accomplices were spreadd throughout the onlookers.

This was almost like watching a video of hyenas take down their prey with guile as they caused confusion with commotion.

Homeboy never even stood a chance.

The i.C.’s: CHECK MATE

iCs

How is it that everything has to revolve around me? I have some major issues.

Last year on my bornday the iNternets Celebrities brain trust (RAFI, CAS and I) were having an e-mail convo and CAS broached the idea of shooting a movie about check cashing spots after Rafi spotted a comment at Oh Word suggesting that. As usual we all agree that we will do it, but the truth is that our daily schedules don’t easily facilitate our filmmaking desires. As I re-read that thread I kind of laugh to myself because the movie we ended up creating is expressed in that e-mail.

Check cashing locations are necessary evils in poor neighborhoods. They provide the services that banks are unwilling and incapable of generating. The check cashing locations keep poor people on the economic grid.

RAFI and I are somewhat idiot savants in that even though we are both writers we have a hard time delivering outlines and scripts to CASIMIR for discussion. We generally like to meet up beforehand and figure out our locations then just go in and start shooting and let the discovery of the moment guide us. That’s easy work for RAFI and I. For CAS, not so much. He has hours of tape stock to upload and review. I don’t envy his workload.

The following film you are about to go in on is from several days of shooting. CAS and I did a scout reel first as we rolled around Bushwick, Brooklyn. We brought in IAN SAVAGE for the the first day of hard shooting in and around Bushwick. IAN rolled with us up in Utah at the Sundance Film Festival. The third day of filming we indoctrinated JOSH WEISBROT to the i.C. collective as we drove around Downtown Brooklyn. Many hours of film footage went into this short video.

Chea goes out to BEN POPKEN from Consumerist dot com, CLAY RAIDER gave us some real talk. He is a dude we chopped it up with outside of the Taj Mahal of check cashing spots. Shout to VeE from Scritch and Scratch for supplying some sketches for the visuals. ELI KETER does the music and you really need to show him some respect when the horns blow in. ‘Bodega’ has been a wildly successful film for us and we recently won the judges honorable mention at the Paul Robeson Film Festival at the Newark Museum (come out and check us at the screenings in July). ‘Checkmate’ is even better. Word to Ol’ Dirty Bastard.

“Cash rules everything around me. C.R.E.A.M. get the money, dollar dollar bill y’all!”

*cues up Digital Underground ‘I Get Around’…

Uhhhhh, who is that calling me? What time is it? 4pm. Damn, I hate when I lose a whole day to the drunken sleep. I should have seen this coming too. Three straight nights of Obamas featuring Courvosier will do that to you. I overdosed on the brown juice from Thursday up until Saturday night. I don’t feel sick, but I cant see clearly either. Thank goodness its raining and overcast here in New York. Thats about how shit must look in my brain right now.

I’m trying to sort out all the information that filtered through my head these last three days. There was a lot of politicking that I put in on behalf of DP dot and the iNternets Celebrities. I hope these connects pan out over the summer. I might look like I am partying my ass off, but please believe I am working too. Don’t be mislead into thinking that I consumed a dozen rounds of fruit flavored cognac mixes just to become inebriated. We will have some great features here at DP because of my lush life.

I finally met up with Hip-Hop gossip personality Miss Info. She has been a fan of my girl Fresh at Crunk & D for sometime now. She is also a big fan of RAFI KAM. I would be jealous too if my lady weren’t so fine and smart.

I will be modeling Mighty Healthy a lot this summer. Thanks to 40 and RAY.

The big news though is that the Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival will be bigger and better than last years’ production. More movie nights, more concert dates and more great Hip-Hop.

Who will be in NYC this weekend? Let’s get a roll call so we can plan the first monthly Sneaker Fiends Unite! NYC tour. If we are lucky we might have an Obama to fall through afterwards.
